I'm really new to all this and was wondering if someone could answer my questions about groups.
1. If you join a group can you later leave that group if you wanted to?
2. Can you join more than one group at a time?
3. Do you need to have Xbox live to join a group?

I think that's everything I want to know, but if anybody has got any info or advice that they think I might want to know, you are very welcome to give it.

1. Certainly. Once you have joined a Group, the "Join This Group" link changes to a "Leave This Group" link.
2. Yes, you can join up to 25 Groups.
3. You only require a Bungie.net account to join a Group - unless the Group staff state otherwise (Group staff control everything, including basic requirements). It will tell you if there are any special requirements in the Group description.

My only advice to you is - get involved! You're sure to meet lots of great people if you're active. If you feel you can't be involved in a Group, it's probably better to not be there. Nobody likes inactive members.

You may even want to look into creating your own Group, if you've something special to offer the community.

By inactive do you mean to playing Xbox live or just talking on forums?( I don't have Xbox live )
And another thing, can you send a message to a single person or can you only talk in the forums (if you can please tell me how).

By inactive I mean by not being a part of the Group, XBL doesn't really come into it unless the Group specifies otherwise.

Yes you can. Just click the msg user button next to the reply button of the person you wish to talk to, or go into the persons profile, and click Msg User.

With what Psyched said before, about XBL not really coming into it, when I go to the classifieds all I see is everyone wanting people to join their clans and nothing about just joining their group.

That's just cause a lot of people have xbox live. You can still advertise groups there too.

Clans aren't the same as Groups, Groups are more social and community-focused areas (but CAN and MIGHT have some XBL presence), while clans are fully XBL, but might have a Group.

Clans are a type of group. Chapters are the other type.

Technically, yes, but most people refer to Chapters as Groups and Clans as Clans.

wow. This is all very confusing. (well not all just the last bit).
basically to the original questions:
groups are great but there are quite a lot of them.
The cassifields is useful. I've just advertised my group there (see thread).
I know there are a lot of clans advertised there and that's what confused me at first.

The group Directory there will allow you to advertise your group or find other groups.

:) it's confusing at first.

I'm looking for a group to join that isn't primarily based around clans on XBL. I have searched through The Classifieds but there are just so many groups that it feels pointless to try to search through them all. Anybody welcome to tell me about their group.

You could also just give me a private message if you want.

A lot of Septagon-goers have community focused Groups, you should check out someone's profile (whom you like) and see if a Group they founded is for you.

Thanks, so what do you (or anybody else) think of my name, it's kind of a mix between spartan 117 and sangheili.

I'd kill myself if I could not leave groups! Sometimes, you see, what they say on the homepage is not true, so you end up in something you would never want to be part of.

Chapter Founders Bungie's Group Support
Mob of Angry Peasants

To look for a group I usually look for all the cool people on the b.net forums (after a while it is easy to tell) and see what groups they are in and join their groups. Unfortunatly I am not one of the cool ones.

Some popular groups:
Igni Ferroque Group made by Shishka one of the senior mods and now part time employee.

Mr. Smiley's Xbox Lounge One of the popular groups that just has XB0X discussions or other stuff.

The Marty Army Started by Marty O'Donnel Bungie's Mistro extrodnair.

And there are many others just have a look around.

This is true and shows that clearly the founder hasn't thought it out properly.

What i hate is people creating groups, waiting a few days, then letting them burn as they desided they don't want it any more.

I think people should only create a group if they're serious about it.

I'm starting to advertise groups in the Classifields so look out for my posts. (go tho group directory).
