Subject: Should the moderators use Spam Traps?

I am proposing that the moderators of this site work harder to ban members of the Community. Everyone knows that the moderators' sole purpose on these forums is to ban users, so they should devise more efficient ways of catching and banning people. One such method would be to create "spam traps."

Moderators could create alternate accounts, then make blatant spam threads using these alternate accounts. The thread would have to be extremely offensive or attention-getting in some sort of way that will make it easy to attract posts. Then, after a set amount of time or posts, the thread is locked and all users in the thread are banned. This would be a more efficient means of mass-banning users, rather than searching the forums for individual users in random threads.

Their purpose isn't to ban people. Their purpose is to enforce the rules of the community because people choose not to follow rules.

The idea won't work because then the mods will be breaking the rules of their own and that just isn't acceptable. =D You'll get a better explanation later by someone else. =)

NO no no no no and no
That is a bad idea... baiting kids into something like that
Imagine being a new user and typing your first post into a thread that will get you banned automatically.. their first impression will be "OMFG, this site sucks." It is a bad idea, sorry

Go Chiefs

No.

1) Mods are too busy as is. They don't have time to create multiple accounts and blah blah blah.

2) Entrapment is totally lame. I asked her if she was a cop and she said no but she totally was. -blam!-.

2) Entrapment is totally lame. I asked her if she was a cop and she said no but she totally was. -blam!-.

1) Would it not be quicker to bait individuals into posting into a thread upon which you banned many of them? In actuality I'd almost be willing to bet it would save mods time in the future and create a reputation of "Should I really post in this thread, a moderator could be watching me". Basically, you set up a precedent that requires individuals to consider their posts and the quality of them and what they truly add to a discussion and ultimately whether or not it's appropriate.

2) Entrapment is used by police forces because in essence it helps prevent crimes and acts as a deterrent while still capturing those who would be committing them.

1)No, it wouldn't. Just as mods can create second accounts so can members. Besides, idiocy breeds idiocy. The mods must represent the best of this site, whether on their primary account or another. It's their non-paying, non-thankful, totally suck ass job.

2) I was being facetious.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

I am completely opposed to this idea. And that is rather rare. I would just like to correct you on your first paragraph.

I am proposing that the moderators of this site work harder to ban members of the Community. Everyone knows that the moderators' sole purpose on these forums is to ban users, so they should devise more efficient ways of catching and banning people. One such method would be to create "spam traps."

Moderators are here because they enjoy the community, and they were asked if they would like to moderate the forums. There is no sole purpose. They enjoy to post. They enjoy to chat. They enjoy to get in debates. There is no sole purpose, for anyone on this site. If you believe that the sole purpose of the moderators is to ban users, well, I'm sorry; you're completely mistaken. They are people just like you and myself, they just have a few extra gadgets and trinkets. Now, for the second paragraph.
The big problem, is that alternate accounts are shamed upon. Sure, many users have them, hell, I used to have them; and still do have one that most know as 'Galoopagoop'. But the fact is, it is frowned upon. Mainly since most are to escape bans.

The other bit, about them posting "extremely offensive or attention getting" thread, would be wrong in so many ways. One, the moderators are here to help the community, not to worsen it. Two, the moderators would, in a perfect world, have to ban themselves since they to disobeyed the rules by posting such a thread.

The set time limit. This is just a flat out no from me. Threads develop from spam to conversations. Even if this idea were implemented, you would only ban about ten people each thread. Which isn't very good for having something against the rules.

Basically, your idea is good, but not practical; at least, to me. If the mods want to go on a banning spree, they could ban ten times more people by just going into the Halo 3 Forum. I admit, there are pros to this idea, as with any idea. Personally though, I just don't see this being a good thing. Sure, it would stop spammers, but it would also hurt the community in a way that I cannot describe in words.

That's my opinion anyway.

Edit: Coffey, your psychic.

The mods aren't supposed to goad people into breaking the rules.

By the way, the moderator's sole purpose is not to ban people. Their purpose is to keep things friendly, give help to those in need, and make sure everything on the forums continues to run smoothly.

Banning is part of it, but not all of it. It really grinds my gears when people villainize them like this.

Horrible idea.

1. Do you understand the magnitude of the hypocrisy you're suggesting?
2. It's the complete opposite of the idea of moderators.
3. It's immoral.
4. The moderators' purpose isn't to just ban people.
5. No!

Who was it that had the idea of a moderator posting a thread saying up front that if you replied, you'd be banned? I like that idea the best.

edit:
Example: evilcam posts a thread, Title: Don't reply to this thread. Body: If you post anything in this thread, you will be banned for three days. Seriously.
