im glad the update is here!
overall i am very pleased with the melee situation, and i dont feel gypped when i get beatdown, or kill during a thwack dual.
i have however experiance soem weird problems today that i havnt noticed in times past.

1. there was an instance today in which me and my foe engaged in a thwack dual and both died. fine with me, it reminds me of the H1 days. however, rather than both be awarded a kill, like usually happened to me today, he was award 2 kills, and i was awarded 2 beatdown medals. strange? i think so, i even asked him about it after the match and he confirmed it.

2. there have been at least 3 times today in which i stuck the other player with the plasma nade, and rather that dying the nade "diffused" or didnt explode. i also noticed this a few times when i had thrown the nade on the floor for a suicide, or just as a general chaos creater.

are these problems that have popped up because of the update? has anybody else experianced any similar problems?

i havent had sticking issues but the needler is now a piece of CR@P
(srry for languge, but u cant kill with it any more even if the guy stood still, i guy didnt to me and i ended up killing him)

besides that the update just needs a good getting used to, with the beat downs and all

I'm happy with the update, specially the fact that now both players can die. However, I do miss flying of the map when I got hit!

If it's not broken we'll fix until it is.

I don't see how people can say the new melee is bad? The new system is a lot better than what it was before.

The Auto Update is great! Very helpful, thanks!

Sorry Bungie for people saying this game is crap. I wanna see them try to make a videogame.

I loves u Bungie!

This was not a minor update. I'm pretty sure everyone is as pissed off as me about this update. First off, what the hell is the problem with having the guy who beats down FIRST win? Doesn't that make perfect sense? Think about it. I get that there are bad people that do play this game, but that's their problem. Come on though.... Why bother with these people. If there was a skilled melee, they'd get better and then there would be no problem. I saw no problem at all with Halo 2. Halo 2 was skill. The beat down worked. Period. There's nothing else to it. The faster player with better reflexes won the melee contest. I mean of course there was the additional BXB glitch, but if you ask me the BXB and the other weapon glitches are what made the game good. Bungie is now worried about the beat down because of the BXB. The new players didn't know how to do it. But this is Halo 3 Bungie, not Halo 2. There's no more BXB and there never will be. It's just a press of a button for Halo 3, but it takes reflex. I didn't understand why so many people on my friends list are playing other games. Now I understand why. I've been playing more and more of Halo 2 lately. Halo 3 has become one of the most skill lacking games I've ever played. Not only does the melee suck, but the rate of fire, the weapon sets, the map layout, and even the basic gameplay. There's so much wrong with this game. It might as well have been made for people that are new to the Xbox 360. But Bungie, tell me what happens when these "noobs" become better. They'll see the problem with the beat down. And you'll lose customers to Call of Duty 4 and Gears of War 2 which is coming out in November. If you don't make this game more legit that will happen. I've already seen a major decrease in the amount of players in Halo 3 since Call of Duty 4 came out. I will never play Call of Duty 4 again, and I will stay loyal to Halo 3, but there needs to be many updates to this game. I'll make a list:

1) Fix the melee. This game should not be directed to "noobs" anymore. The person with the first beat down should win the melee battle. Also, the beat down with an objective item in Matchmaking should always be one hit kill. I'm pretty sure many people agree with this. If you can't make it one hit kill, you should make it so that when you jump and beat down it's a one hit kill. Just like in Halo 2. Also the beat down with a regular gun should take down less shields. It should take down a half when standing still, three fourths while running, and all shields when jumping (not meaning your dead, just one shot). This would make the game a lot more fair and legit.

2) The sniper. I see two things wrong with the sniper. The most noticeable thing is the rate of fire. It is way too slow. You should make it about a half a second faster between shots. The second thing I noticed was that the shot between first and second or third and fourth has a delay. It is about a one and a half second wait and I don't think it should be there.

3) Overshield. There are many problems with the overshield. First being that it's too weak. It needs to be a three times overshield like in Halo 2. Instead it only gives you a double shield, which basically does nothing. All it takes is two head shots with the sniper and you're dead. Another thing wrong with it is that it takes too long to fully charge. I'll give you an example. All of us skilled players have heard the line, "Wait for them to come to us to pick up the overshield." Does anyone know why this is? They're taking advantage of Bungie's mistake. Have you ever gone over the gravity lift on Guardian that leads to the overshield on the sniper tower? Once you got there you picked up the stick grenades so you could stick someone and get an easy kill. But out of no where the overshield guy comes in. So you throw a stick grenade in panic and run away. Even though the stick grenade lands right on the guys face he doesn't die, but instead you do. Either by getting assault rifled, or by getting knocked off the map by your own stick grenade. This has happened to me a lot. And the worst part is that you always have the shotgun. What happened was that the guy with overshield just picked it up. The overshield makes you invincible for a good 10 to 15 seconds. In Halo 2 you were invincible for 5. I see a major problem with this.

