Thanks alot, ill take that all into consideration. oh, and one more thing, wats the best sound card on the market?

Sound is half the experience of gaming, or movies, or cool flash driven websites... ok sound is VERY improtant. Creative makes a huge line of gerat soundcards. If you want to be able tio listen to your games or movies in 5.1 digital surround then get a SoundBlaster Live! with 5.1 dolby. If you have a little more cash go with the Audigy2 series from Creative. They have alot of options and are a really solid card, plus are the only soundcard makers with 24bit high definition sound. I own both the 16bit sound blaster Live! and the Audigy2 ZS platinum pro, and I gotta tell you that they ROCK.

i got an emachenes t2200 around january of 2003 and since then i upgrated my graphics card to a geforce 4 5600 and sometimes when i play a game that is of a really high quality like gta vice city halo pc or call of duty my screen goes black in the middle of a game when im playing so i would like to know what the problem is and how do i fix it

First off you need to update your geforce drivers off the Nvidia webpage. Then turn off all the extra graphics options on all your games. Now you should do fine. My guess is that your Geforce 4 does not have the power to render what you want it to at the setting you want it to. Or something about your pre-built computer does not like your new graphics card. If there is an on-board graphics card be sure and disable it in the System menu from your Control Panel. Also try opening your case and dusting out the inside with a can of air. sometimes the heat sink can get clogged on your card and cause a GPU overheat which causes a shutdown. If you get a new card (which you probably should) I would go for the slighty more expensive geforce FX 5700 or better, and make sure the memory speed (not the size) is 128bit. I hope this helps. Maybe next time you will decide to build your own instead of upgrading a pre-built.

Hey are the gaming computers on Tiger Direct any good, or should i save my money for making my own?

The computers on tiger direct are older stock that brand name computer makers are selling to tiger direct to get rid of. Just to give you and idea of what the "brand" names in computers do. First they look for the lowest bidder on everything that goes into thier computers. Thats right none of the "brand" names actually make anyhing that goes into thier product. They buy it from other makers. Then after they cut corners on hardware quality they build (on an assembly line) and load thier own software ( that they are getting paid to put on you computer from different software companies ) which is usually a bunch of crap that you dont want. So not only are you going to get a machine with a hard drive full of spyware and ad-ware, but you are going to pay for it. The company you bought it from is making money on the fact that if you want to keep your warrantee you have to have such software loaded. So in the end all you are really buying with a "brand" name is the "name" . So save and build it yourself. That way you avoid bad hardware and worse software.

i'm pretty new to computers and i was wondering if it is possible to find/build a notebook with good gaming capabilties for LOTS of halo

Notebooks are awsome for thier portability, but for gaming they usually lack the graphics capability that is needed for the eycandy extrordinare that usually people want out of thier games. From what I hear the new G4 powerbooks are good for halo (I dont know a thing about Macs I just heard this from a buddy). Both alienware (overpriced) and Falcon Northwest (very overpriced) offer notebooks with higher graphics capabilites than most, but you will pay for it. As I stray from the notebooks myself I cannot advise too much on any type of quality machines. A word to the wise: Buying a notebook is like buying a piece of fine china. Once its been used (or dropped) a lot it doesnt work that good. This means that all the parts in a notebook are usually non-upgradeable. The drivers and BIOS are written by the company making it, so if they consider it too old to write anyhing new for, you are left unsupported. If anything goes wrong with it, you have to ship it to the maker, then they ship it back (takes about 3-4 weeks). So if you need a computer at all times your out of luck. Also the notebooks you are going to look at are around $1800-$3000 (basically the price of a GREAT PC). I hope this helps, and if you ever want to build a PC I will be here to help.

With that much you will have a lot of choices. Start looking at the different links on my original post to help you see what kind of quaility products are out there. Then post here with what you think you might want. Then I will help you sort out the poo from the gold.

Moriarity, i saw your post and i need you to take the poo out from the gold i have in my parts list for my gaming pc. Im not getting an emachines anymore, i realized they suck and they are a WASTE OF MONEY. I got a really big present that improved my budget from 700$ to 1000$ ( may be ill spend 100$ more if i need too) so now i have lots of options. I want my pc to work REALLY fast. Im planing to build an amd based machine with the amd 64-bit 3200 CPU. I will post here the parts list and i want you to know that if you tell me to change the mobo ( im not sure which to get cause i want one with out graphics and sound in it) I want the new generation mobos ex: the ones with nforce 3 chips and things like that. I also want to know the kind of ram that will work in it ( ill go for the brand kingston). I dont know how to chose a HD cause i dont know the fast ones (fast searching) and the ones in which i may trust in ( the brand) i want one with like 60gigas or may be a bit more ( although i dont think i will use more than 40G, but a bit more is not harmful , because i dont know when im going to need more and i dont want to get another HD when im out of space). The graphics card is one of the most important things for a gaming machine and i dont want to get a good one like an ati x800 because they are like 500$ so ill wait some months for getting the powerful graphics card i want ( maybe in january ill get the super g. card. mean while i wnat to get the other kind of performance ( like spped and memory) of the pc to the MAX. I will post the list on the afternoon. I will finish it after lucnh ( i still need to choose some parts)

Here is a link (click here) to a great site called Toms Hardware Guide. The link is to an article of how to build a great PC gaming machine for under $1000. It will really help you in getting the most for your money. If what you see there is not what your after then post the specs of what you are looking at buying in this thread ,and I will give you my opinion.

