Personally, I try my best. I try to messege people when possible and remind them of a rule that they broke. Even though it sounds like it might not make a difference, it does. The person usually messeges me back and says, "Oh by bad, I didn't know that" and then they don't have any more problems. Doing this also encourages others to provide advice where needed. A simple private messege to someone can often make a difference.

Your tone however, is one of the reasons why the community is dying. You're a Mythic member right? Well, dispite how some people argue about it, your attitude and tone does affect other posters. They a Mythic member say stuff like this:
You can either do something to change it (and I don't mean make an extensive post complaining about it...which you've already done), or you can leave, as many members have.
And they think it is alright to respond in the same way to other people, therefore creating more problems.

Wonderful, I'm glad you're trying to help. Regarding that little section you quoted, I wasn't telling you to leave, nor was I trying to offend...those are simply the two options open to someone who is upset at the way things are going. I've seen plenty of people leave (and subsequently come back) but I rarely see anyone doing anything to make it better. Perhaps it's because they go about it the same way you do, through PMs...however, I think the best thing anyone can do is just post intelligently. Of course, that doesn't mean every post in the Forum has to be serious. Smart humor is just as good.

Really, I think we both agree with each other on the state of the Forums and what needs to be done about it. The only reason I felt the need to post here was because the very idea behind these threads is just...well, silly. You won't change the Forums by making a thread that complains about it. You can only make a change by being the change yourself.

I hope that doesn't sound cheesy or cliche, but you said it yourself. "your attitude and tone does affect other posters." Your attitude, and the attitude of most of the people here seems to be one of despair and hopelessness. Me? I see this simply as it is. An internet Forum and nothing more. I will post what I want to post, and ignore (and report) those who want to ruin the experience for me.

Dianna Agron is the epitome of perfection.

Quinntology.

I suppose what I got confused on is when you used the word "you" numerous times, seeming like you were just talking about me in general. Sorry if I took it the wrong way.

Yes, in a way I am complaining, but I'm also trying to explain the...bad parts of Bungie.net. I'm trying to get people to recognize some of the problems and hopefully try to get some of those rule breakers to change their minds. In a way, I am complaining, but in another way I am explaining the status of the site.

I also agree that this is indeed an internet forum, and one may do what one wants. I just wish that people had the common courtesy to post intelligently. Call a dream if you want, but like a comfortable enviroment to talk about video games. Not a tense one that includes harsh threads and messeges degrading someone else.

Да?

Been going to hell for a while now, since the Halo 3 announcement trailer (I joined around then). But for every thousand morons that spam the forums, we get one good forumer that can make a conversation intelligent and worth having. But that's what comes with having a game as big as Halo 3 and we'll all just have to put up with "Can I has Reconz" until Bungie start to lose their fanbase (A long time basically).

  • 02.17.2008 1:47 PM PDT

Estne volumen in toga an solum tibi libet me videre?

Nothing suits me like a suit.

Nothing is true. Everything is permitted.

Well, by looking at the front page of this forum about an hour and a half ago, I can agree. With Halo 3 out, we, as in the community, are getting an Influx of new members. Now thats fine with me, but its just the way the newer members seem to behave. Most decide to flame, insult the Ninjas, flame and spam some more, and decide to blame Stosh for their behavior, after seeing that phrase once or twice.

Not all new members do this, some, I hear, actually use the forbidden in the Halo 3 Forum, I think its called 'their brains'. I hope that soon they can change their posting habits accordingly with the rules, but I'm not sure what we can to to really stop them. The ninjas can ban them all they want, and that will hopefully deter the bad behavior. But for the masses, it just creates the next Whaambulance on the 7th show.

One of the major problems I see, aside from the posting quality, is the fact that people use every forum there is for Halo 3 discussions. They can't miss the Halo 3 forum, but for the most part they don't realize that Bungie has made other games, and other forums are there. Some of them get the message after a while.

Another problem I've seen is the blatant disregard for the stickies. Hmm. Rules, order. I should totaly ignore these. 1 4m t3h 1337. I have no idea how we can make them anymore accessable and noticed than we already have. I made an earlier suggestion in another thread about making them read the rules for that particular forum before they can post there, but most people would just scroll down and click 'Enter'

The biggest problem I think we're all facing is the posting quality. I can't understand why a nice discussion can turn into a flame fest. Look at the Halo 3 Forum. Most threads that people disagree with, no, pointing out where they might be wrong and giving them their thoughts is for wimps. They have to flame them, insult their family, say 'In before lock' for whatever reasons tey see fit. The only thing I can see that will fix this is stricter rules and enforcement, but we can't enforce the rules more than we can when Pezz is online.

Those are my thoughts on the basic problems on the community, and one or two suggestions thrown in. For those of you who scroll to the bottom, here:

I agree

I say we just go with the five or so that have been created. Today. Then again, the group should probably be a Council, in some form or another.