4) One shot kill guns. If you camp with the mauler, shotgun, sword, hammer, rockets, etc. I don't like you. I had to put the etc. there because it's basically an endless list. I even classify the brute shot under this category. All you need to do is shoot the guy once and then beat down. Automatic kill just like the mauler. There are too many power weapons in this game. Even though Bungie doesn't classify them as power weapons, they really are. I recommend putting just one power weapon, if any on a map. Excluding the sniper rifle. That gun takes skill to aim unlike the shotgun which you camp underground with and shoot someone once and then they die and of course you tee-bag him. That's a problem. Once you get those weapons you won. That shouldn't be that way.

This is a new list I made really quickly. If you would like me to add to this send me an email: mszhang31@yahoo.com about what you would like. Bungie, I hope you read this and think about it. Halo 3 is the best, but... it's not how it should be.

LOLOLOLOL

I'm astonished at your effort buddy.... but seriously? I'm not slamming you, I agree with most of what you said, but you honestly think Bungie is going to listen to us? Scroll back through the posts, how many times has a Bungie rep actually replied to us players? Zero. It's not going to happen. They don't read this stuff.... they start a thread and bail like rats on a ship. I hate to break it to you but the shotgun will stay on Snowbound, Hammer and Shotty will remain on Guardian, and the super fast spawning rocket will still re-appear every 5 seconds on Epitaph. Melee will never be perfect. And thats that.

I for one am happy with the update and I think Halo 3 is the sickest game ever, THANKS BUNGIE EVEN THOUGH YOU'LL NEVER EVER READ THIS!!!!

Oh and just so I can sound "cool" like most people on these boards:

"ZOMG BUNGEE CAN I HAZ RECON ZOMGZOMGZOMG PLZPLZPLZPLZ"

From x Square One x's post:

I honestly am stunned at this post. I'll try to not bash you too much on this one kid...

The beatdown system seems to work fine for me, and it applies to everyone, so it's even across the board. Get used to it son.

You sticking someone with an overshield that's CHARGING and them not dying is the key here. Let their shields charge, THEN stick them. Come on, you can't be that much of a newbie to Halo if you're on Bungie.net...

Anyone saying a map sucks just hasn't learned how to play that map. I veto Snowbound all the time because I really do suck at that map. It's a perfectly good map, I just can't seem to find a rythym on it at all. Sucks to be me when I'm on Snowbound. Sucks to be you on Foundry. Oh well, get over it or practice on the map more.

This is slightly true, though still mostly another 'get used to it'. The AR is a perfectly good killing weapon as most people's stats show (INCLUDING YOURS: 2nd most used weapon for kills!). You start out with this weapon in most game types, so a spawn next to someone who's been running around the map longer shouldn't be that much of an issue.

The ranking system is perfectly fine, especially at higher levels where it means more if you win. Try getting better ranks by not losing is all I can say there.

Shotty on Snowbound is really easy to counter, I rarely see someone go on more than a shotgun spree since as soon as someone gets it they find that the underground is sparsely populated by anything more than g-nades.
Rockets on epitaph? It's in the exact center of the map where everyone can see you getting the rockets. If you listen, you can also HEAR when someone's about to get the rockets. Know what to do then? Get to the outside of the map and don't stand in the rocket's way like a newbie.

So far you've suggested getting rid of three maps. You're a freaking Brigadier with over 22k kills in ranked alone. If you didn't like THREE maps you'd have stopped playing around rank 30.

Saying one of the top selling games of all time, that sold more copies in a day than most music artists sell in a year, is garbage doesn't really have anything to back it up, other than yours and a few other people's opinions. Quit getting frustrated over your shortcomings and enjoy what Bungie has created for you.

From QuadShot v2's post

Ah the elitist gamer who hates the fact that noobs might actually kill him once in awhile. (I should leave this post at that, but this will be fun)

(I'll even number them just like you did!)
1. You obviously didn't read too far into this update at all since you didn't see that latency makes knowing who threw the first melee impossible to decide. The new system doesn't fix it entirely, but it certainly makes a better effort than the old system. This system does not directly affect noobs, it affects those with worse connections. In fact, noobs actually are set at a disadvantage since most skilled players will back up from a melee and keep shooting. In the old system or the new, meleeing is still not the best or easiest way to kill someone if they know what they're doing.
The rest of your argument in your first item would mean rewriting a ton of code. I'm not going to pull the old 'why don't you write the code and submit it to Bungie instead of complaining about it' bit, but I will suggest you fork over the money to pay the programmers to redo all that code instead of Bungie doing it. This game is a business. You should be happy they care at all to make updates.

