"Censorship just restricts the first amendment, freedom of speach. When you look at the reasons behind why Bungie has censors, it's for youger members. If I recall correctly, the rating on Halo [1, 2, and 3] is M, for mature (18+). The censors are for the 17- people. So if people followed the orrigional rules, these censors and thus an additional rule, would have never needed comissioning." - Center Scope, Covenant Human Rogues (Bungie.net Group)

So, really, should there be the blam censor? And also, for those who say this is bull. 1- you need to be 13, at least, to register. Then there's also that nice M rating i nthe b ottom right corner of the webpage. So just a statement, figured it could be discussed.

1. Bungie has done more than just Halo.
2. This is a dictatorship, your first amendment flew out the window when you signed up and agreed on the Code of Conduct.
3. You have no rights, play nice.

No we need the blam censor. Age doesn't matter a whole lot, I don't want to see F and N words all over the place.

  • 02.06.2008 1:37 PM PDT

Are you trying to say that profanity or "bad" words should not be censored? Why? If you are a good community member than there should be no need for such words...

Nah, I'm jk, it would be pretty cool, but Bungie has to keep there ENTIRE fanbase.

My YouTube Channel. Just getting into the Machinima business.

We can all get across our message without resorting to swearing, can't we? Also, I would think a Mod would reply to the first amendment thing with something like this;
On Bungie, you have no rights.
Also, the Internet isn't only located in America, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply. Anyways, not trying to argue just for the sake of arguing, I'm actually all for the filter.

EDIT: Lol, Jaf beat me.

There really aren't any internet rules. Put up what you want. If you want then you'll half to make your own site.

The aboce are all to a certain degree.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

The Constiution of the United States does not apply to the speech posted on a privately owned website like bungie.net.

Bungie controls everything. You have no rights. Play nice.

And the profanity filter exists because most of you don't know how to properly use profanity - you just use it when you can't say anything meaningful. Oh, that, and some of you think racial slurs are acceptable in conversation, and are even funny.

News? Podcasts? Machinima? Active forums? Competitions? Jaffa Cakes!? OMG!
Thee Warriors!

Best. Mod. Ever.

It has been discussed. The thing is there's no reasonable/justifiable way to put age restrictions on the site. I've heard plenty of trash talk from people over 18. If this were a website designed to articulate the expressiveness of the English language then sure, take it out. This however, is a community site where we are meant to respect one another.
There is no real advantage to allowing curse words and to be honest the first amendment it pretty much totally irrelevant, given it's a website that contains people from all corners of the Earth.
I also suggest you send an complains to [i]Stosh[/b]. It’s his fault.

I can attest to that. I'm 20 and occasionally I go nuts with the cussing. I don't really cuss at ppl, just aloud. If your gonna do that I suggest you just turn your mic off and let others have a pleasant experience.

On Live ^^^^

Also think of the filter as your mic.

I wish there was a way so that when certain "hot" words are entered..the system will just reject the whole post and make you change it so it is acceptable...

And I am only talking big stuff like racial slurs not the F word. some times you just need to blurt out "stupid -blam!- melee system" (as an example)

So I think Jun's a master chef, because he takes off his helmet and your like whoa, I think he's a chef.

So to shorten this up, Jun is master chef.

Despite my opposition of censorship, I don't really care. I think that about all of the time people will know what word you're trying to use. However, I have noticed a few words that are a bit absurdly labeled as profanity, but it doesn't really matter to me.

Remember that this is a private website and people from all over the world can sign up here, so American laws don't apply anyway.

I nice thing, however, would be the ability to adjust the -blam!- filter in private groups, but it's not something that should be on top of the priorities list.

Not exactly, Tony. American laws do indeed apply here, as do SOME of the laws of many other jurisdictions. The servers are located within the United States, and Bungie is an American company. The laws of the United States apply to it (jurisdiction of laws is largely based on physical location of both yourself and the effects of your activities, rather than the locations of your customers). Because of the worldwide reach of the site, some laws of foreign countries may also apply to Bungie.net, but because the internet is as new as it is, many aspects of this issue are still being worked out in various courts around the world.

To the OP: before attempting to make statements of what the law is, it helps to read the law first. The First Amendment is only one sentence long, so it shouldn't take you that much time. Here is a convenient link.

In case you don't feel like reading it, Achronos's answer was the simplest and most correct statement of the law: the First Amendment to the United States Constitution does not apply here. It states that "Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press . . . ."

The very first word of the First Amendment makes it clear that the Amendment applies only to the federal government of the United States. (As an aside, thanks to the Fourteenth Amendment, the First Amendment applies to State governments as well.) But Bungie LLC is neither one of those -- it is a private corporate entity. Therefore, Bungie can restrict your speech on BNet as much as it pleases. Indeed, Bungie could shut down its Bungie.net forums entirely and thereby prevent you from saying anything at all.

Horrible you say? I don't think there is a word to describe what it'd be like.

There are two groups of people in the world - those that hope, and those that wish. The first group hopes that nothing bad will happen. The second group wishes that they are there when it does. Which one are you?

Frank O'Connor is a 12-year veteran of the videogame magazine industry and has therefore never worked an honest day in his life.

agreed, The reason that it's nice to go to these forums is they are moderated nicely enough that we don't get people who come here just to swear and throw out racial slurs. I've seen sites like that and trust me they have very low memberships.

This is also a community site for Halo 3 and all of Bungie.

This isn't a text based slayer match with all the "power words" involved (as recon would say)

  • 02.06.2008 2:09 PM PDT

Just like purchasing "M" rated games, so is a parents ability to let their child have a B.net account if they so choose. Therefore, it is in Bungie's best interest to make sure this site stays appropriate for all age levels..........thus the -blam- filter.

The US constitution applies to places within the USA. Thats all.

Bungie, being on the internet, is not actually in a country.

Then there are the people who poop in the mash potatoes. Those people get launched out on their asses.

I personally like the blam sensor. There are plenty of 18+ users here who abuse language and would make this place horrible.

Forum Rules for those who care to know what they are.

"Bs: Blame stosh for all of your BS!"

Censorship is needed, especially in these forums. People use vulgar language all of the time and it can get stupid if all they say are insults while dropping the F-bomb. It would be a serious problem and definitely a shut down for the Bungie.net community if we didn't have the censors. Enough said on my part.

*Note: I find it funny how I'm the only "member" in this topic.lol. XD
