Hey all. I haven't been here too long (my first account was created around the end of '06), but I've noticed alot of different topics relating to things that have happened in Bungie's or the Community's history. Anywho, if anybody has some spare time, I was wondering if someone could clear up a few points. Thanks!

P.S. Sorry if any of these topics are taboo =/

* Why is Jeremiah "avius custos" instead of Forum Ninja or Master Forum Ninja? (also, is he called ninja on fire just because of his picture, or is there a story there too?)

* Who is this guy?

* What happened to VII Toast?

* Who/what are the Banhammer and the Disembodied Soul?

* Why is Bungie obsessed with Soffish?

* Who is Ling Ling?

* What were the Cortana Letters?

* What was Kitchen #8?

* What's behind the phrases "Eat the Path" and "Frogblast the Ventcore"?

* Who was Shishka?

I'll edit if I remember any others

Thanks for all the great answers =)

* Why is Jeremiah "avius custos" instead of Forum Ninja or Master Forum Ninja? (also, is he called ninja on fire just because of his picture, or is there a story there too?) He is Ninja On Fire because he is, literally a Ninja that is on Fire.

* Who is this guy? That dude works on the Website in some fashion or another. Obssessed with squids.

* What happened to VII Toast? Long story. Many different sides. Common Consensus says that he basically went crazy, then made a deal with Achronos to step down as a mod.

* Who/what are the Banhammer and the Disembodied Soul? The Banhammer is a program that bans idiots. The Disembodied Sould is just as it sounds. A guy who's Soul was put into the B.net Servers.

* Why is Bungie obsessed with Soffish? Because.

* Who is Ling Ling? We finding Ling Lings head!

* What were the Cortana Letters? An ARG for Halo 2.

* What was Kitchen #8? I don't know that one....

* What's behind the phrases "Eat the Path" and "Frogblast the Ventcore"? Ask an older member.

Proof there is a God.
My RT account page.
My Grifball user page.
So if you really want to get to know me, you're welcome to add me anywhere.

A lot of these memes and inside jokes have existed longer than time, and many of us don't know the full story.

Most of the time you just gotta go with it.

But for those other rare cases, the Bungiepedia is a great place for information.

* Why is Jeremiah "avius custos" instead of Forum Ninja or Master Forum Ninja? (also, is he called ninja on fire just because of his picture, or is there a story there too?)
My guess is that it's because he is the 'Matchmaking' guy that keeps an eye on what folks like and don't like. As for why we call him Ninja 0n Fire, that was his old name in late '05 possibly early '06; can't remember. Most just call him N0F for short.

* Who is this guy?
Bungie Employee.

* What happened to VII Toast?
His moderation status was revoked; or he left. I can't remember which one it was.

* Who/what are the Banhammer and the Disembodied Soul?
Ban Hammer- Name given by users to the power of being banned. Thus, a ban is the ban hammer.
Disembodied Soul- Emotional support. Bungie Employees used to be able to log onto the account, not sure if they still can. He is pretty much an 'AI' of the site. Sends you messages when a mod gives you a warning, bans an alternate account if a main account has been banned etc.

* Why is Bungie obsessed with Soffish?
'This soffish DO NOT EAT!'

* Who is Ling Ling?
Tis a dog. This should explain.

* What were the Cortana Letters?
A section/part of the Halo Alternate Reality Game.

* What was Kitchen #8?
Ah, Kitchen 8. Basically, it's none-sense. One day some guy went to the flood and told people to vote for a kitchen to get remodeled. The flood went crazy and pretty much Kitchen 8 won without any question. And to this day, Kitchen 8 is still considered the Floods Kitchen.

* What's behind the phrases "Eat the Path" and "Frogblast the Ventcore"?
Marathon. =)

I think it's because he was a Bungie employee but left; same for KP. He's called Ninja 0n Fire because that used to be his screenname, before he changed it.

* What happened to VII Toast?Long story. Basically (as I recall it), people were getting fed up with him and thinking that the modship had went to his head. He stepped down.

