There is already a "report" feature, use that if you must.

Subject: Vote to Lock Thread(Forum Improvement Idea)

I think near the bottom right where it says
"Quote" there should be a button that says "Vote to Lock", and if more the 75% of people who reply to it the thread vote to lock the thread, it would get locked, this would make Forum Ninja's jobs easier, and help clear up alot of the spam that has been going around the forums lately. what you guys think?

  • 02.08.2008 10:39 PM PDT

"Report as Spam" is your ally in the heat of battle. That's what locks the thread.

So, in theory, if I were to create a thread, and only three people replied to it and reported it for whatever , it would automatically get locked?

Nah.

This is why we have mods, this forum is not a democracy, you get no vote only discretion. Moderators decide what thread stays and what thread goes, you can flag threads for review with report as spam, if this feature were in place everyone disagreeing with the OP would vote to lock the topic and bye-bye goes free-speech.

You shouldn't even be posting in a thread that needs to be locked. Just press the Report button and leave it alone.

The intention is good, but the idea is illogical. That request simply doesn't make sense. You can't give the "members" the ability to lock a thread because there will always be ways of manipulation. If someone truly wanted to lock a valid and constructive topic, they could make alts and use your suggestion to their benefit.

That's not how the Bungie.net forums operate now and is not something being considered by the Bungie Online Team in the near future. If you feel a thread needs to be locked, report it. Even though it takes some time, that is a job for moderators only; they will get to it and handle it appropriately.

No, this could be abused way too easy. Just use the report function.

I'm sorry, but that sounds like a dumb idea, if the thread is against the rules you report it.

The idea is great, but it does need work. Alot of work.

Or something alot more simple like a threshold ratio of reports against time.
If there is a significant amount of reports say in 3 minutes the thread is locked. So a thread wont be locked if there is only 10reports in 72hours compared to 10 reports in 5minutes.

Then again isn't this why we have moderators?

But if a thread should be locked, no one should be replying to it in the first place. So, even if the vote to lock thing is in place, the thread would be bumped.

Thats true. Replying to spam is actually against the rules. People should be banned for it as a detterent.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

I disagree with this idea. This idea has a good motivation and purpose, but I do not trust the masses enough. Moderators here are chosen because their judgment is exceptionally better than that of the masses. While they might make the occassional mistake like any of the rest of us, they are much more likely to make the correct decision in locking a thread because it breaks the forum rules rather than because it is about an unpopular subject.

For example, a person making a well-written and non-inflammatory criticism of Halo 3 and then posting it in the Halo 3 Forum has made a post that is perfectly on-topic and valid for discussion. But the masses would be likely to "vote to lock" that thread because Halo 3 criticism threads are unpopular in that forum.

As a result, the decision to lock should -- and must -- be entrusted to the moderators who are chosen for that position because of their judgment and decisionmaking skills.

no, this will not and should not be added. this would do little to improve the forums, and it is pointless. if you do not want to read a thread, then do not read it. if you see spam, then report it.

a thread need not appeal to 75% of readers to be worthwhile. heck, a handful of guys who post in packs and who have fights with members could go around closing threads if they wanted to.
