The one and only.

I have been having this weird problem when trying to play Halo CE and its really annoying me. Whenever i start it up it will load up like normal and then the menu doesnt appear but i can hear the music from the main menu and i also can here the sounds that it plays when you select different options.

I am thinking it has something to do with the new Nvidia drivers i got but im not sure. My graphics card is a Nvidia Geforce 8500 and i am running on a Pentium D dual core
processor with 1 gig of memory. I also have vista on my computer but its just started to have this wierd error so I dont think its vista. Nvidia says i have the latest drivers at their website which is forceware 169.25.

I can play Halo PC fine but when i stop playing it says a display driver stopped working but successfully recovered. When i played online it had some framerate drops whenever i looked out into the main parts of the levels so i tested it on lan and that problem stopped occuring so i am assuming its lag or has something to do with that framerate driver not responding. If anyone knows how to fix this I would gladly appreciate your help.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

1) Disable anti-aliasing in the NVIDIA Control Panel
2) Turn off decals in Halo video options

Hope it helps.

Online with other people battling out in the open will of course make the framerate drop. When you played offline on LAN and I'm assuming alone you'll obviously get the best framerate because the graphics cards won't have to render all the effects from multiple weapons firing, grenades exploding, Spartans running amok, etc.

BTW I've found gaming in general is faster on XP so I suggest you upgrade from Vista back to XP to get major a performance boost. Or turn off decals and shadows.

Thanks for the help guys. Sadly enough though i cant turn of the decals or tone down the shadows because i cant get into the main menu. Its only Halo PC that I can get into the main menu in but thats not really what i want to play.

When i start up Halo CE it just shows the halo ring thats in the beginning and when it starts to play the music the image starts to flash into black and back to the ring over and over again. Antianalising or whatever is turned of in my Nvidia control panel. I cant really upgrade back to XP either because my computer came preinstalled with vista and then i would have to reinstall all of the games i have on to XP which would take forever.

I am guessing that the preformance drop that i mentioned in my original post was lag becuase i had that problem right in the beginning of a CTF round on sidewinder and i was near rockets and looked out and it got laggy even though no one has killed or even fired at eachother yet.

Sorry, guess I was dead wrong on that one. My only experience with not being able to see the menus was due to anti-aliasing in my case. Wish I could help.... If it's any consolation, I might be going back to XP, and I have dozens of games to re-install.

well thanks for your suggestions anyways. I still probably wont be going back to XP becuase I would have to re-download all this crap I have for gmod and all these other games I have on steam and I just dont feel like doing that. I am probably gonna get another gig of memory so then my computer will meet minimum system requirements to play crysis. Plus everything will load faster and stuff. I guess I will just have to deal with playing regular Halo only but then I cant play the CMT campaign with all the cool multiplayer maps :(

It does say when i load the game to turn of the option but the wierd thing is it says the same thing when i load up the normal version but it works.

You need to turn off or set to application controlled the anti-aliasing setting in your video driver. be sure you set it for haloce.exe and not just Halo. Halo Custom Edition (CE) has different video routines that use fast shaders that the Halo PC retail version does not. That is why Halo PC works when Halo CE doesn't.

Most Vista video drivers now have the anti-aliasing set to ON as default.
