1) Alternatively, blows are weighted towards direction. Whoever is closer to "center" on their target is given the stronger strike and the kill. (instead of swinging "close" and hitting their shoulder for a lethal kill)


2) You don't have to count bullets, you just have to know who fired first and how long you've kept on target. If you can fire first and keep your crosshair on them then you're up for the win . If you have strayed off target or they fired first then it's best to keep your distance and hope to evade the fire.


1) I like that idea and it would add more balance to the game, but the lag might be an issue there too since the one "most center" might stray from the target.

2) Your second statement is exactly why I hate the gameplay in Halo 3. Basically, the person who shoots first will always win. Bungie made Halo 3 a "b1tch-game." They made it a "hide and seek" game where you have to ambush people in order to get a kill. You can't fight your way out of it like the other games and especially since you can't get in close to melee and kill, you will ALWAYS lose. And that's not really that fun to play. That's why the melee issue is so important to good gameplay and the overall fun of the game. The melee allows for a major difference in the type of game you are playing (e.g. playing like a b1tch or like a gladiator).

It's pretty clear why to me: one guy landed more bullets than the other (even without reading that in the next line of the Update). I don't really see the problem, and the fix looks like it might discourage people from meleeing at all - if chances are they're both going to die. Maybe an alternative fix would be like the sword clash - both players health is reduced to near-death and they rebound off each other to try again.

Does the melee still have more damage if you do one while running or jumping? From the Update, it seems the answer is no. Restoring that feature might be helpful too.

This means if we beat down 200ms BEFORE the host we will still miss the battle! Bull-blam!- much?

I hear you mate, fellow Aussie here. The threshold just does not hold up over the Internetz.

Yes it just plain sucks for us Aussies, only thing I have found is good connection filter in double team at a few very specific Aussie hours. It still finds USA players more often than not but at least there are some games on Aussie host.


The point is that there is no way to compensate for all lag without ruining the gameplay. They have tried to do just that, compensate, but in the end all it does is hurt the gameplay. If it had a decent melee system (like halo 2) then people could atleast have fun lanning (oh I wonder how people got by in HALO CE). Now everyone suffers all the time even on LAN. It's such a stupid communist approach to gameplay, aid the players with sore reflexes and connections.

I think they've stopped reading this already, because the real players are speaking, and not the Bungie Loyalists. Honestly, this Auto-Update has one useful thing. Commando Shoulders. If the Meele is what you suggest, I am going to just put it up for good and say to hell with it. I understand now why people B-itch so much. I see the flaws just as regularly as anyone else that complains about them. It's the simple fact that Bungie isn't doing anything about the complaints and just catering to the players that don't give a damn about the game after a month. Haha I won't crawl back to this game if this MEELE IS NOT GOING TO BE FIXED PROPERLY! Oh man you've no idea how displeased I am in this product. It should be one of those low priced games like Fight Night Round 3, this game isn't worth Sixty Bucks. I am sorry bungie but it's worth about half. Because it's half ass either way. :/ Final post until the next Weekly Update.

i hate the flawed "trueskill" system
i hate the clufted maps
i hate the matchmaking system which needs 5 minutes to seek for a game

anyway i still love h3. but... how long?

making a compromise to "fix" the melee... i afraid of the result. but we will see...
but what make me wonder more...
no words about fixing the spawnsystem?
no words about the "trueskill" system?
no words about the melee lunge?
no words about the hit detection?
no words about the tripmine?

i find no words fot that...

Can you put up a more detailed article about the different damage points dealt by each weapon and hitpionts? It would be interesting to know which weapons are more effective than others etc.

Sounds to me like all you have done is killed a good player as he gets to his first opponent and is being shot by someone else, rather than him killing the first guy then turning round and killing the second. I have to live with it which is annoying.

I think its a great idea to kill both players if they are close healthwise and shieldwise. I would much rather get killed and get a kill than take my chances with lag or apparent lag. I always seem to lose close beat downs.

Interesting how body points recharge more slowly than shield points.

Sounds good, but any update on Oddball melee? Countless times I've meleed the ball carrier who clearly had no shields either first or at the same time as they hit me, and I die because the ball is seemingly the end-all although he had no shields and I heard my melee crunch.

The melee sytem in my eyes is not much of a problem because of the fact that a melee attack usually doesnt kill a person with full sheilds and actually relies on timing and reliability to use a weapon and not be a little whimp going around assasinating people. On occasion a melee attack can come in handy, but it is not the biggest problem in halo 3. The problem is the neglect to bad hitboxes of such armor as the hyabusa. While playing sniper gametypes, which I am a big fan of, I continuously recieve a great deal of frustration when headshots don't count or don't even dammage a player. Another thing is that when I play snipers, I turn melee kills to negative points because they dont require skill. Please bring back snipers playlist in ranked matches.

will there be an option in the forge setup menu to turn off kill walls? i think it would be perfect to play battlefield 2552 in the big area surrounding standoff, or make a skydiving map on valhalla, think of the possibilities!

Instead of making the timing different on melees, how about you make more of a difference on each weapon when you melee? Now theres almost no difference between a smack with an assault rifle and with a brute shot, and in the end of Halo 2 you really stressed making each weapon fairly different from eachother when it came down to melees. If the assault rifle, or example, was lowered to 50 or so instead of 70 when hitting, then it would take 3 hits to kill someone with it, which really makes more sense. It would then give the blades on brute weapons a real purpose, and would be more important in gameplay.

There would also be less complaints on melee system, because chances are, there would be less close range fights. That would halo more like halo, instead of smackdown.

Maybe his wouldn't work, because I have no way of knowing unless I were to set it up in the games programming. You can't make certain weapons' melees stronger or weaker in forge. But I hope you at list try it out a few times; I really do think that would clear up the melee complaints for the most part.

Does it really matter how many people play it as long as you dont have to maintain servers?

Finally, a clear explanation of every single little minute detail that we have all been wondering about. Especially its nice to know now that your health isnt back up to full for about 15 seconds, you better believe that that is going to be affecting some higher level strategy from now on. and its nice to know how much damage a weapon does, etc. its nice to know and its nice to see how it is finally being addressed. thanks bungie, you finally came through.

Do you people even realize half of what the Melee dilemma is? The lunge! The lunge is ridiculous! At this point your player can practically shoot across the map.

The new melee system changes couldn't have been better. I think it will suite Halo 3 well and please most of the Halo 3 population. I'm really looking forward to the change. I wasn't expecting Bungie to host online Halo 3 tournaments! This sounds awesome and will be a blast. Again, great job interacting with the community Bungie.

Last I checked, Frankie's painting was going for $800. Haha, an awesome little project by Frankie =P

Oh yeah, I hope you folks at Bungie don't pick on Nosferatu too hard while he's there ;)

I'm very glad they are tweaking the melee system, but it still sound a little noob friendly. Hopefully it works out better then how it sounds...

But seriously, Halo 2's melee system was fine... host advantage and all.

Now how about getting rid of the lunge in melee... it would really bring back the dynamics to the melee system.
