Dianna Agron is the epitome of perfection.

Quinntology.

If you don't want to read my little backround you can skip the first paragraph.

For those of you who do not know me, I've been lurking the B.net forums since mid '04. I've had a lot of different accounts, including Bosspilks, APurpleChicken, A Talking Bunny, Kasai Kaji, Kasai, and Return of Kasai. Yes, I know, I couldn't stick with a name. I haven't played anything but the Halo games and Marathon Durandal from Bungie. If you would ask me a question about the Halo universe, I would be able to answer it as I have also read all 5 novels. But that's not important.

I have a major concern about the community as a whole. Yes, even the 7th column. When I joined back in '04 I was only 12 years old. Yes, that was young, but I instantly got hooked on some of the topics listed under various forums and the group systems. What I'm concerned about is the level of maturity and the ability to make good topics. For instance, the newer members, even some of the ones dating back to '05 are, for whatever reason, more prone to spam and flaming. This has elevated into a huge problem, it's even creeping into our beloved Septagon. Take a look around, there are a lot of threads here about the member titles, just because these newer members cannot read simple stickies or look at the first page of threads.

As for the Flood, it is getting a tiny bit better, but not too much to make a difference. In fact, one of the groups I was in mentioned another group called the New Flood. Yes, the New Flood. I thought, what the heck, I might as well join the group to see what's going on. I was shocked at the amount of flaming and hate going on there. I saw there the more well known members of the Flood posting there, it wasn't pretty. There were threads containing hate posts about certain moderators, or any specific member. And they even have Master Forum Ninjas and Forum Ninjas. They didn't even moderate actually. The level of maturity is horrible in each, how many threads has Pezza made about it again?

Don't even get me started on the Halo 3 forum. I have probably gone in there 4 or 5 times since it first came out and find it impossible to do anything because of the major spam. I may not be able to provide any details on them there, but I can guarentee you it's a headache for ther Ninjas.

As for the Files forums, they're pretty bad as well. Recently there has been some sort of group war between two screenshot groups. I laugh because just about every other post has (SP) by it to indicate that that member belongs to one of the groups. Do you know what that means to other members of that group? Bump the thread so it stays up on the front page. This isn't even including the bumping made by the thread creators and the advertising going on in a lot of the posts.

And finally, the Septagon. The Septagon has always been the forum with more intellectual threads popping up, but even that is changing now. Sure there are members who still go here regularly and make better threads, but it's starting to decline. I'm sure the Ninjas can agree with me that the Septagon needs more moderating now then it did before.

I would just like to express my concerns about Bungie.net to hopefully get some of you to recognize that if we as a community don't do something fast, there won't be a communtity much longer. The Bungie Online team is doing all they can to make the site better and we are just throwing it back into their faces. There is too much spam, flaming, and just stupid threads in general. I mean come on, when you to a video game site to figure out how to ask a girl out that's pretty sad.

Sorry for my little rant there, but I think that people need to start posting and thinking smarter.

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

It seems that these types of threads pop up everytime one of them is pushed off the front page. Yes, the community is getting worse. All we can do, as a community, is try to guide the new members to the non-spamming ways of using these forums. Reporting also helps.

Yeah.
The forums have really degraded.

All very true. I am a newer member, but at least I use my brain. Some people just think that it's a chat room or that it's cool to be an idiot. The Ninja do a great job and all, but there are just too many of them (spammers, etc).

There wasn't nearly as many people a few years ago. Trust me, I was there.

While I admit, it was a bit better, it was also smaller. I've seen these kinds of threads, without fail, at least once a week and it's always the same. "The Forums are going downhill!" "We need better threads!" "I'm sick of immature kids posting on the internet!" It's easy to blame everyone else for the problems with the Forums, but unless you, and everyone else who cares, can be a good example and post intelligently, frequently, and with a bit of originality, people won't care what you say.

You can either do something to change it (and I don't mean make an extensive post complaining about it...which you've already done), or you can leave, as many members have.

I'm a serious dude, so what?

face it, Halo is big business now and people are learning about Bungie.net from it. Because of the sudden influx of new guys and a poor understanding of what Bungie is, we have this problem. Take for instance the people that use "leet speak" in their posts. Lukemz and Frankie and the moderators, none of them use that. The Bungie example is correct spelling, correct grammar, and intelligent speech.

The problem is that people don't know what it means to be 7th Column.

It's called exaggeration. There are constantly threads like this being made in this forum. We all can see what's going on, putting it into a thread, again , is unnecessary.

Dianna Agron is the epitome of perfection.

Personally, I try my best. I try to messege people when possible and remind them of a rule that they broke. Even though it sounds like it might not make a difference, it does. The person usually messeges me back and says, "Oh by bad, I didn't know that" and then they don't have any more problems. Doing this also encourages others to provide advice where needed. A simple private messege to someone can often make a difference.

Your tone however, is one of the reasons why the community is dying. You're a Mythic member right? Well, dispite how some people argue about it, your attitude and tone does affect other posters. They a Mythic member say stuff like this:
You can either do something to change it (and I don't mean make an extensive post complaining about it...which you've already done), or you can leave, as many members have.
And they think it is alright to respond in the same way to other people, therefore creating more problems.

Messaging people works. We all know it does. Saying in a thread, especially in this forum, will not cause people who don't send messages to send them.

  • 02.17.2008 1:13 PM PDT

I know other forums are bad but worrying about this and posting about it isn't going to help. Don't let the spammers be such a big deal to you. Just post in whatever forum you generally go in and when you see a post that's breaking a rule report it and don't reply to it. That little button is your best solution. =D

We now have a female moderator... The only reason we had nekkid pix of stosh is because he was the girliest of the bunch.

As for the community; It's been dying for ages. Then comes a time when it seems to be alright, and then it dies again.

In four years we'll still be complaining it dying, and yet, it will still be there. Is it pleasant?
No, but I just keep doing what I can, and that's the best I can do.

From the ashes

If you don't reply to the spam threads they won't survive, the moderators have said it also if I remember correctly. I know it has gotten worse sadly, and it was better when I joined with my first account.

I agree Halifax, it's also good to be nice( goes with being a good example) to others and show kindness. Even if their mean to you you have the power to either be nice to them still or don't post a response. Usually better to not respond though, since it's been said plenty of time by mods that they usually want a response and will goad you into one if they can. I'm just going to repeat what I mean. Don't respond to spam and be kind and respectful to one another.

Einstein
Do not worry about your difficulties in Mathematics. I can assure you mine are still greater.

I would have to agree with the declining of the Bungie community. I have been around over 5 years (had an account even before this one), and the community used to be a lot better than it is now.

Then again, more Halo's meant more members and that just created the likelihood of even more who had know idea what was going on or just simply didn't care.

This is the main reason I haven't posted for quite some time.

When seeing the mythic members I remember a large portion of them when I used to post, and the community seemed to be fairly decent then.
