Try loading it with NO HDD attached. If that works, then your disk is fine.
That won't fix it permanently, but it will test for that.
If you have Oblivion, try playing it for a little bit, save a game, explore some area - then try H3 again.
did the clean disc / clean disc tray thing.. no workie... cleared the cache from the link above.. redownloaded the update.. no workie.. cleared the cache and tried campaign mode without re downloading the update.. no workie.. disconnected the hard drive and tried to play campaign.. no workie.. okay. so based on frankie's suggestions that means my halo disc is bad.. how is this possible?? It never left the drive.. like one minute it's in the drive working fine and the next minute.. with the new update downloaded. my disc is too scratched or dirty to work? wtf?? how is that possible.. bungie gremlins in my drive clawing up my disc?
