Subject: Too much spam button use??

I am generally only online at night, for about six hours a night depending on how busy work is. One of the first things I do is look through the forums from the point where I got offline the night before to where they currently are. One of the things that I noticed is that I seem to be hitting the spam button quite a bit, and I was wondering if there is such a thing as using it too much? I don't go out looking for spam, it just seems like there is a lot of it there, so I report it. If I had to guess I would say that I hit the spam button around thirty to sixty times a night, sometimes more depending on how long I spend in the Halo 3 forum. I don't know if it is because I have the time to go through and read most of the threads made when I was offline or what. Every time I hit the button, the post or thread in question is spam, a ''bad'' topic, or should be moved somewhere else. I was just wondering if there is such a thing as using the spam button too much?

All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

You can't really use it "too much" as long as you use it properly.

You should use it for anything that breaks the rules. Even replies. Same thing goes for the anything violating the Code of Conduct and Terms of Use.

What He Said.... Only use it if Somebody is going agaist the rules of the forum... Or if the post is in the wrong forum... For example - (Subject) Your Favourite dish, in the halo 3 forum

Personally, I don't think there is; as long as you don't abuse the power. Like yourself, I'll report anything and everything that is against any rule. Even if it is something as simple as a bump. A rule is a rule; but I too find myself questioning my actions. DR WE1RD, I would only suggest to you to keep doing what you're doing.

It's hard to put such fears to rest without revealing too much about how moderators view the result of those reports.

Basically, the best idea is to report every thread you see - [edit] which violates the rules of course. That means we can find urgent troublemakers at the touch of a button. There is a difference between overusing the report system and misusing the report system. Just avoid the latter and you need not worry.

My Grifball user page.
So if you really want to get to know me, you're welcome to add me anywhere.

I honestly don't think I've ever used the button.

I try to stay out of problematic forums, but when I do enter, I stay away from poor threads, so I'm never there to hit the button anyway..

Hmm. I'm almost afraid to use it.

It just sits there.. menacingly. I'm afraid to touch it.

..

And you're SURE it won't bite me?

good because 1 day last week I used it at least 150 times in a day. It was like national spam day or something.

Touch it, you know you want to =). At least you never had an 'Open all links' button back when there wasn't a 'Are you sure you want to ban __________' message. Recon and his shiny button. <3

I'm browsing the Forums a lot. I click the button so much, I don't keep count. Part of me thinks that I am spamming the system with flags for spam and violations but at the same time, maybe I'm not doing it enough. I do report obvious posts from threads, and sometimes some of the supporting posts but really I should be reporting every post of violation, and sometimes there is just so much spam that it seems impractical to do so (although I've done that too). Ash has given us a good guideline. Don't worry about how much you do it, just worry about whether or not there really is a violation.

I see a lot of it. I know what I'm looking at (as I am sure you are, OP) when I see a violation or spam. Now, the Mod Club might disagree and leave it open, that's fine. But if I were asked why I reported that, I'd know exactly why. So, I wouldn't worry about it as long as you put some thought into what you are reporting.

Same here. I can back-up 100% of my reports. Just send me a pm for explanations anytime.

If you see a 100% spam thread, just report the first page of ppl and that should get the point across pretty fast.

Also not everyone has the exact same view of spam or the rules.

I'm certifiable.

Truly, don't worry about overusing the "report spam" button. I can't go into details, but the system can easily tell the difference between honest use and abuse. If you think a post breaks the forum rules, feel free to hit that button.

-- Steve regrets that the reason folks hit the "spam" button so much is because there's so much spam around. Still, things look to be getting a bit better over time... unless that's misplaced optimism.

Well Steve, last week is unofficially 1 of the worst for spam in Bnet history as far as I'm concerned. 1 point we had no mods on for 8 hours and wow did ppl just go nuts with spam.

I gotta say I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that uses it on a regular basis. Most of the time it is just pointless spam, cross posts, double posts/bumping, or something posted in the wrong forum that needs to be moved. If it is something really bad I still prefer to send a PM to a mod. Every time I hit the button I am ready to say why I did it, just in case some day I do get in trouble for using it, but I don't see that happening. Thank you to those who took the time to reply, you can let this die, or discuss it further if you wish, I got the info I was looking for.

I have no idea how the system actually works, but is there anything in the works to expand the functionality. At least on the members end? I'd assume that just pressing the button would flag it however many times users flagged it. What about expanded data, like checking boxes for why the topic or post was flagged. While it may be another step, at least the mods could know why it was flagged at a glance. It would also serve to keep running records on problem individuals. Unless that's just a lot of extra for nothing, since the Shishka patented "I remember you, jerk. Stop it. [bant]" seemed to work pretty well back in the day.

Anyways My hand hurts sometimes from hitting that button so much.

Its like pop machine with quarters. Every time I hit it, I win. Or well you all get the point.

I don't care who you are, that's great; made me laugh. =P And if I didn't want to get rid of my Sig, I would so put that in there. Nice photoshop skills. I don't know what I would do if I had to remove the back round from that.

I also agree with Truth, once again. In that we should have a drop down menu of some sort with a selection of options that will allow us to give a reason for flagging the post.
