I tried to make my signature...

<!--[if lt ie 7]>Your Browser sucks.<![endif]-->

...and I get an error about potentially harmful form data.

*tear*

Does this come as a surprise?

It does in a way, it lets me post the "potentially harmful form data" in a topic or post and it doesn't "harm" anything. So why does the error occur when changing my signature but NOT when posting a topic?

I would have thought the same checking would apply to signatures, topics, posts, personal messages etc.

The forum posts doe not run as scripts..they are forum data , the sigs load on the page with everything else (could be conceived as a script).

Sorry but I really have no idea what you're talking about there. Both the data for signatures and topics/posts is the same... they are both sent to the server via POST, they are both stored in a Database. I don't see much of a difference.

If they are filtering out "potentially harmful form data" out of signatures, they should be filtering it out of topics and posts too.

That's true, your message should be harmful data in both places or in neither.
So you know. Poor you.

I think it's just that the forum, PM and profile systems have different ways of handling the HTML code. For example, you can type the <table> tag and the post displays the tag, but is not affected by the code. However, all HTML is blocked in private messages.

If you like, you can get around the signature HTML blocking with a well-placed formatting BB tag, like this:

<!--[if lt ie 7]>Your Browser sucks.<![endif]-->
That will display the HTML correctly.

shhhhhhh

It's just a failsafe to prevent you from running any unwanted scripts on the site. If you had full access to HTML, your signature could be in size 72 font. :\

Edit: Oh I see what you're saying. Interesting... I would assume then that post data has some difference from signature data. I have no idea.

Hello :)

Maybe it's because that is an HTML a code for hiding data so that only the maker can see it in their editing software. Most text fields don't support HTML.

Does it really matter how many people play it as long as you dont have to maintain servers?
