First let me start by saying please don't ban me for this.
Nothing I ever post is meant to hurt the forums in anyway.
But since when did upholding the rules come before the good of the forums?
I was just recently banned because "technically" I broke the rules by telling a member who posted an off-topic thread in the Halo 3 section that his thread would be better suited in The Flood section(aka off-topic board). This was considered posting in a spam thread and I was banned. First off I think it was pretty ridiculous that the member who posted the thread would be treated so harshly for posting a useless thread, and then for everyone who posted in the thread to be banned was definitely taking things a bit too far.

Again, I realize that I technically did break the rules. But isn't there a line between enforcing the rules and uselessly banning?

Upholding the rules and doing what's best for the forum are not mutually exclusive -- they are linked. Not upholding the rules leads to chaos, because there would be no punishments for rulebreakers and other miscreants.

There is a difference between an off-topic post and a spam post. An off-topic post is something that is constructive and can be discussed, whereas a spam post has no topic, cannot be discussed and breaks rules. The Flood is for off-topic posts that do not fit in any other forums, but can still be discussed, whereas spam posts that have no meaning aren't tolerated anywhere.

It is standard procedure nowadays to blacklist people for replying to spam, because all it does is just bump the post farther up the listing.

If you believe that you were unjustly punished, you should contact the moderator who blacklisted you about it, and they could probably clear it up.

Stop sending me group invites -blam!-s!

Let me guess, Yoozel banned you?

Follow the rules and you won't have to worry about it.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I understand your concerns, and I empathize with your situation.

However, and there's always a "however" in life, its best to do as Yoozel recommended in his sticky post and avoid posting in those topics all together. If you want to be a good and helpful member, which I always encourage everyone to aspire to be, send a PM to that user explaining why his topic was in the wrong place. Or just report it and let a mod take care of it.

It sucks that it has come to a point where good and helpful members might be punished for being good and helpful, but something needs to be done in that forum. Its out of control, and as sad as I am to say, it requires some ruthlessness.

  • 02.09.2008 8:10 PM PDT

Just report spam threads. And maybe PM the user and tell him it could be better in another forum.

I, like you, am a light-sound-vibration complex that resonates with others. I have hopes and dreams and ambitions, just like you! I AM, and so are you! Yes, we are one and the same, you and I.

This sort of warning is no longer really justified now that we have the report as spam feature.

Is that a serious question? Upholding the rules is for the good of the forums.

You posted in a spam thread, you boosted the spam to the top of the page. You should have just reported it and moved on without saying a thing.

I do think the moderation has become a bit harsh recently. Honest to god, I always feel like I'm walking eggshells around here. Every time I post something even the slightest bit controversial, I'm afraid some moderator who's had a bad day it going to wind up so far up my ass that I will begin to taste banhammer in the back of my throat.

A bit harsh? Have you been to the Halo 3 forum? Hello? If i were a moderator I'd lock every "sign here if [insert anything here]", the list of annoying threads is huge, the forum is a mess.

Moderators are doing a favor to the world by being harsh.

That's not even that bad. I have way worse stories.

Say I have a "friend." He commented on another's post about something. He said something along the lines of "little green buddy" in his comment. This resulted in a perma-ultra ban. Meaning no other accounts of his could operate on B.Net, including any account trying to post on B.Net on his computer. These other accounts would be subsequently blacklisted for using the same IP. Harsh? You be the judge.

Personally, I'd like to see every person who posts in any spam thread given at least a 3 day blacklist.

Hopefully it'd hit many well intentioned people, so they'll realize that despite their intentions, any reply to a spam thread is hurtful. At least they would have a chance to change. You're not going to stop a spammer by banning him.

Ok picture this scenario. Its my first time on the site and im looking for people to play halo 3 with. Im familiar with online forums, just not Bungie´s forums, so Im looking through the forum list first to see where I should post the question. The forum where its supposed be has the following description:

This forum is for promotion and recruiting for groups and misc. fan projects.

Ive been a member of this site for years and I wouldnt be able to tell that I could look for MM partners in there from that vague description if it hadnt been for the fact that other people have been refering to it whenever someones been posting in the wrong forum. In my opinion it seems better suited for the Halo 3 forum or optimatch based on desciptions so how in the world is a new member suppose to know?

This is the reason to why I think its a little too harsh to warn/blacklist people over it. Im not saying that enforcing the rules is wrong but atleast give them a chance.

Another thing I have a huge problem with is that its quite apperent that many of the mods are generalizing the members in the Halo 3 forum as idiots and seems to think that the more people in there they ban the better. People are seeing the mods as some form of Bungie representatives so it doesnt stike me as particulary good that they are sending out negative vibes towards the one group here that is making sure that Bungie´s still a financially operative company.

Also, and this is somewhat ironic since most mods agreed on improving the last time it was up in the Septagon, what happend to adding a post and description to the locked thread?
I agree on that most of the locks are quite obvious but apperently it wasnt obvious enough for the participants to not post. It is clear that a lot of people havent read the stickies so it could work as preventative messures.

I understand your concern. Something similar just happened to me. But it's like Evilcam says, if we all would learn to report spam and not try and fix the problem ourselves things will be better. I'm still a little mad that I lost my title but I'm sure it will come back :(.

A bit harsh? Have you been to the Halo 3 forum? Hello?

Dude, do you even know me? I post an anti-Halo 3 Forum thread here on an almost weekly basis.

Besides, you're missing the point. The moderation needs to be harsh, yes. But the biggest problem I see is that it's harsh in the wrong places. Yes, the Halo 3 Forum needs more regulation, that's a given. But other forums seem to be getting unfair treatment, and it even leads to hypocrisy at times.

Example: I posted lyrics to a song I know that I thought were funny, and I was curious to see the community's thoughts on it, and it gets locked out of the blue. And yet, shortly later, I see two other lyric threads, that are alive and well. Why did mine get locked, and not theirs?

If you honestly think that that's spam, take the "a" train up to the Halo 3 Forum in Harlem. Like you said, all those "sign here if..." threads, and so on seem to go on until time stops. Not to mention those godforsaken "Anon VS Scientology", "Anon will rule all!" "OMG February 10" threads that show up continually. We get it. Boring.

You say tomato; I say potato.

Posting in a spam thread makes you guilty by association.

I can still relate to your possition. I've been banned at least once for unjust causes, or I felt that I wasn't in the wrong.

Move on and get over it. Definitely do not start an off topic group that has a rather large banned member base. If you do, be sure to weed out those jerks who think they can bring down Bnet by spamming the public forums. If you don't weed them out, at least make sure your group members don' start changing their sigs to show their loyalty to your group. If you still haven't listened to my advice, then expect a wayward moderator to make an alt acount, befriend one of your high ranking members, delete every forum post in your group, and resign his moderator status a week later... *cough*toast*cough*

That would suck, eh?

Has this thing run its course yet? Can I lock it?

We aren't changing, we might get harsher in some places. It's certainly on the cards. Don't like it? I don't care.

See, we have this problem - half of you make threads asking for more moderators (no doubt in the vain hope it will be you) or saying we aren't doing our jobs. Then we get threads like this where we can all sit and pour our hearts out about the big bad moderators who are biased because you were one of 50 people who were banned in the same thread.

If you guys want to complain about inconsistency, complain about your own. It's not like we're trying to screw this place up.

So, while you are composing a nice PM to Achronos saying I'm a racist, sexist, robot-satanist, I will be in the Halo 3 forum you all cry about, venting my rage on the idiots who can't read rules.

HAVE A SUPER DAY!
