It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

As sesqui said none of our opinions really matter. What it comes down to is Bungie's opinion, wether they really trust Mythic members themselves and not according to an automated system.

Taxes do nothing to affect the share of wealth, since taxes are only applied to income.

So that's not even a part of the conversation at all, so it's pointless talking about it....

"for a "best" moral to exist, there must exist the "best" moral base. If the base of morality varies from location to location, culture to culture...then there can't be an absolute moral..

there seems to be mounting evidence to support my claims that the member titles are darn near meaningless. this guy is legendary, has about half of a dozen pages of posts over the life of his account, and has made this post.

to those of you who have expectations based on member title, what do you think when you see a person with a snazzy title make such a post?

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

In my view, it’s not going to happen.

Firstly, why should Mythic Members get a custom avatar? They’re still just a regular member like the rest of us. Sure, they may have behaved over the years, but that by no means you should be rewarded more than you currently have been. If a b.net member violates the ToU or CoC, you are punished accordingly. So acting with the “mainstream” sort of speak doesn’t make you a good member, it just displays you follow the rules because you don't want to get blacklisted. It doesn't make you a better member than most others.

Moreover, copyright avatars would be a main issue. If you look at all the accounts that have a custom avatar, none of them are copyrighted, but of their own or Bungie’s. I doubt the moderators and B.net online team is going to take the time to approve every avatar when they’re busy enough with more important tasks. The last thing we need is this site getting into trouble for someone else stealing their work for an avatar.

Mythic Members have a title that indicates to the community they have been here a while and generally are good. That’s enough of an award for you. You don’t need a special colour or title bar because this place will look like a rainbow just like in 2003-2004. Achronos even said himself he’s never going to allow custom avatars.

Custom avatars are for members who actually contribute something to B.net, as in moderating the forums or creating themes. I think it should stay like that.

The whole Heroic, Legendary, Mythic thing is based around a trust rating, correct? Well, I had an idea: maybe Mythic members could have their own avatar. The reason we don't have custom avatars now are, quote (or something like this), "It would not be long until someone posted a picture of their own ass." Well, if Mythic members have so much trust, then why can't they be allowed a custom avatar? And of course, if the system is abused, a blacklisting is always possible.

Or, Mythic members submit a custom avatar into the system that a moderator checks every once in a while and ok's it. It's not like there would be an overload of avatars considering that there's only 200 Mythic members (and rules could be set to the avatars).

Post your thoughts, comments, and concerns.

my only question is, what exactly is it that a mythic member contributes that any other member doesnt?

The Frozen Minority; Bungie's real underground. The oldest members, the deepest controversy, walking infamy.

You've got titles. You don't need anything else.

You certainly will not be getting anything else at this point, either. The titles may yet disappear, themselves.

Feelings: Super-glad.
I'm just super-glad that the 'Elitist' (lol Elite, Alien in Halo, Bungie) titles are not causing people to phantamnsize about getting avatars.

NO WAIT

Mythic members should BE the avatars! We RULE!

That was a joke. We're still members, just mythic ones. Bad idea.

Aside the horrible joke the man makes a good point. Mythic members are still simply members. I remember a few years back they wouldn't consider any sort of option that would give people a higher status, they even removed the visable join date on your posts because of that.

Basically it wont happen.

  • 02.19.2008 9:42 AM PDT

I can understand not giving custom avatars to regular members, but why not mythics?

Most users who post inappropriate content join the site specifically to do so. They're all new members. No one is going to wait three years or whatever just to make their avatar something unsavoury.

What harm could it do? It's not like you're giving them mod powers or anything.

I think the status member thing is just a gentle and subtle positive nod to longer term behaved members and thats it. Anything putting anyone above another member is sure to end in a horrible yukky mess.

Custom avatars are on a LOT of forums, but Bungie gets a ton of traffic and people would upload nasty pictures.

However, Mythic members are low in number (only 200 or so) and they have proven that they are trustworthy enough too get something special such as a "Custom Avatar". They already have a nice blue bar, I don't think a "custom avatar" is going too be that big of a deal. I highly doubt they would upload something innapropriate (that would be idiotic). They have earned Bungie's trust, so they ought too get it.

This way regular members are encouraged too not get black listed, and too not do anything dumb at all.

nice post, naku. i think that we could get into an interesting discussion about trust and how it relates to member titles, but i will not get into that here.

as far as i can see, no matter what the rating system is called and no matter what titles are used, the member titles do not indicate much in terms of value, any value, including trust. we can swap out the bnet titles with '*', '* *', '* * *', etc., and nothing would change. if a person were to earn one star, two stars, three stars, or how ever many stars, it just indicates that he has met some arbitrarily selected criterion. i do not know what they use at mlg, but i suspect that it would be the same case with their titles.

since some titles are seen as more important that others (heroic is better than member, legendary is better than heroic, and so on) by members, value becomes an issue. it seems that many members think that the titles indicate some sort of value. the folks at bungie have spoken of 'trust', but i find that an odd word to use in this context. as far as i am aware, earning these titles does not involve members being trusted more in any meaningful sense. with what are they entrusted? the titles do not appear to have anything to do trust, they just involve labels used to identify members who have been selected to get a few perks.

Isn't that how the Halo 3 rank system works as well? It isn't really a "perk" (every forum on the internet practically has this "feature). The avatar thing isn't really all that special. Its not a "uber reward" or something like that. Its (IMO) more like you proved you won't upload a picture of you own ass by not getting black listed for like 4 years or something like that, so you probably won't be stupid and try too upload a picture of your ass. And yes the titles have NOTHING to do with post quality.

But if you make high quality posts, and haven't proven yourself to be trustworthy (by being blacklisted, etc) who is too say you won't upload a high quality picture of your own ass?

Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Why give them additional bonuses when they can already get away with blatant spamming...

Seems to me like they don't deserve anything else.

Your generalizing a bit there, not all of the Mythics in thats thread went insane. But I agree that it was a bit stupid.

Personally I don't think we need extra stuff but I wouldn't say no.

What really got me angry about that thread is moderators told them to stop several times but they continued spamming and in the end no punishment was given.

Yeah, but Achronos has banned quite a few of the guys who were doing all that crap. A waste of their Mythic title, some of them have been here for 5+ years. Hopefully they won't do it anymore

only problem is, you cant even say anything at all that goes against common thinking on this site because someone reports you right off and BOOM you arent trusted enough anymore to have any title. i was heroic once, posted a topic that asked a simple question, then when all the haters came and blurted out their nonsence i just voided their posts.... got reported because they didnt like that i didnt care about their hatist talk and got my title taken away... its totally not fair.

A moderator has too blacklist you, reports don't matter at all.

Also, keep in mind that the titles don't really matter. They are solely there too stop people from acting dumb and thinking that a blacklist won't effect them for longer then the actual period of the black list.

Achronos' statement on that situation

Just because members have "Mythic" beside their name, doesn't mean they still can't get blacklisted or warned.

To I can't add X's to my name to make it logical: Of course I was generalizing a lot. I by no means believe that all Mythic Members act any where near as bad, and I know that many like yourself cause only good things to be said about the title.

I was, however, disappointed in those specific members' actions, as well as the moderators lack there of.

Duardo: Thanks for that link. I'm glad to hear that the situation was resolved as it should have been. Same thing about you that I said to FEAR and whatnot. : ]
