I posted this topic over at the Underground, but the place seems rather dead; hopefully I'll get more of a response here.

First and foremost, I apologize as I'm sure at some point in the forum history this topic has been discussed. Unfortunately, since my time on the Bungie forums, I am yet to have seen any threads regarding the "Guardians." So here 'goes.

While I'm sure the Guardians need no introduction or explanation to most, I'll give a quick run-down just in the rare case of an uninformed reader. The Guardians -- based on my knowledge -- only make an appearance in Halo:CE multiplayer games. Instead of the usual, "Big L was killed by Wheezy" (or what have you), occasionally a player will be killed by the “Guardians”, resulting in a "Pirate was killed by The Guardians." In my experience, this happens most frequently when two players seemingly kill each other at the same time.

So, the question is, or questions rather, does anyone know exactly why this happens? And secondly, why did Bungie choose to use the 'Guardians'? Is there any significance?

Since I have heard an answer to this question, it has not happened to me, so I haven't been able to check on it. What I've heard, however is what you were saying. Basically, when someone kills someone else after they have died (or if there is confusion about who killed who) it says "The Guardians" killed you. I don't know of any significance but that's what I know. Sorry if I didn't answer your question.

Yeah, my brother and I often kill each other at the same time. We're kind of robotic with our shooting, pistol at each other, get close enough - both switch to shotgun or AR - and both die.

The Guardians comes up then.

When on multiplayer you shoot someone but as he dies he pulls the trigger and a lucky round slams you straight in the head it will say guardians killed 'your name here' it prevents the player who died first from getting a frag for the kill. hope that answers your question

happened to me once on Damnation when me and my friend had a "boxing match" where you just punch each other. We did it on the skinny platforms where the water is coming down. Long story short, I punch him, he punches me and I slip off (I didnt move, the force knocked me off) and it says the guardians killed me. He didnt die but I didnt. Strange

Ah ok - so instead of a frag each, it just keeps it the same?
