Subject: Circumventions of the inactivity group deletion system

As you all know, if a group gets below a certain threshold of activity, for example having less than three members, it is automatically deleted. This exists to encourage group founders to create groups that are appealing to fellow members and likely to stay active.

It has recently been brought to my attention that there are several groups out there that are staying over the threshold with only the "alt" accounts of the founder as members. This is clearly in disregard for the integrity of bungie.net's rules and the spirit of the seventh column, especially since alt accounts are pretty much frowned upon anyway. This kind of behaviour demonstrates a lack of respect for what the seventh column is for. Such groups are nothing but mere vanity projects to boost the ego of the creator.

links removed for the sake of it

These are just examples of a wider phenomenon. This kind of activity should not be tolerated.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

The vanity is alarming. But I agree- the feature is there for a reason. The last thing we need are extra groups.

That's blatant abuse of the feature, I'm afraid. The probation period is there for a reason. One person in a group isn't a group at all.

Exactly.

1. any collection or assemblage of persons or things; cluster; aggregation: a group of protesters; a remarkable group of paintings.

The group might come in handy one day, right? I mean, you can't tell when you might need a group that was made on Bungie Day, but in this case we're definitely prepared in case that day ever does come.

But he should make the group when it's needed. Who knows what detrimental effects group clogs might cause?

Furthermore that Bungie Day group was created on 7/7. It had its chance to do something and threw that chance away. Now nobody can make a group with that name for any future Bungie Days, since the name is taken by an inactive group.

If only someone made us an FAQ explaining these dangers...

  • 02.17.2008 5:11 PM PDT

I don't understand why they are abandoned but have 3 other alts in them. =/ It kind of takes away the point. But I'm sure he had plans for them but had his plans change. And can you find any other examples then that one user? It kind of seems you are just nagging on him.

They could title it, "Constipation and You."

Clogs, you know...

Well, he's apparently working on a bunch of threads/topics right now for Bungie day in 5 months or so.

If he was doing something destructive with his actions, then I'd be worried. I don't see any signs of CG doing anything destructive. I've seen him do nothing but help since the day he got here. It's a bit sad how someone trying to improve the community gets harassed as if it's destructive to the community.

Guys I don't think these are CG's alts.

I think they're Zag's.

Agreed.

As for these "attacks" on Cg, please stop. Contact me, another mod, or hell, even Achronos if needed, but try to keep it away from the public forums.

I think it's drastically less destructive that Reiginko and sometimes yourself going into threads and merely posting...
"SS_Zag1"
or
"<Other username>".

That's spam. I could be wrong, but from what I can tell, Achronos' stand-point on Alternate Accounts is that if they're not breaking rules, they're fine. If CG is keeping groups open with some alts and has plans in the near-to-distant future to use them, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. The guy is obviously trying to help, and a few people just feel the endless need to bash him.

And Menace, if I had enough time to make alts and do what CG does, I'd be out of a job. :P

JAF, we're not "attacking" him. I am sure many other groups are like this; these are just the ones that were brought to my attention. This is a real problem for the community and I think it is important for people to generally know that this is not acceptable behaviour. If a new member saw that CG, an apparently respected member of these forums, was doing this, they might get the idea that it is appropriate and even welcomed.

EDIT: Zag, the "<username>" thing is not spam. It is a way to highlight people who are being idiots. It is highly effective.

Halo3Planet, the place for all things Halo 3..

Need help finding skulls, make sure to go here.

It is against the rules, and I think the groups should be deleted, and the alts blacklisted. However, I do not think this thread was the proper medium to get this done. A PM to Achronos would have worked much better.

  • 02.17.2008 5:20 PM PDT

You say tomato; I say potato.

Hooray for the rules n' stuff. I like the rules. No! It is not enough to like the rules; we must love them tenderly and passionately. Our very existence is to please the rules. I would lay my life down for the rules. I would take a bullet for the rules. The rules protect me and love me, so I must love the rules. Here is a little song I wrote to my lover, the rules:

I love the rules...
My emotion pools...
This very desire...
The rules do require...
Don't break the rules...
The rules'll break you first...
The heated gun cools...
The rules eases it's fist...

We <3 you, rules! protect us one more day!

I think that by making this a public topic, we have opened awareness. Reiginko makes a great point- it's not so much the damage caused by a mere 4 or 5 groups, but the fact that people might think this behavior to be acceptable. Thus, by making this a thread in the forum, there will be no misunderstanding.

He's right. We are arguing about the importance of making groups just to keep them alive, discussing the facts of the matter, and naming names to no end. This has caused a disturbance, and the community has reacted thusly. We should prevent these actions from happening again by taking a stand against groups that are formed with little to no purpose.

Things may have changed since i posted here regularly, but a blacklist to an account doesnt affect anything to do with groups, right?

Actually, it's an in joke. Spam generally equates to stupid, pointless annoying messages. Those posts make perfect sense to the people they're aimed at. Just because you don't understand the content doesn't make them stupid or pointless.

I could be wrong, but from what I can tell, Achronos' stand-point on Alternate Accounts is that if they're not breaking rules, they're fine.
Actually, the general rule on alternate accounts is "don't do it." and more importantly "Don't kick up drama over alts", so i'm not even going to touch that issue.

The guy is obviously trying to help
He's not really... His FAQs are nothing short of pure raving idiocy. For example, if posted an FAQ on the difficulties of handling the daylight savings time, i'd probably end up warned/banned for posting a hilarously obvious troll. But because he does it, it's help. His FAQs serve one purpose, and one purpose alone. I'll leave you to mull over what that purpose is.

Not that I know of, which is why the groups should be deleted, too.

I didn't even know of these groups before now, except for maybe one of them. Discussion is welcome, but blatantly calling people out isn't.
