Thanks, that helped a lot. But that raises another question, "What about the motherboard?" What motherboard is best for AMD, & which is good for P4. And ofcourse it has to have a good RAM & Video Slot (x8).

dude you are so stupid to build a 3.1 ghz pc for $1100 i can make a 3.2 GHZ 1024 Ram Geforce 5600 for 500 euros wich is something around 600 bucks that is almost half the cost and with a 15 inch flat screen moniter

In fact 2 xeon cpu can ban a better option for gaming than a single high end p4.

You can use the first cpu to run all the windows and basic stuff and use the other one 100% dedicated to your game.

But this is realy expensive...

Well the answer to this question depends a lot on your budget, your needs as a computer user (what you are going to use it for), and how much you trust "new" technology (PCI-Express, 64 bit CPU's). Personally I stick with the major names (links to these brands are listed in the original post). I like warrantees, and if you have a motherboard blow a capacitor or other integral piece of circuitry, then you will too. Also If you are building a whole new system you have to choose your mobo (motherboard) on what kind of other hardware you want to attach to it (i.e. SATA, RAID, PCI-X, DDR2), and if you want things like gigabit LAN, or 8.1 surround-sound. These questions must first be answered by you (and your wallet) before you should choose your mobo. If this is just a replacement of an older mobo/CPU, and you are going to be connecting your current hardware to a newer mobo/CPU; then you have to make sure that the newer mobo is compatible with your older equipment. For a great "new" mobo Asus has the A8V; this mobo is for the new socket 939 64bit athlon/FX chips from AMD it supports 4gb of RAM, has an onboard WIFI-G expansion slot, and gigabit LAN network interface connector. Not bad for a new mobo :)

Still you should shop around and see what other companies are producing before you buy anything. This way you can match a mobo type up with the needs you have as a user.

First of "dude" calling people "stupid" shows little intelligence on your part. Secondly this information (and most of the questions) are coming from the U.S./Canada. So Flaming people about how "euro" people can buy hardware for less is also not showing any intelligence. We in the U.S. have to wait for our hardware to arrive on a big boat from places like China, and Taiwan. It is in these places the skilled hands of our Asian brothers are building the next best thing for our voracious new-technology-hardware appetites. We here in the U.S./ Canada are very appreciative to these hard working men and women, and also show our appreciation to the people on the ship that bring them over this big watery thing called the Pacific or Atlantic Oceans. To show how appreciative we are we pay things like taxes, and levys, and a list of other appreciation tokens to people like our government (who always need cash for some reason) so that these products flow freely into our glorious nation, and into our hot little hands. So that being said some times the prices people get in Europe are a little cheaper, and the fact that you may be purchasing non-brand-name parts may have something to do with it also. So instead of flaming someone here in this topic I ask that you please post something that actually has something to do with the topic (i.e. building new computers..not the price to do so) . Thanks for the input :)

Yes this is an option (dual Xeon), and yes this is VERY expensive. Plus you can get similar performance from a single AMD 64bit CPU solution also.

Very true; If you are planning to use your computer as either a server or a workstaion to use such programs as 3D Studio Max, Maya, or any 3D CAD/CAM programs then dual CPU's are definately the best way to go. Also Intel makes a 64bit Itanium CPU built for workstations. Dual CPU set-ups are also good for video editing. These dual CPU motherboards dont come cheap though. So if this is what your looking at doing with your new computer then pinch those pennies!

Your welcome! I saw that many needed help and decided to lend a hand, and Im glad that it is working.

Yes you need an OS (operating system). Any of the Microsoft Wiindows OS (except 95) should work just fine with any hardware configuration. If you are a beginner at computer building I would suggest Windows XP (XP Pro if you have the extra cash, but if not then XP Home will do fine), and if you are buying it make sure that you get the version with SP1 (service pack 1) included. This SP1 package makes driver loading easier. The OS is the most important piece of software you will ever buy for your new computer; so keep that disk safe, and make sure no one gets your CD-Key. Good hunting for your new computer hardware, and always make sure your getting the most you can for the price you are paying. If you are curious about any certain aspect just message me, and I will shoot you a message right back.

Those LGA cpu are bs, the socket are said to broke after 3-4 cpu removal. BTW all the new feature like ddr 2 are just gimmick and dont give a single % of improvement. The chips are also said to be very hot.

Well first off lets just understand that anything from intel runs very hot. Also that this newer tech still is in the first stages of development. So not alot of other companies are going to buy into until it has proven itself to actually be a good product. Not only those two things, but usually the newest tech goes hand in hand with the newest bugs. You can be excited, thats to be expected, but in the face of 64bit tech from AMD I wouldnt really get that excited. In 5-6 years all computer software will be written for 64bit, it is the natural progression of things. LGA is the new kid on the block since intel is feeling the heat from AMD's socket 939. Now intel is a great company, but i would never buy one of thier processors because of the heat factor. This is my choice, but you may differ on opinion about intel, and that is your choice. Either way I am here to help you put togather a new computer based on what hardware you select.

