It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

You made the one that's just the rank, and tilted it, like mine. I'm talking about making a full line of avatars of ranks, that are tilted, off to the side a bit, and maybe with a patterne in the back with a slight gradient.

Why? By doing all that you are only increasing the file size. Bnet has like a 10 kb avatar limit and if you compress it, the picture will come out horrible.

I could make a full line of them in a couple of minutes with gradients and all that but it would seem pointless to me.

Pfft, not like this rank avatar idea would become a reality anyway.

How come no one has thought "hmm, maybe the background colour for the avatar should be the background colour of the post body so it blends in well"?

Is it really not that obvious?!
-TGP-
Making it a transparent Gif would be better so if Bungie changes the layout colour it won't affect the avatars like when the new new hawtness came in it had blue squares as backgrounds.

I like the gametype emblems better than the rank ones, also medals that we have unlocked should be able to be used as an avatar.

Not saying there's anything wrong with this idea. My point is how often does Bungie.net pick up on an idea a forum member has?

Not very often. I do agree with you about 'Making a new rank'. Bungie already has them, why not add effects to them? Who knows, maybe Bungie might end up using them on their site. I thought mine turned out better than some of theirs. You guys agree?

We already have Halo 3 model, Halo 3 emblem, Halo 2 emblem, and the whole set of other avatars. I don't think we need more.

  • 02.02.2008 11:30 PM PDT

The real benefit to the Halo 2 Emblem, Halo 3 Emblem, and Halo 3 Character Avatars is that they are somewhat unique and individualized.

There isn't too much individuality as far as military insignia is concerned.

I like the idea of the "Show My Rank" as an avatar. I just don't like the lens glare.

The photoshop filter fails it for me.

Amen and Amen... Lens Flair to a picture involves absolutely no degree of skill.
I agree with stosh, it seems unoriginal.

Please, please, stop with the Photoshop Filters... they can work well if applied correctly but slapping a Lense Flare on top of an image just.... no.

Anyway, wouldn't "use my Halo 3 Rank" as an Avatar kind of promote elitism? Well it could.

I think the simpler avatars are better in this instance, because the more you stylize, the more people won't like your style. There's not much to hate with simple avatars, besides their simplicity.

That said, is this better?

I'd make one for the master general and below, but I'm too lazy to mock up an embroidered background.

Frankly, I think the simple one would be best. The Halo 3 player model is simple. There's no explosions or anything. And it works.

Like Bungie is Boss said, there isn't much individuality when it comes to a fictional rank avatar. Emblems have near countless combinations, and so do player models. But with ranks, there are only 42 images, 1 for each rank.

So unless a very limited number of outcomes there are to this avatar isn't a problem, 'spicing' it up would be the only way to add more individuality. That is better, by the way.

Im more a fan of the steel background in comparison to the reddish background. That being said the only way people are taking my halo2 smiley face away from me will be through much violence.

That's 1260 avatar combinations. Not as many as the Halo 3 player model, of course, but that's made differently.

It would be nice, but there are more pressing matters at the moment, and I don't see it coming in any time soon.

That's pretty much a given.

There are plenty of things and features I'd like to see first before a new avatar option is introduced.
