Invisible hit points? No wonder the game is so frustrating sometimes, Don't you think that the revelation of this valuable information would have been more useful before people started to quit playing matchmaking? I played endless hours of Halo CE and Halo 2, especially Halo 2, and I got tired of Halo 3 within a couple of months. This update will definately fix some issues, but I fear its just a tad late to save it. Also, what I find to be a slight hypocritical is the fact that this update specifically talks about host advantage, which Bungie claimed for two years after Halo 2 came out, didn't exist. LOL

One last thought, next time get some "real gamers" outside of an office environment, and have them test the game on normal internet connections to find the true characteristic of online gameplay.

excited about the new hopper,
ready for some fresh dlc,
and a podcast,
and i didnt really have much of a problem with the melee before (i usually have a pretty fast connection), but if its getting improved, its sounds good!
and i dont play as an elite, but i just recently got steppin razor legit so commando shoulders sound good too!

The weekly bungie update says that people who go into a melee battle with nearly the same health will both die, since in an online enviroment its impossable to say who hit first. I get that, but what about LAN if this is going to happen on LAN then thats lame. What it basically means is that instead of the person with the most health winning, in a close fight you both die. On LAN only the host has a connection advantage, all clients are on a level playing field. But if two clients have the same health in a fight and one throws a melee and then 90ms later the other client melees, the outcome surely should'nt be that both people die. 90ms (0.09 seconds = Just under a tenth of a second) is a noticalbe difference, especially when your playing at a high level.

This will end those moments when you lose and you dont know why but your skill is still not rewarded. If you hit first you should win. Why not have a comparison system. If client1's xbox says you hit first, the host says you hit first but client2 says they hit first then 2vs1, client 1 sould win.

I stand by Halo 2's melee system, yes there were times when the host would win even though it seems they should'nt, but more often than not the outcome was correct. On LAN it worked perfectly, the host still had an advantage but good teamwork always won over host.

All this being said i am really looking forward to playing the updated version when it comes out.

I think the melee-system in Halo 3 is just fine, and it was a great way to implement great disparity between people's connection speed. I honestly can't tell who's the host in melee fights anymore.

Like I said, I think the way it is, is just fine, but it can be frustrating at times when you know that just one tick of health will make all the difference, and your speed doesn't have much to do with it. It's nice that's getting balanced-out a bit, but I guess that's the way it has to be to account for network disparity >_>

I just hope the window of opportunity to get a melee in (and win, because you have just 0.0001f; of he health more) gets narrowed down somewhat.

Oh no they found me out. I used the melee glitch in midair on the front picture of the announcement. Its awesome to see my midair picture being featured as the announcement's picture. I am glad melee is getting fixed. I've been waiting for this for a long time. I can't wait to see two people killing each other at the same time. Its going to be hilarious. Double knockout! Forge playlists! FInally. Bungie continues dominating the world!

Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphors have two parts : form and interpretation; of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom being the briocoleus, the mason.

If both people meele and die at the same time, if this is included in the AU1 I will break my Halo 3 disk and burn it. What in the hell made you decide to do this Frankie, Luke or whomever programed this Melee system? I want your anwser, because this is not acceptable, your catering to the casual crowd, with the wall-mart connections. This isn't a laughing matter, and I think you guys need to tone this Meele fix with a clash similiar to the sword clash, it's a over all better solution than both opponets dying with near the same health.

I think you guys are getting tired of this game, thats why you broke away from Microsoft, I don't disagree with that, however, there needs to be a better fix of this Meele than what your purposing in this update. Like the previous poster said, to hell with the people that cannot afford a decent connection. Thats very kind of you to think on this belief, but it's not good for the over all community. Lag is more of a important factor in this game than the meele, the servers that this game runs on are inscificent for the 300,000 plus players on daily basis. BTB is primarly the worst. Even with a full green connection a wraith tank's Plasma Mortar disapears and damages someone with a invisible explosion.

Listen to this complaint because if it's not up to par with my expectations while humble, will most likely ruin your reputation with alot of gamers including me. It's irrelivant that people express such loyalty when it is not returned in kind. You can come out with these polished treats for the community, but what was the point in paying 800 Microsoft points for three maps and only one truely enjoyable enough to be considered a map worth playing.

I'll be frank with this last bit. You folks at Bungie have great talent in the artistry department, yet lack the sense with your ill-fated bravado, to truely understand what us Halo players truely want out of this game. We want compitition and a real challenge in a atsomsphere that has more enjoyable experiences and less frustration. The game mechanics are broken, there are glitch exploiters, frequent lag, splatters that just knock people away and deplete shields and do not kill, and finally I think all this money that you've aquired off this game has made you ignorant.

