512mb will run halo and most games very well. However, the extra security with 1024 megs is nice, I like it at least. The big question is what type of ram do you have? DDR, SDRAM, and what speed, 400MHz, 300MHz, 533MHz....?

If you bought your system within the last 2-3 years, it's probably good to go

Why'd you need the mard to tell you more ram is better than less? isn't it obvious? 512 = enough. 1024 = t3h pwn. All depends on how much you wanna spend. DDR-400 (3200) ram is probbaly what you'll want.

actualy, it truly doesn't matter. halo requires 128MB, but getting more ram wont make it run better. it'll still only take up 128 mb. you can just do other stuff at the same time with more ram.

Heyyo,

DOH! sry, I was playing RTCW-ET with bobots like, half the day, so I diddn't troll the forums after school, so I answer last. :p

but yeah, 512MB's enough for halo, but for UT2k4, Trives: Vengeance, Far Cry, and Half Life 2 (with higher system settings) you'll want that 2nd stick. of 512MB to make 1GB.

Now, for ram, what kind you got in there? I'm guessing it's DDR200 at least, so I suggest that if you try to get another stick of ram, get that type again to prevent any kindof compatibility errors. Most new sticks of DDR400 ram you can mix safely. Just remember, RAM downclocks its speed n' stuff to the weakest ramchip. So if you have a PC2100 stick, and a PC3200 stick, they'll both act like PC2100's. Now, there can be a price gap. PC2700 ram is sometimes more expensive than PC3200, so if the stick of PC3200 is cheaper, obviously buy a PC3200 for price and preformance (if you decide to ever get rid of that stick of PC2700..).

You can try and find the generic brands, usually the samsung brand is cheapest, but very dependable. Kingston's one of the best, but one of the most expensive ramchip creators out there.

Check this:
Samsung 512MB PC3200 184Pin RAM

Kingston 2x256MB (total 512MB RAM) PC3200 184PIN

See? but man, that kingston ram's faster... if I was rich I'd take it over samsung anyday, but oh well. :P

not really, no. as long as you get two sticks the same speed. same manufacturer is preferable but not vital.

hey mard do you think this ram would work and if so should i get 2 sticks and replace them both instead of only getting one because of the downclocking??
o and i just found out that my 512 right now is a 333mhz will a 400mhz one work???

Heyyo,

Well, that ram will work fine, sure, buying 2 new ones and getting rid of the old one would get you more preformance wise outta the ram, but that's only technical, you won't really feel the difference, maybe like 1-2 seconds less of loading times on bigger levels, that's it really...

So just buy the 2nd chip, no need to waste too much money on ram since it's pretty much the cheapest computer component, but it is still vital, speed differences aren't as monumental as say a videocard. ;)