Wow you can use your xbox to email people, or pay your bills online, or browse the internet? Wait, Wait.. your xbox can play other massivly multiplayer games (5000 people on a server) like planetside? Whoa you must have a magical genie in that xbox! Its so amazing that I am in disbelief! Geez I wish I had an xbox so it could become obsolete when the new xbox2 comes out and all the games arent compatible with my console... OH WAIT.. I own a killer PC gaming rig that is compatible with almost all forms of video games... not only that but I can open up my PC and "upgrade" it with newer and better parts, but then again I dont have a magical genie inside an xbox..

So if your like me, and want to play your games at higher resolution than a puny xbox. Your probably not like this gimp that flames a PC building thread with xbox lameness. To bad he is stuck in the "console" world. Maybe his parents cant afford to buy him a computer, or maybe he is too lazy to get a job and buy one himself. Its just too bad that more people who think consoles are "all that" dont realize that the PC is the true gaming platform of choice. Then again there could be people (like the one quoted above) that are just too stupid to realize it.

k, so i have a dell dimension 4300 that ive had for a while...about the only thing ive done to it was add RAM up to 768 and change the video card to a radeon 9600 series

everything else is stock including a slow and old p4 1.6 processor

well, so far call of duty, day of defeat, counterstike, blah blah blah have all run fine as well as all my other programs after i replaced the videocard and upgraded my RAM...

then came the halo trial version...it works ok with everything turned on and at highest levels...until theres more than 2 things moving on the screen...

well, im figuring i have the ram and the videocard pushing everything, and my processor just doesnt have the power to take full advantage....

well, now that i cant wait till november to play halo online i wanna switch to to a faster AMD finally anyways, at least now i have an excuse, i have around 500 bucks to spend, and theres a few comp stores around that do custom stuff, but id rather find out here first, becuz ur not trying to make moolah off me, lol

so i need tips on how to switch my older P4 1.6 into a AMD machine...

if u can gimme a price on the AMD 64 u keep talking about, and keep seeing in ads...lol

but a step below that wouldnt hurt either lol, thanks in advance...

Hello Han-blam!-blazzed,

Well first off I have to give you my honest opinion about dells "dude you got ripped off" (a parody of their commercials). Dell buys the lowest bidder hardware (i.e. whoerver will make the hardware the cheapest dell buys it). So upgrading the things you can (RAM, CPU, Graphics Card) wont usually make up for the things you cant (Front Side Bus speed). So if you want an Athlon instead of a pentium. You will basically have to buy a new computer. This is because you will have to replace the motherboard, CPU, Power Supply, RAM (probably), and possibly the case (as the form fitting factor may be very different). Go to my original post, and click on the PriceWatch.com link. There you can find the best prices on any hardware. Sometimes local computer stores will price-match other web sites within about 10%. Take your $500 and buy a new motherboard and processor, and then save another 500, then buy 1 gig of RAM and a new aluminum case with a big power supply (480 watt or better), then buy a big harddrive, and you might want to get a new enthusiast style graphics card (geforce 6800ultra) for your new machine. I suggest keeping your older system togather and working. As it will make a great home entertainment center (jukebox, movie center) ,and also will be great for downloading stuff while you play games on your new machine. If you need any further help.. just post here again and I will do my best to be of assistance. I hope this is usefull you.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

okokok PLEASSSEEEEEEEEEE answer this soon. I need a faster CPU to run halo for the Comp. However, I don't want to buy just any ol' CPU and have it not work. I know from my bro that I need an Intel CPU. I'm willing to spend about 180 Max for it. nothin great, but i want it to be nice. I have researched these for about 2 weeks now, with null results. please help me or I will die.

Also, My pops made this (hes good with comps, but dosent like to do stuff with them after works over, his job is a consultant. Long hours.) custom, if it helps.

ok, ok, just relax pink menace....

First off if you want a faster CPU then you either can buy the fastest that your mother board can handle, or buy a new motherboard and CPU that is compatible with all the other hardware you already have. If your mother board is an intel based chipset (i.e. only accepts intel CPU's) then just read the motherboard manual that came with it. In this manual it should have a guide on what CPU's can go onto your mother board. I would suggest that you buy the best you can for your availible funds. Or you could save more of your money, buy a new mother board/CPU combo, and build a new computer with your faster chipset. Its really up to you. Saving when there are so many possibilities to buy stuff is hard, but if you sock it away some where (like a savings account). It is easier because it isnt burning a hole in your pocket. Remember always to look around for the best prices. If you need any more help, then post again or msg me. I hope I helped.

You did. BTW: Sorry if I came off a little tense. I've been getting rather frustrated at... my lack of expertise in this area. Thanks for the info. Ill call my pops for the mother board manuel. Does the mother board say on it what type it is, then could I use that to get the manuel off the net? I'm not sure my pops still has the manuel.

I can understand how computers can make you tense. Even after getting my A+ and MCSE certification some PC problems that I have encountered still boggle my own mind. This usually leaves me totally freaked out and very annoyed (so I usually log onto a net game and frag until the solution comes to me). The name and serial number of the motherboard is usually printed on it. Just take the cover off your computer (dont touch any of the inside parts), and make sure you are unscrewing the most outside edge screws as you dont want to unscrew your power supply (also make sure the computer is turned off). The manufacturers name and mother board model number is usually printed on the edge of the mobo (motherboard). Sometimes its right in the middle. Just take that info down and search for the makers name first, then for the model number on the mobo makers webpage. If you have any other problems or questions just post and I will get to them quick. Im glad this is helping.
