Subject: Circumventions of the inactivity group deletion system

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

It is against the rules, and I think the groups should be deleted, and the alts blacklisted.

Things may have changed since i posted here regularly, but a blacklist to an account doesnt affect anything to do with groups, right?

Not that I know of, which is why the groups should be deleted, too.

You suggested a blacklist though...

I feel that if an alternate account is discovered, it should be blacklisted instantly, and any other measures to prevent another alternate account from being made should be taken.

I agree that these inactive groups should be deleted after one year of inactivity just like members. Also is it forbidden to have an alt account?

Actually, it's an in joke. Spam generally equates to stupid, pointless annoying messages. Those posts make perfect sense to the people they're aimed at. Just because you don't understand the content doesn't make them stupid or pointless.

I've certainly found your posts like that fit the criteria of being stupid, pointless, and annoying. I keep seeing them, they're annoying. They don't make any sense to anyone who isn't in on your joke, so they seem very stupid and pointless. Maybe not to you, but to anyone outside your little circle it's spam. I really don't think I'm the only one here who thinks it's extremely annoying and disruptive to read down the page.

Actually, the general rule on alternate accounts is "don't do it." and more importantly "Don't kick up drama over alts", so i'm not even going to touch that issue.

That does make this whole thread a little moot, doesn't it? I'm not saying anyone should be making alternate accounts. In my (near) 4 years of being here, I've entirely forgotten what the account creation for Windows Live ID looks like.

He's not really... His FAQs are nothing short of pure raving idiocy. For example, if posted an FAQ on the difficulties of handling the daylight savings time, i'd probably end up warned/banned for posting a hilarously obvious troll. But because he does it, it's help. His FAQs serve one purpose, and one purpose alone. I'll leave you to mull over what that purpose is.

That particular thread was pretty silly. His others? Extremely helpful. Just because you know your way about doesn't mean his threads and posts aren't incredibly helpful to those (many of those) that don't.

That's pretty much the nature of any in-joke. Don't act churlish just because you don't "get" it.

The thread is not just about alt accounts. It's about a particular use of them to get around the rules of the site. There is no reason to get around the inactivity deletion system; otherwise that system would not exist.

Really? Such as? I usually put some thought into my posts. I'm generally disappointed if they go over peoples' heads.

They don't make any sense to anyone who isn't in on your joke, so they seem very stupid and pointless.

I only post in jokes if the people who'll get it are active within the thread. I.E. you won't see any in the flood. Like i said, i actually put thought into my posts. Just because they're short doesn't mean theyre any less worthwhile.

Right, I may have a problem with this then. I have an alternative account by the name of x black kn1ght which I use for publishing screenshots and maps etc. I use this account for the forums and made both with pretty much the same name and actvar as I have nothing to hide. If there was away to link my gamertag to this account I would gladly do so?

I'm so glad he could put daylight savings into simple terms. It only took four paragraphs- doesn't get much more simple.

From the ashes

Not right that groups are making alt accounts to keep their group afloat. Sorry to be callous but if it's going to die let it die, you can always try again and learn from where you went wrong in your first attempt.

This guy gets it. The deletion system exists so that failed chapters don't stick around. It's the most effective quality control measure possible because it is up to individual users to decide what is a group worth joining.

When did this thread start becoming a "Hey, CrypticGuardian may or may not have alt accounts" thread? Isn't there a rule about specific user threads? I think so.

You are a master of rhetoric, sir.

Don't be racist against dwarves. They have a genetic condition that makes them no less of a person than other people. They may be little, but they have Big Hearts. =)

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

Well, I have no idea what this thread is about now, since it went widely off topic within like 5 posts. I'll add my 2 cents as to what I think the subject is though.

I think that maybe we should raise the probation from 3 members to like 5, although, I'm not sure if that would help much because the person could just create a few more alt accounts. Maybe sometime Achronos (or someone else with high enough power) could go through some of the groups that have only 3-5 members and see if they're active or not. If they aren't, then he could delete them.

Could work, but what if the guy is smart and keeps the other accounts very active? Also couldn't Bungie view the IP address and see if the accounts are originating from that one computer?

  • 02.17.2008 7:32 PM PDT

I actually typed this up about an hour ago, but never got around to posting it, so I'll do what's easy and use what I've already written.

I agree that measures should be taken to stop people from circumventing group auto-deletion. Using alternate accounts to prevent a group from being auto-deleted is abusing the system, in my opinion. However, since it seems like there really aren't any systems in place to block people from creating alternate accounts, I don't see how that problem could be solved.

In my view, the purpose of a chapter is for a group of people to get together and hold discussions outside of the public forums. The idea is to have a group of different people getting together and having good, decent conversations about things without having to put up with the "outside world", if you will, of the public forums.

I do not think that one person's alternate accounts should compose a chapter and be sufficient to keep that chapter safe from being auto-deleted. I think that it is an abuse of the chapter system because that chapter is not really contributing anything to either the people within it or the people without -- if it's all alternate accounts, then an occasional post would be the only thing required to keep the chapter alive indefinitely.

The auto-deletion system should take care of chapters that are in the position of not contributing anything to either internal or external members, but using alternate accounts to keep the chapter alive negates the deleting power of said auto-deletion system.

The only thing is that, to my knowledge, there aren't any safeguards in place to prevent people from using several WLID's to create alternate accounts, so I don't really see how this could be prevented.

EDIT (sorry, just waking up this morning) -- I'm sure that CG didn't mean any harm, but in my view, it is abusing the system.