Thought I didn't have time to read the posts in-between, I can tell you now this man know's what he's talking about. I'm putting together a new system myself, actually - while a lot of it will be put together by the good people at Cyberpower Inc. (it's simply not any cheaper to do all the grunt work myself) there are a few key parts I'm installing myself. Anyways, I'm posting this because if you want a badass gaming PC that will run anything except Doom 3 (the tech for it's not even out yet!) maxed out this is the system for you. Anyways, here are the important components:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 FX-53

Motherboard: Asus SK8V, VIA K8T800 Chipset

Video Card: ATi Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition

Memory: 4 512MB sticks of DDR400 RAM

HDD: 2 74GB 10,000RPM Western Digital Raptor Hard Drives

Power Supply: Super Alien 500 Watt

Monitor: NEC Multisync FE2111SB 22" Flat-screen Monitor

Optical Drive 1: 16x DVD-ROM & 52x32x52 CD-RW Combo Drive

Optical Drive 2: 12x DVD-R/RW & CD-RW Combo Drive

Sound Card: Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS 7.1

Speakers: Creative Inspire T7700 7.1 Surround System

Case: X-SuperAlien Server 500W w/ Window & LCD Temperature Display

Oh yea, and there's going to be red neon. Lots and lots of red neon, to go with the black case. Also, for some reason red doesn't blind you in the dark, which is where I'll be playing.

One last thing; tomshardware.com, while it is a good site, is biased towards nVidia. Newegg.com and pricegrabber.com are great sites - I found the aforementioned video card for $330 less than most places were offering it.

Moriarity....

I already read that article from tomshardware and im still going with my list. The links are in my list for you to see the item and whatever thing you want to do with it, also because im getting everything from that store because it is near me and its has good prices. I would like to know whats not compatible in the list.

Here is the list:

- HD : ? ( i dont know what brand is better between Seagate, western digital, and Maxtor. thats why i havent chosen a HD) i think 80 G is enough for a HD.

- Mobo : ASUS K8V SE Deluxe ( i chose this one because .... i dont know but i like it because its ASUS [a brand recommended in your guide], new and pretty good i think, also because its compatible wiht the cpu im getting)
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1513

- CPU : AMD Athlon 64 3400 ( pretty good cpu recommended in coylter's list in a sticky post) http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1453

- Case : Antec PFII Series 1040BII 400W PSU. (i want to know if the asus k8v deluxe fits in this case because i like the case and ANTEC is also recommended in coylters guide in his sticky post)
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1241#

- Ram : 1 stick 512mb DDR PC3200 Kingston Hyper x ( i want to know if this is compatible with the asus k8v )
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1250
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket754/k8vse-d/overview.ht m <-- This second link takes you to the asus web pag for the asus k8v se where you can see a list of all the ddr 400 ram sticks they have tested on the mobo ( i dont understand the list =S. i see a few kingston but i dont know if any of those is the one i posted here. i would like you to tell me whether this ram is ok or if this kingston wont work with it)

- CD/DVD drive : ? i dont know which to choose :S (i would like you to recommend me a fast one that can burn cds and dvds)

- sound card : ? i know nothing about this cards.

- video cards: maybe ill get the ati 9800 pro 128mb after i build my pc. (maybe) i would also like a recommendation in this ( i like ati more than nvidia XD ) <--- forget it, im buying hti card with everything else... ill get the radeon 9800 pro 128mb http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1215

- speakers : i will get creative 5.1 surround speakers.
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1063

- monitor : i have one here in my house without use. ( i will use that one)

- mouse and keyboard: i will get a really good wireless microsoft that i like very much.

- ???? i dont know if i need something else for the gaming pc i ll like to build =P

That is all for now...

Sir you (and cyberpowerinc.com) are putting togather a monster. The System Specifications that you have listed are amongst some of the best (and well priced) products availible to systems-builders. Thank you for posting in the thread. The two biggest battles in the computer hardware world today are obviously ATI versus nVIDIA , and Intel versus AMD. In the end it all depends on personal preference. Some Writers in certain web sites with ratings are biased to certain brands or Makers of hardware. Some are not biased at all. In my eyes the Geforce 6800 ultra (evga, or Leadtek) would have been the right card for that system. Im a freak for Shader Model 3.0 though. ATI let me down years ago when they made the Radeon jump and stopped supporting drivers well; I had a ATI Rage Fury Maxx (it was a neat card with 2 rage128 gpu's on it with 64mb of memory) , and when ATI came out with the "raedeon" they stopped writing drivers for this card, and this made me upset as it was my only card and I wanted to use it with XP, but you cant because ATI never wrote a Driver for it, My card was produced just before the raedeon line came out, but for some reason ATI thought it un-necessary to write drivers for it because they were to busy with thier new release... So now all I buy is nVIDIA. IT just seems to me that ATI makes gamer style cards as a second thought to thier Workstation line of cards. As nVIDIA treats both the gamer and the designer/workstation cards as separate but equal when it comes to support and quality. Thusly...YES I am biased to the nVIDIA based GPU cards. But come on man... I know that you have seem a bunch of reviews and they all show that nVIDIA and ATI are basically neck and neck, and the same goes with AMD and Intel. It is all about preference. Good Job on building (err having built) a great system. Just wondering.. How much did that all cost??

