if knowledge is power and power corrupts, isn't knowledge therefore dangerous?

Ok, I have no idea how D&D works, so could someone summarize what's happening?
At first glance, I thought MC had a dunce hat on. And why a Jackal, they're always scheming (not plotting).
i would give you a link to a wiki arcticle, or to wizards.com, but i'm too lazy.
ever play WoW or NwN? those are basically based off it. with graphics
ok, your charecter is all the stuff you have on paper. you choose a class, which is what your guy does. if i were a bard(most hated class), then my guy would sing and make allies near me better. if i were a fighter/meatbag, i'd do the heavy hitting and take the most damage. there's a bunch of classes. whenever you do something remotly important, you roll a die, depending on the situation. mainly you roll d20's. and if you attack something and get a 1, you might hit yourself, and a 20 is an instant hit, with chance of instant death. there are also feats, which improve your guy in different ways, provided you have the prerequisites for it. there are items, of course, which'll do whatever(firebomb=alchemist's fire). you can choose different races, like me, though some are over powered and forced to be lower levels.
i think that's enough to give you a little insight on what it's like.
rest in peace gary gygax
edit: in the picture, MC is the DM/Dungeon Master/god, the rest are the players. i dunno what super is doing, he's in the class slot though...