So...just so I'm clear, this is a complaint about people being immature?

Welcome to the internet.

Was it this bad a few years ago? No, it wasn't.

Yes. It was. Just in less numbers. Welcome to the Internet Age, I suppose. More people are getting used to the internet, more people are using it, therefore more people are coming to Bungie.net, as well as the REST of the internet.

I've always wondered, what exactly was the "old Bungie.net." Or the "Old Flood."
Seriously. I joined this place when I was 11. I was probably pretty damn annoying back then. I grew up and learned the rules.
But along the way, I didn't complain about Bungie.net dying.
I've read threads like this last year. I don't think the immaturity will stop. But it's a site with 2 million+ members. What are you gonna do?

Let's see, we have less than 30 moderators for a site with 2 million people.
Not to mention that there are 12 forums.
Then there are 4 or 5 that are really active, then some with major spamming.

When you look at that, I think we're doing very well keeping track of people.

The group war is really stupid. (Zanzibar Vs. Flood, anyone?)
And there might be a way to shut it down.
But in reality, I don't have much to complain about. I have a report button, the mods on MSN. I should be fine.
My best advice, do your part to help clean it up if you really think it needs it. That's why we call it a community. And being part of a community doesn't involve just sitting there an complaining about it. That does nothing.
Go and help fix it.

This is the last semi-sanctuary for sane people. Well this and the Underground. But really, it's so bad that I probably report 10 or 20 (sometimes more like 50) posts for every time I post. And guess what, next day theres more crap on the forums.

But at least we do have the Report feature...its our only hope. (Just like Obi-Wan Kenobi)

There were a LOT less people back in 2004, but it has pretty much been the same. There has always been spam, and I haven't really noticed any increase in it. However, I don't visit the Halo 3 forum much :p

Dianna Agron is the epitome of perfection.

Quinntology.

I don't get it, I spend time trying to help out the communtity by summarizing the problem and all that comes out of it is a bunch of people telling me to stop complaining? How is that helping out? All I'm trying to do is raise awareness, and somewhow that is complaining. Point out one spot where I have the whiny tone of complaining. Please, I'm pretty sure I wrote an explanation on how each forum is going to hell.

So maybe instead of simply stating that I should stop complaining, maybe some of you could private messege someone next time they break the rules instead of saying "Banned," or just simply ignoring it and moving on.

When you look at that, I think we're doing very well keeping track of people.

Then why not submit a suggestion to get new moderators then? If only 4 or 5 of them who are active, what's the point in the other 35 of them? We are not doing a very good job of keeping track of people at all, sure the report button helps, but that would require multiple mods being on at the same time, which doesn't happen too often.

I am doing my part, I private messege and try to raise awarness. Once again, I am not just simply sitting around complaining. Please reread my post if that is what you think. I only see a handful of people out of this forum (And even a small amount in this forum) who offer help or point others in the right direction. Maybe instead of stop telling me to complain and do something, some of you should actually bother to do your part, instead of repeating what others have already said in the thread.

She meant that there were 4 or 5 forums that were really active, not that there were 4 or 5 mods who were really active. The mods are active enough, they just sorta do other things a lot, like have lives and whatnot.

Always.

Only to some of the newer members who don't care enough to read the rules, it seems.
I mean, I see the member titles as Incentives to not break rules. Some people see them as, "Hey, that guy has a blue bar, he must be cool and/or better then me!"

As more people come, the quality of any site is bound to degrade, due to spam and general stupidity. Sadly, all we can really do is report the spam.. and just hope for it to go away eventually. :P

EDIT: I know it wouldn't work, but, everytime you go to the Halo 3 forum (or any forum here, for that matter), there should just be a big, shiny box that says, "DO NOT REPLY TO SPAM."
Everytime there's a spam thread, it seems like people need to rush in and say, "B&, lol," or, "Lock!"

EDIT 2: Adding on to the last edit, here's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Here.
I mean, the guy posts a Rick Roll, and gets two pages of, "You're so gonna get banned, lolol."

The more members there are the worse the forums will seem. This is because you can't expect everyone to be nearly as awesome as say, me.

Also, we have threads like this all the time, we can't make the forums go "back to the good ole days" because those days were exactly the same as now...with less people.

reminds me of a proverb i'm a fan of: "Do not ask why the old days were better than these, because it is not wise to ask such questions."

the point being, every thing is improving and when the good things grow, the bad things just have to get more outrageous and annoying to be noticed. just because there are more idiots doesn't mean that the forum is going to die, because the only way that happens is if you and i and the rest of us good ones abandon it.

hell, i've been playing Bungie games since Marathon, I have actually played Pathways into Darkness, both Myth games, I tried Oni on a rental, but only now have I gotten really involved in the forums. So while there's a huge influx of r374rd5, there's a few old skoolers still showing up to class.
