Hi guys, i've got a problem.

Bought Halo 2 for Vista about 2 months ago, used Tray & Play feature and started to install the game while playing, right?
Well, my PC BsOD'd during that time (Blue Screen of Death) and then when I went to play again I got a message stating "Files are missing and damage in the installation directory." I have looked ALL OVER for the directory (Yes, I know WHAT a directory is.), and it is not there - therefore I cannot even startup, uninstall, or install the game.

So what can I do? I really don't want to re-format my computer, knowingly that it won't work (I don't do wipe all), and I can't system restore (all points before the install are gone).

Help please.

- Hato

Stupid parents let their stupid children play games that are rated M when they should be playing Big Birds Spelling Adventures

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

Delete all of your temporary files and try it again.

Thanks for the idea Aj6627, but it didn't work.

Whenever I pop in my disk I always get the error "Files are missing or Damaged in the Installation Directory".

Of course, there being no directory this creates a problem..

Delete all halo2-related registry entries.

Exactly. As for the already installed files, if you're on the 64-bit version of Vista, they'll be in the "\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo 2" folder. Otherwise the regular Program Files folder will do.

I'm on Home Premium, 32 bit. What keywords should I use for the registry?

  • 02.10.2008 10:02 AM PDT

"regedit" no quotes

I know how to get into the registry, I don't know what keywords to use to find the Halo 2 files.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

I can't find any promising looking entries in my registry matching "halo2" or "halo 2". I tried Local Machine\Software\Microsoft but couldn't find anything there either. I think your options are:

- Phone Microsoft support for help
- Erase and re-install Vista, opting to install Halo 2 fully instead of playing right away.

Yeah, you know what - my computer needs a large wipe anyways. I think that's what i'll do but i'll lose a ton of stuff in the process (Team Fortress 2, CS, CoD4 stats) etc.

Is it worth all of that?

I've reformatted my computer many times. That's all it takes. Time.
