definitely seems like they're using A LOT of bumpmapping. ya, most stuff looks great, but some of it is really obvious like whenvever they show like the bumps on a sheet of metal and stuff it looks obviously 2D. i hope they can fix stuff like this up and make it look better cuz i feel that might take away from the gameplay.

It wont, Halo 2 will rock, I know it, I know you know it, and i know everyone else knows it (some are just in denial cause they cant get it) So it'll all be chill.

I think you might be thikning that because in the discovery channel thing(if this is where the thread came from) they tell you to LOOK at the differences. If you were playing you wouldnt notice this as much. Plus, bungie now has like an unlimited budget and deadline so they would do the best they could for everything

2-D? have you seen any of the videos? they are most definantly in 3-D and everything looks great. and you souldnt worry cause any minor graphic problems will be polished up before release so just sit back relax and wait for nov 9th, everything wil be ok

I haven't seen anything of Halo 2 that looks 2-D. The bump-mapping effects look awesome in my opinion. Perhaps you could show us a screenshot of what you are talking about.

I don't get why we even doubt Bungie at all like Halo is THE greatest game of all time and until Halo 2 comes out still is. Don't worry sit back, relax, play Halo uintil Halo 2 comes out and than bask in its glory and than punch yourself in the face for doubting bump mapping.

He's talking about hte sufaces of things. And altough bump-mapping is wonderfull, when you get close to things, they don't seem that great at all. But all games have this, bump mapping or not. Another thing: nobody's going to stand next to a wall for ten hours to see if the graphics are good.
Another thing: most of the things we have seen so far is all multi player. And may i remind you that the graphics in MP have been downgraded to prevent lag.

what do you mean? I do thatsometimes in halo in assault to the control room in those halways, I look at the great detail and design that is in those blue parts of the wall.

errr... 3D isn't stand out, it's shadow. Everything that doesn't have a shadow is not 3D.

And you can have a shadow at night.
The only place you can't have a shadow is in total blackness. i.e. A black hole.

Everybody with doubts:
Go play two betrayals (i think its this one, but its the one where you go around and use your shields to blow up those energy things). At the last generator thing it shows a cutscene, if you look at the ground it is clearly bump-mapped. Anyway the lighting that the generator casts on the ground looks incredible. When I saw it in the cutscene I thought that the ground looked close to CG and thought that the chiefs low polygon model looked crappy next to it.
Seriously though, the little bump-mapping you can find looks incredible.

The walls in the maw in the final run are bump-mapped, the pumas lights light it up really nice.

Bump mapping is just for detail purposes, not for gameplay (in the sense of affecting your interaction with the bump-mapped object; it does of course make the game run more quickly). There will be 3D objects obviously--the ones that need to be 3D, such as ghosts, trees, marines, rocks, etc.

Things that don't have to be 3D won't be--bump mapping is all about fooling your eyes. And as long as those illusions don't make any real 3 dimensional impact in terms of your interaction with the object as a whole, then what does it matter? Your eyes see what they see, and if they think it's 3D, than for all practical purposes, it is.

Bungie knows better than you (or I) do. Trust them on this one.