* What were the Cortana Letters?Halo: Combat Evolved (when it was for MAC I believe) ARG

* What's behind the phrases "Eat the Path" and "Frogblast the Ventcore"?From Marathon. These things called Bob's would yell this out. They didn't have a brain (I don't believe so...haven't played it in a LONG time)so that's the only thing they could say. It's not supposed to make sense.

The rest people already answered.

He was a fan of Bungie quiet a few years ago. Then, he began to work for Bungie; and with it began to Moderate the forums. He was a ruthless moderator for a few years then left Bungie and joined Certain Affinity just before Halo 3's release.

You missed the point like Vader missed the banshee, your whole argument is covered in bees.
Stop sending me group invites -blam!-s!

The history of Kitchen 8

Kitchen #8

On the 26th of January, 2007, LostSpartan 087 posted a thread on the Flood forum to ask the users to vote for kitchen #8 in a contest to choose "The ugliest kitchen", during the course of the day, the thread gained extreme activity including bungie.net employee "Frankie", several threads were posted to keep up to date with the contest, and even a Bungie.net group called Followers of Kitchen 8 was formed to "worship" the kitchen. During the peak hours of the thread, a user named "Darkness Howls" posted a message saying that he was going to email a joke message to the poll's site webmaster saying that the Flood users (Floodians) and their "master" Frankie had rigged the poll, and they all resided in New Orleans and told them to send the police to "exterminate" them. The letter was sent however, fearing that the webmaster may believe the letter, a second letter may have been sent confirming the letter as a joke.

The discovery of Kitchen #8 also lead to the founding of Kitchenism, a religion dedicated to Kitchen #8. The religion is very new, but already has a rich history including 8 special rules called "the 8 Kitchenmanments." The 8 kitchenmanments:

1. Thou shalt not taketh the holy name of kitchen number 8 in vain.

2. Thou shalt worship no other kitchens before kitchen number 8.

3. Thou shalt not commit adultery with your garbage disposal.

4. Remember kitchen number 8, and keep it holy.

5. Thou shalt not covet your neighbors kitchen.

6. Thou shalt not steal from your neighbor's kitchen.

7. Thou shalt not destroy kitchen number 8, any other kitchen is fine.

8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy kitchen

The main advertisement used on the site usually goes along the lines of "Those willing to join Kitchenism and aid Kitchen #8 on it's glorious path to cookware salvation and smite the evil kitchen #7 must also be prepared to undertake this oath: When we joined the contest we took an oath. On the blood of our forefathers, on the blood of our sons, we swore to uphold Kitchen #8. Those who would break this oath are heretics. Worthy of neither pity, nor mercy. They offend all who walk the path. We shall grind them into dust... and continue our march to glorious salvation!"

The oath in this Advertisement parodies a quote from Half Jaw (The only difference is Half Jaw said "We swore to uphold the Covenant")

The Book of Kitchen #8: In The Beginning, In the days of yore before the discovery and subsequent colonization of Closet # 12, Kitchen #8 sat in the dark of the Universe, and decided it was time for action. He first created the floor, a place for his followers to be and view his Awesomeness and worship him as he sat on his Golden Dinner Chair. But Kitchen 8 saw that his followers would need somewhere to keep their belongings, for even though Kitchen 8 was mighty, he was not one to take from those who had earned. It was then that Kitchen 8 created Cabinets for his followers, and he was pleased with his creation. Kitchen 8 then saw that his followers were becoming cold, because he had forgotten to pay the gas bill, 'cause, you know, being supreme Kitchen just doesn't quite pay the bills. So Kitchen 8 siphoned the gas line from his neighbor's house into himself, and constructed an Oven for his followers to have warmth while they basked in the Kitchen's Awesomeness.

The Kitchen saw that the vast number of followers were growing, and that more space was needed. So the Kitchen used his Amazing Powers and created The Hanging Cabinets of Eden, N.C. The followers rejoiced in this new storage space, and worshipped him even more.

