Does anyone know what I would have to do in high-school (im picking my courses in like 24 hours) to become a computer programmer to build Bungies next greatest hit? Of course it might be in entirely impossible if no-one knows.

I am a penguin. Every day I boogie on down to the water, and eat fish. Once, while fishing in the deepest depths, I saw great Cthulhu... And he said to me "Shine, to thine own self be true. They can't tell you what to do once you've gone guru." Also, I should tell you, "slide".

A friend of mine wants to be a programer; apparently (from what I know from him) that sort of thing is learned in college.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

I couldn't dig much up, but here is a bit of a thread from a few weeks ago. Read through it to fine what you need; the link starts at Achronos' post. His High School stuff is in the last paragraph, though, it isn't very much.

Link.

Edit: Also, I would probably recommend doing stuff with Graphic Design, then if possible take a Drafting and Architecture class; that way you can get a bit used to creating objects in a computer program. Also, you may want to read this.

Yup. ;-)

To the OP:
I've never heard of a High School offering programming as a class, but if your school does, take it. Otherwise you'll need to wait untill college to get any formal teaching in the programming field. Perhaps in the mean time you should download Linux and become familiar with that, since many (well, probably all) of it's programs are written using C/C+/C++, C#, or Pearl.

That joke is fantastically overused an old. Too many shirts have been purchased and worn that contain this joke, and now everyone gets it.

Its, "there are 10 types of people, those who can read binary and those who cant"

I dont have an urge to work for Bungie but I do feel like theyre missing out by not having me. Its true that I´m clueless when it comes to computers but I like to think that I´m compensating that in other areas.

Learn programming outside of school. Take classes at a local college or community college. High school courses are generally not very good when it comes to computers, and that includes the relevant AP courses.

I'm in the same situation. Ironically, I will be choosing classes tomorrow too. Also ironically, I want to be their generalist programmer. Huh...

Anyway, I suggest a lot of math classes. You will need the following in my opinion.

Trigonometry (AP)
Geometry
Physics (AP)
Calculus (AP)
Algebra
Algebra II
Computer Science (AP)

Then of course, choose all other easy classes. Don't mess up your GPA if you don't have to. AKA, if you haven't already, DON'T TAKE CHEMISTRY IF YOU HAVE A HARD TEACHER! I'm suffering those consequences now.

What grade are you in, I'm in 10th now.

Hello.

I don't think you need a qualification as such but just to know what your doing. I saw the ads for the jobs section and found the one for programming and thought "I would love to do that" and probably would have gone in for an interview if I wasn't 14 and lived in Australia.

Learn programming languages out of school, its the easiest way (Google C or C++ Tutorial, I think thats what Bungie was looking for). You can move at your own pace, there is no pressure and you can code what you like. Best learning in a stress free environment, it keeps your creativity flowing.

Hope you get there... before me! =D

Programming would help.

The only good thing high school ever did for me was getting me out of calculus and physics classes in college (AP courses). You don't learn near as much in high school as you would in college. Just find a college with a good program in computer science, move to Washington, and get some experience and you'll be set.

Of course you need qualifications, computing, graphic design, binary coding, Visual basic, and most importantly imagination.

You can start learning on your own if your High School doesn't have a proper or at least elementary programming/computer course. Just google for online tutorials, buy some books from Book-a-Million or Barnes & Nobles, and read hardcore. It takes time, practice, and a critical hit to the "works well with others" department, but you can do it. :)

You might want to think about learning C++ fluently as your primary goal. Then set short term and low key goals for you to achieve so you make progress towards learning C++ fluently. I'd start from bottoms up and not even touch a compiler or write a lick of code until you at least understand things. The best way I ever learned was by reading about a concept, trying to make it work in my code, and then looking at examples and reviewing my mistakes.

No. The joke is "There are 10 kinds of people, those that understand binary, and those that don't." It's funny because "10" is binary for "2" (base 2 system).

Take conputer science. It's fun and it's the firsts step to becomeing a programmer.

I've heard mixed advice on Computer aided drafting or design or other similar classes. They teach you to make 3d models so it might help with videogames, bus it's more for building and construction models. If you plan to be a 3d modeler of any kind (weapons designer, map designer, etc.), there are classes in college that are more...efficiant for learning how to do it.

If you like art, you should take some art classes and then Bungie could hire you as a concept artist, texture artist, etc. If you like writing stories, take english or writing classes and they could use you as a storyboard artist or writer. If you like internet forums and like being helpfull, you might eventually become a ninja. It's not a paying job at bungie, but they'll notice and respect you, which can't hurt in a job application.

If you do take computer science, you could iether be a programmer for bungie, or, if you go more towards web design programming, you could be a programmer on the web team and help manage Bungie.net.

That's the beauty of the videogame industry, tons of talanted people with a larg variety of skills each contributing their part to a final finished awsome product that makes millions of dollars in profit and millions of people play.

Heck, you could just become a proffesional waiter and work for Bungie as a snack goffer.

I recommend Art and design, and if you are further along in highschool in college you should look toward structural engineering. A couple of bungie employees reccomend taking this college class. Im sure there are many other classes you could take but it all depends on what your interested in working with at bungie studios
