The novels.... The movies are confusing to anyone who hasn't read the books, and to those who have read the books, the movies are utter disappointments (but they have their moments, and as movies (if you don't think of them as movies based on books), they are confusing, but good)).
The movie that came out in '84 (directed by David Lynch) was a very skewed version of the book.... but it had... artistic flair, and also brought out some of the atmosphere and character of Dune itself.
The newer movies (really miniseries: Dune, and Children of Dune (Note that Children of Dune was based off of books 2 and 3 of the Dune series: Messiah and Children of Dune) had their moments... but were cluttered with bad acting (with exception of the guy who played Baron Harkonnen). William Hurt is usually good, but I honestly think he was on drugs while acting in the miniseries. They also left so much out... No way can the story of Dune be told in a 4-hour movie... its not possible. I still watch the series every now and then.. just for kicks... But I always ask myself why.
Sorry for the lengthy and unnecessary explaination.