 • 02.10.2008 10:55 AM PDT

I tried to sign my signature here but the pen busted off in my screen.
:(

I rarely had any problems with the current melee. It's where I get most of my kills. Now I'm worried I'm going to constantly be simultaneously killed along with my opponent. Also, I'm a HUGE fan of players getting "hurled with unearthly force" when they die from a melee. I didn't know that was even a bug. It's too awesome to take out and doesn't affect gameplay. Why on earth would you take that out? Please leave it in!

What they are doing Sleepy is confusing already broken gameplay with even more flawed gameplay.

Just because a developer makes changes to a game they created, it is not always for the best. They are people as well, humans make mistakes.

To be honest the new melee grew on me, just like the new controls and the new sniper rifle. Just because its new doesn't mean its bad, but I guess if majority rules then lets give it a try =)

This is a sig. No one looks at this. Who cares.

That Mister Chief would look good over the mantle...

Although people would think me crazy somehow.

Is there a date yet for when the first set of the DLC maps will be free?

100ms? WHAT A COP-OUT!

Australians average 250-300ms of ping to america.

This means if we beat down 200ms BEFORE the host we will still miss the battle! Bull-blam!- much?

No Team Snipers mention still?

Just pinged Cogent in America and got an average of 200ms, with Google it is 260. Considering that they are high-end servers connected into the backbone of the internet think how bad average households in America would be. This melee system is going to be epic fail I can tell already.

Back to CoD4.

I hear you mate, fellow Aussie here. The threshold just does not hold up over the Internetz.

Yes it just plain sucks for us Aussies, only thing I have found is good connection filter in double team at a few very specific Aussie hours. It still finds USA players more often than not but at least there are some games on Aussie host.

Forgot something on a different note -

What happened to being able to dodge a melee? In halo 2 you could circle strafe out of a melee attack and then counter melee from the side or assassinate your opponent.

This is no longer the case. I have viewed the game replays so many times to see my USA opponent land a shot but completely miss the melee...but guess what the melee still registers for them and I'm dead.

This is a frustrating change in Halo3 that I believe removes a lot of reflex skill from the game. At the least it certainly favours the USA hosts and USA players by a long shot. Their lunge/melee seems to always connect regardless.

Oddley I share your concern, when it happens to me. I play relatively strange game hours, so sometimes i'll be on Aussie time, European time, hell even Asian time. And the distance gives me a bad connection as well. But this goes beyond locations in the world. I played a BTB last time I gave Halo 3 another shot and it was all Americans and the servers lagged so baddly that the game was nigh impossible to play, besides I play with a few English fellows from the UK and they do not have much latency issues during the prime hours here in the United States, so I do not believe it is your location necesarily, it is the servers that this game plays on that need a over haul. COD4 doesn't have this problem as often as Halo 3 and it disgusts me.

Halo 3 last I checked stands roughly around 400,000 players during the prime hours, last I checked, and thats abit excessive for a Console games population, I doubt even MS can withstand this without dedicating independant regional servers for spacific locatlities.

Why not divide them like Blizzard does their WoW servers? Base the servers on regions instead of one giant CLUSTER -blam!-!

You abviously dont understand the the melee system as they just explained it at all.
1)If you obviously hit melee first you will win
2)If 2 people hit melee at the same time the one with more health will win
3)if the 2 people have an unnoticable difference in health and melee at the same time they will both die
Sounds fair to me

No, you are wrong dude. If you read the whole post throughly and think about they are saying, there is a "time window" for other people to melee. So it doesn't matter if you melee first because someone can melee back and win. Effectively, the one with more health up-close is going to win almost no matter what. Therefore, its a stupid and flawed system like I said in my first post. The "latency reason" should not matter that much in games because good players can always adjust (just like we did in Halo 2 - no one really had problems with it). With this system it is completely variable if you will get the melee kill, even if you melee first -- its stupid and an unsatisfactory result from such a long wait.

Bungie has cheapened the gameplay to me in Halo 3 in general because they have made every weapon and ability to use them (i.e. press buttons more quickly than someone) useless in combat. Look at the difference in the amount of time it takes you to pull out your sword in Halo 3 compared to Halo 2 (or just to change weapons) and you will see that Bungie made Halo 3 to eliminate the "learning curve" so that more inexperienced player can use the weapons more effectively than previous Halo games. Of course, I understand why they did it because they probably thought it would draw more of the general population into playing the games. But to me it made the gameplay less competitive and more importantly, less fun. That's what I think and I am sorry if you disagree with me.