- HD : ? ( i dont know what brand is better between Seagate, western digital, and Maxtor. thats why i havent chosen a HD) i think 80 G is enough for a HD.

Go For Seagate they are reliable and have a geat warrantee.

- Mobo : ASUS K8V SE Deluxe ( i chose this one because .... i dont know but i like it because its ASUS [a brand recommended in your guide], new and pretty good i think, also because its compatible wiht the cpu im getting)
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1513

good choice I have built computers with both the K8V and the K8v SE.

- CPU : AMD Athlon 64 3400 ( pretty good cpu recommended in coylter's list in a sticky post) http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1453

Another good choice (cheers to coylters sticky post)

- Case : Antec PFII Series 1040BII 400W PSU. (i want to know if the asus k8v deluxe fits in this case because i like the case and ANTEC is also recommended in coylters guide in his sticky post)
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1241#

Yet another great choice! Remember you can check out the Antec site to see what they have.. Sometimes its cheaper to buy from thier online store.

- Ram : 1 stick 512mb DDR PC3200 Kingston Hyper x ( i want to know if this is compatible with the asus k8v )
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1250

- CD/DVD drive : ? i dont know which to choose :S (i would like you to recommend me a fast one that can burn cds and dvds)

Plextor and Lite-On make reliable ROM drives in all price ranges

- sound card : ? i know nothing about this cards.

By far for gamers Creative makes the Audigy2 series that sound great, but your board will have sound on it..

- video cards: maybe ill get the ati 9800 pro 128mb after i build my pc. (maybe) i would also like a recommendation in this ( i like ati more than nvidia XD ) <--- forget it, im buying hti card with everything else... ill get the radeon 9800 pro 128mb [url]http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1215">http://u sa.asus.com/products/mb/socket754/k8vse-d/overview.htm[/ur l] <-- This second link takes you to the asus web pag for the asus k8v se where you can see a list of all the ddr 400 ram sticks they have tested on the mobo ( i dont understand the list =S. i see a few kingston but i dont know if any of those is the one i posted here. i would like you to tell me whether this ram is ok or if this kingston wont work with it)

All you have to do is ask the vendor (who you are buying it from) what chipset it is, and then match it up with what the manufacturer recommends. These boards are really RAM picky so make sure your getting the right chipset.

- CD/DVD drive : ? i dont know which to choose :S (i would like you to recommend me a fast one that can burn cds and dvds)

Plextor and Lite-On make reliable ROM drives in all price ranges

For the same amout you can pick up newer ATI cards x800 series, but dont ignore the Geforce 6800GT it can overclock to the same speeds as a 6800ultra very easily and stable.

- speakers : i will get creative 5.1 surround speakers.
http://www.pcdirectsource.com/Item.cfm?ID=1063

make sure the connectors are compatible with your sound outputs on the soundcard or the motherboard..

- monitor : i have one here in my house without use. ( i will use that one)

- mouse and keyboard: i will get a really good wireless microsoft that i like very much.

- ???? i dont know if i need something else for the gaming pc i ll like to build =P

well there is always a joystick ( try the Microsoft force feedback 2.0 if you can find it) ,and dont forget case modding, you can get whacky and wierd, but remember to wear eye protection, and always be safe with electric things.

That is all for now...

Thanks for the answer.

I have one question: Should i get an Audigy 2 ZS Platinum , the Audigy ES , or should i stay with the sound of my motherboard?is the sound in the mobo a good sound in performance?

I will see if the antec website has cheaper prices.

I cannot comunicate with the ownerr of the store im getting the mobo because i do not live in USA so im buying the things via internet. You said u have builted pc with the k8v se, so i wanted you to tell me what ram have you used in it ( brand and model) because i dont know if the rams from wich i will choose are compatible.

There is something i do not understand either :S : how do i know if the conectors of the speakers im getting are compatible with the outputs of the motherboard?

Im still :S i havent seen any ati from the x800 series for the same price (or a little bit more) the radeon 9800 128mb is 225$.

Something else what is overcloking and whats is the diference between something overclocked and something fresh from the box?

The mobo suports 3 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 3GB un-buffered ECC and non-ECC PC3200/PC2700 / PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory. Is one of those type of ram the one the kingston ddr400 pc3200 uses? is this ram stick compatible?

I found a kingston 512mb that is compatible with the mobo. i know every kingston is good but i want the hyper x kingston :D .... i want only the best for my pc (except for the monitor because im using an old compaq 15inch i have in here, that is because i dont want to buy a non flat pannel and the flat pannels lcds are too expensive, and my budget doesnt cover that, i ll get a good monitor in a year meanwhile ill stick with the small compaq toy :P)
