I know we will never be able to see other's post counts, but don't you think it'd be nice to know how many posts you have?

I love statistics in all shapes and forms, the heat-maps... <3

The reason post counts were removed is because people would say things such as "I have more posts than you, therefore I am better". If you could only see your own post count, then that wouldn't happen.

Thread title= What is your post count?

That makes even being able to see just your own post count an invitation for elitism and spamming.

It would. But will never happen. If you happen to look at all posts by a member, I believe if they have over 40 pages, they have over 1000 posts.

Um, people would say that anyway. You'd have threads devoted solely to comparing people's post counts. Then people would spam to inflate that count, and post again claiming to be the number one poster on Bungie.net and beg for Recon and/or demand to be a mod. It'd cause a lot of problems, so no way in hell will it happen.

In all honesty, if a user could go to their Profile and see a little overview.

Overview
You have created x Topics
You have created x Replies

...and a Member could ONLY see their own statistics, then it really wouldn't be a problem.

Anyhow I just used the "find all posts by this user" thing and worked out my total posts that way.

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

I'm not sure how many posts I have...

I actually think it is a good thing too. If people knew their post counts, members would be constantly spamming with short one-worders and other crap like that just to say they have this many posts or what not. I myself have been tempted to spam just to get my post count up on the OGame board. It is also very unorganized with pointless threads (hence the reason Bungie.net doesn't show post counts).

thats an understatement.

But I don't see how being able to only see your own Post counts would create a problem for these forums.

Post counts leads to elitism.
This has been discussed MANY times before.
Anytime anyone asks for it, they are told no.

EXACTLY. How could that possibly promote elitism? Be realistic now.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I am not worried about elitism because I don't really care if somebody thinks that they are great for an irrelevant reason.

But post counts create a clear spam problem. Regardless of whether you can see it or not. Unfortunately, I think that this idea is well-intentioned, and to be honest, I am frequently curious about my own post count. But I think that it's undeniable that having post counts available -- even privately -- would change the posting habits of many users. Rather than substantive posts, you'd start seeing one-liners everywhere, and some posters would become famous for posting stuff like "I agree" or "No." Posters would begin breaking up their posts rather than editing their original (e.g., new post -- "one more thing I forgot in my last post") and so on.

Not to mention the numerous threads -- even if they made a rule against it -- saying "what's your post count?" and "I just reached 20,000 posts!" and so on.

Again, I believe your idea is totally well-intentioned, but sadly, I just can't agree with it.

Indeed it does, it's funny how they left it there but removed it everywhere else. Ah well.

Actually, they weren't. The problem was people more or less spamming to get a higher post count just to have it (like one guy who wanted to be the first person to reach certain benchmarks on the new forum, and he was) or because they thought they would get an upgrade in title like other forums.

I personally would really like to know how much time I've wasted here, but adding the post count would probably cause too much confusion with the new titles. I think spam "How many posts do you have" threads are an overrated, I don't remember people making them before. But it's be a while.

At the very least, I would like the search to go past 999 results. Yes, it would be a make-shift post counter, but there are many other legitimate uses for it, and not having the number on your profile would not confuse people on titles and would deter useless posts about it.

That number is accurate for people with unique usernames who have under 1000 posts. Once you hit 999 posts, though, the "more posts by this user" feature maxes out and is no longer accurate.

To uncover the picture... The reality is that Bungie.net forums contain primarly Halo audience, the same audience that T-Bags, try to rap in the microphone, talk trash over the lamest things, and would in an instant eagerly jump into a conversation about "who has the biggest 'member'" conversation. What makes you think people won't make a deal about posts when you see a thread titled, "rate my signature" (and that's a thread that truely has existed, multiple times). Other forums have post counts, and they have a lot of cases of seniority complex, even though it's forums for something of a more mature audience.

Sure, having it hidden would keep people from directly going, "well you have less posts than I do, you don't know what you're talking about." However, instead you'll get "how many post counts do you have, because I bet I have more than you," this is where you get two people in a pissing match trying to get the other to say how many the other has first so they can make up a number to top the other person.

Yes, there would be a thread called "How many post counts do you have?" because it is hidden. Similarly, there have been threads "how many time have you been blacklisted?" "have you been blacklisted?" "the longest you've been banned?" "is so and so blacklisted?" and "why was so and so banned?" all things hidden from the form, the difference is, blacklisting is needed.

[ADDITON]
Hell, posts down from this one, there's a locked topic, "What Is Your Clan Called?" and that's something most often is visable to people...

Even if post counts were private, people would still find ways to show off their posting prowess to everyone.

This is the moral of the story. People are idiots, and they would do idiotic stuff like this. Sorry to be harsh but it's true.

I'll pass on post counts.

No one cares to know who has 1,000 posts or more, or even how many posts other members have made if it's in excess of that. People in general, I suspect, only care to know how many posts they've made.

Protip: If you have over 1,000 posts, use the date of the oldest post listed and use that to estimate your post frequency over a relatively large period of time. Multiply to match your join date, assuming an even temporal distribution. It satisfies your curiosity and doesn't create the spam problem.

There's no real need for a post counter unless you desperately want to immediately be able to judge yourself or another member based on that criterion. If you're interested enough to care, use the above method -- but that's self-defeating because you probably already have more respect for the poster than to need it confirmed by a number. If you're not interested, you have nothing where you can immediately say oh he only has x posts, that explains it.

If you're not in favor of post counts for the seniority/experience element, then you can still make tons of inane posts just the same so you can gather whatever rewards you feel may come from a high post count. I wouldn't recommend that, of course, because that attitude is commonly found right in the station to Bansville.
