Best. Mod. Ever.

I know we have the ‘Big Idea’ and ‘Forum Changes’ threads but I’m making one since I think this idea is pretty much perfect, which seems too good to be true, hence I’ll need a few harsh words if any can be justified. I’m also pretty sure this hasn’t been brought up. Certainly the topic has but this specific idea is one I can’t recall being mentioned before.
It’s a very simple and potentially just as effective feature to cut down on misconduct on the forums. It’s a warning system.
Rather than having to keep a mental note, or straight out ban somebody, moderators can simply ‘Warn’ a member of their conduct and this will add either ten, twenty or thirty (example figures) percent to the member’s ‘Warning Bar’.
An example from Hitman Forum.
Each member would have their own bar in their profile that only they and mods can see (to cut out discrimination). If several moderators give them slight warning of twenty percent for being a jerk and it eventually reaches 100%, then the member has a seven day blacklist automatically dispensed by the great Banhammer.
By having a visual and real-time display of how close/far people are to getting banned, it makes the threat of doing so more real to them, hopefully reducing spam.
Here’s a Q and A just to present this with a little more clarity and cut through the more predictable questions:

Q & A
Would this remove a moderator’s ability to straight out blacklist?
No, I think that’s a necessary component of their function.

How do you lower your percentage?
Every X period of time it will lower by Y percent. For example, every week, 10% is automatically taken from people’s warn bars. Just behave yourself and someone with 30% will be back to normal in three weeks.

Is this like a Karma system?
Yes and no.
Yes, in that it involves some kind of rating.
No, in that it is not meant for praise or to commend members. It’s simply a way of deterring people from breaking rules and relieving some weight from the moderator’s jobs.

Can normal members give warnings?
No, otherwise we would introduce a separate problem of people trying to get others blacklisted when they simply disagree with them etc.

Can we all see each other’s Warn Bars?
No. As I said, I don’t want this to be a point of either pride or discrimination. A member can see their own percentage and forum moderators too.

The moderators can already send warnings that affect both your trust rating (and thus your forum title) as well as your permanent moderation history (that they can already see). You 'll know you've been warned because you'll get a PM from the Disembodied Soul with the warning message.

I'm not a fan of those types of boards. If the insanely awesome forum software Bungie's forums use wasn't 4 billion dollars for a license, I would grab it in a heartbeat.

(Of course, yes, they're highly modified by the web team, but still... That's partly why I would love them. Ultimate customization.)

Sorry, a bit off topic, but do Mods send a warning as a PM?

I have had a three day ban before, and I know what that message looks like, but in what form does a warning message come?

Just wondering.

Are we supposed to get a PM if we get banned too? I'm asking because a while ago(you can probably see the exact date) I was banned on here without notification.
If Achronos answers, I know you guys don't have to tell us about that kinda thing, but I was just wondering if we're supposed to get a PM for being banned.
Thanks!

You get a message when you attempt to post, with the date/time and reason for ban, and the moderator responsible for banning you.

I want to know how you are notified for warnings.

For warnings you get a PM saying something along these lines:

Sent to me by: Disembodied Soul
You have been sent a warning from [ninja's name here]. This warning's text is below:

A Bungie.net Forum Moderator has warned you for violating the code of conduct and/or rules of the forum in the thread below. Further violations will likely result in a ban.

http://www.bungie.net/Forums/[forum thread you got warned in here]

Don't contribute to the flaming. <<--[reason here]

Basically, assuming they haven't changed the format.

I remembered getting the little message when I tried to post, but I thought we were supposed to get a PM too.

Do certain bans result in a greater loss of trust?

Like does a ban based on you posting on spam take less trust than a ban based on asking for Recon?

Just wondering.

I agree with Zag that the Ideal Science Hawtness setup is totally awesome and I hate phpBB forums too, but this idea would take up approximately 90x20 pixels and could do a great deal of good.
I think people are missing the more subversive point of this, which is to prevent spam in the first place. If someone can see they've got 60%, then they're far less likely to do anything out of order.
The second of the main points is to relieve the moderators of some pressure; if all they have to do is warn someone for a single event, then they can rely upon the system to admonish people appropriately. We know how many spammers get past the filter and how stretched many of the moderators can be.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

We already have warnings, and I'd prefer to ban based on warnings be left alone. I can use my own judgment when applying punishment, where a quantified system which displays data sets would negate a portion of that.

I think its best if the mods use their own judgment. Though your idea has merits, and it would likely be very helpful to encourage users to delete that offensive message rather than post it if they knew it was their last one. However, what about the prior ones, where they think they can get away with a few warnings? I think it would be better if they were worried about being banned on their first offense, rather than down the line.

To whomever asked; warnings are sent via the Disembodied Soul and the PM system. If you get a PM from The Soul, its probably a warning (though its not always a warning, such as the Friends and Family Beta invites). The moderator will write a message, and the Soul will send it for them. That way, the system can track warnings as well as bans.

Yeah but most of the time it'll be the mod is not on so the person gets away with or the mod bans for a mall offense.