Trouble Arrises in the East

It was at the creation of the Hanging Cabinets of Eden, N.C., that the far-off followers of Kitchen 8 became angered that their prayers had not been answered. It was there that some of Kitchen 8's followers began to worship closer, but lesser Kitchen's, such as Kitchen 7, the satanic, and Kitchen 10, the lowly. They began using their combined strength to harm Kitchen 8 and his followers, using vile tactics such as leaving the Cabinets open, and making water pipes bust. In his weakened state, Kitchen 8 called upon his closest follower, LostSpartan 087, to become a prophet for his followers. LostSpartan called for the assistance of the loyal followers of Kitchen 8 to fight back against the vile compatriots of Kitchen's 7 and 10. And So It Began...

GE-had

The epic battle between Kitchen 8 and Kitchen's 7 and 10 still rages to this day, but with Kitchen 8 leading his followers into the divine makeover. Many believers think that win this war is over, Kitchen 8 shall take his followers to the new Kitchen, where they will bask in the glory of multiple sinks ans stoves.

* Why is Jeremiah "avius custos" instead of Forum Ninja or Master Forum Ninja? (also, is he called ninja on fire just because of his picture, or is there a story there too?)

Unlike shishka and stosh - the other two ninja (ex-)employees, Jeremiah was never a ninja before being hired. He used to be the dedicated playlist dude for halo 2 (a job he -blam!- rocked at, btw). While employed, he used the nickname "Ninja 0n Fire", and when his contract finished, he switched to "Jeremiah", which is how he's known to the rest of the community. He isn't a ninja, so doesn't get the ninja title, but he's too cool to lose his avatar, so gets a "Custom avatar" title instead.

* Who is this guy?
Another employee.

* What happened to VII Toast?
Alot of things. Long story short - he was a bit of a -blam!- so lost his powers.

* Who/what are the Banhammer and the Disembodied Soul?
The banhammer is bungie's suite of automated banning tools. It monitors stats and games and automatically bans cheaters from matchmaking (NOT xbl). Disembodied soul is the banhammer for b.net. He enforces permanent bans (if you use an alt account while permabanned, he'll ban the alt), and he is the one who sends PMs informing of warnings and the like. The soul was said to belong to the now-deceased pirate responsible for leaking marathon's source code. He was placed in the soul extraction machine and now roams bungie.net's servers for all eternity. You can chat to him here

* Why is Bungie obsessed with Soffish?
Soffish is Missing! If finding please return to Bungie Studios. Do not eat!

* Who is Ling Ling?
You finding ling ling's head?...

* What were the Cortana Letters?
Epic, EPIC storyline viral pre-halo. A proper sign of ye olde bungie. Full story of them is here.

* What was Kitchen #8?
-blam!- flood meme. they rigged a vote and got called hackers.

* What's behind the phrases "Eat the Path" and "Frogblast the Ventcore"?
Marathon.

* Who was Shishka?
Shishka was a pegboy.

heh. No. He was the master moderator of DOOM. Think evilcam, cubed. That was shishka on a good day.

edited to add the disembodies soul background

elmicker, you just reminded me of so many good memories it's not even funny. I still can't believe how long that went on for...

To those that don't know, a guy in a flood posted about five full pages of 'Shishka is a pegboy'. If I'm not mistaken, it was during one of the many forum wars (Don't ask.)

2. A producer at Bungie.
3. He resigned.
4. The banhammer is the program that scans Halo 2 and Halo 3 games for signs of cheating and bans the offenders. The Soul is the entity trapped in the bungie.net web servers who current spends his time banning people's alt accounts who try and get around bans, and relaying moderator warnings.
5. Do not eat.

7. A set of letters that pre-date Halo hinting at its plot. Not canon (not official parts of the story).
8. Certainly not number 9.
9. Frog blast the ventcore.
10. Shishka was the 2nd moderator for bungie.net, who has since moved on to work at Certain Affinity, a company started by a former Bungie staffer. He was nice compared to me in dealing with rule violations.

Somewhere in the flood, I know that much. At this point, probably around the page three thousand. Plus a few hundred or a thousand most likely.