2. If you can't kill someone with one shot with the sniper, you shouldn't be playing as a sniper. Easy fix there. No need to rewrite all the codes for the sniper rifle :)

3. The overshield is too weak, yet you complain about 15 seconds of invincibility? AND you're complaining about two obviously slow sniper rounds (you said so yourself, it's too slow right?) taking down an overshield? You're right when you said you didn't spend much time on your list of things to fix. If Bungie seriously considered all this, the programmers would all quit and we'd have no updates whatsoever.

4. If you camp in Halo 3 there's these great equalizers called grenades. See my 51 Killjoy medals? I'd bet money most of them were from killing people with these magical one-shot wonders you describe. The mauler and shotgun have to be within melee range to kill. I for one do not really like closing in on someone wielding one of those. If you do, well that's your business, and probably why you're mad at campers. I'd rather throw a nade at campers and be done with them.
I'm surprised you lumbed the hammer in there, as I've really come to love it when people try to run around with one of those unwieldy things. If you backpeddle while someone's running at you, they don't lunge with the hammer, they just swing it and you go flying out of reach. If you're having trouble with hammers, then perhaps you should try backpeddling instead of rushing towards them (I really shouldn't have to explain this to a Brigadier)
The sword is the sword, it will always be the sword. It was a one-shot kill in all three Halos (don't tell me an elite never got you in Halo 1 with it). If you're still complaining about the sword you have some serious love/hate issues.
Rockets have seen NO change either, especially from 2 to 3. It's a freaking ROCKET, it SHOULD kill you!
You're even classifying the BRUTE SHOT as a one shot wonder? How are you letting someone get THAT close to you with a brute shot? It happens to me every once in awhile, but come on. If all you want is BR's and snipers then go play some custom games and let us enjoy figuring out ways to get the 'power' weapons out of other player's hands and into ours.

It's called using tactics instead of running blindly into a bad situation. Most players can understand this pretty easily, and contrary to your post, I've seen maybe yours and 3 other people's posts in this thread that agree with you. One actually used reason. You're not him.

Oh and it's tea-bag, and I agree that the rampant tea-bagging is a problem. I certainly don't want my genitals (even if they're behind shielded armor) anywhere near another male's mouth. I'd appreciate the same in return, even if it is my dead body. (EW for necrophilia, just plain ew!)

I played a dozen or so games after the update and i have to say i don't like it. It feels like a completely different game. I mean, i don't mind the beat down fix but everything else is horrible, and feels like all the other weapon changes made for noobs. I'm not saying that I'm an expert, i took almost 2 years off from halo 2 when i was in the Army and just started playing again with halo 3 about 2 months ago, but when i was starting out i learned to deal with the fact that things wouldn't always work in my favor just because i was new, now i have to do it all over again. I agree with some of the changes but many of the others should have been left the same it was fine the way it was.

I actually am realy satisfied with the results of the melee update. Even though both players may die at the same time, at least at least neither of them are getting screwed out of a point for their team due to connection related issues. I realy feel a fair game.

Just wanna know, has this update affected how other melee weapons work, like the sword and grav hammer? Because I've noticed a difference with the sword, it took me two full contact lunges to take down one guy yesdterday in Lone Wolves.

Hey man, Epitaph is my absolute favorite map, followed closely by Snowbound.

Yes... they are great maps if you like being a camping shotgun whore.

I actually like snowbound, IF people would stop camping in the shotgun room. Playing outside in the snow is rather fun.

PROJEKTROCKET - I've noticed the plasma 'nade problem. my mate (TheSpliffMaster) has a similar problem on film on his file share. He gets hit in the face but suddenly it explodes on the floor behind him, like it slipped off him while running.

Auto Update is sweet. the logic behind judging who wins is simplistic but very, very fair. I used to lose the plot during games as i knew i had filled my opponent with rounds but would lose the melee :(

See y'all online!

...

I love the new melee rules, but the fact that bodies will no longer randomly go flying saddens me :(

no more walking and a corpse lands in front of me randomly, or seeing my body hurled into the air after an epic melee battle. Why was this "fixed"?

The flying melee death was one of the perks to losing a melee battle. It gave you something to watch during the respawn counter other than your opponent running around the map.

The Brute Shot has definitely been weakened noticably from Halo 2, particularly in the area of splash damage. Situations that took two or three shots and were guarenteed in Halo 2 now take four or five and are no longer guarenteed. It requires much more skill and much more precise aiming and direct hits now, which leaves the opportunity for opponents to jink and dodge for escape.

Uh, melee got worse. Now not only do I die more, in the off chance that I actually do kill someone in a melee contest, my shields get taken down. Change it back please.

Me and my friends all HATE the update. We're selling Halo today. We also ran into a lot of people pissed about the update. Its one thing to change the melee, which I actually don't mind, its another thing to change everything!

We noticed in our games:

It takes less brute shots to kill someone now

It takes more assault rifle shots to kill someone, especially if theres some distance. I unloaded a full clip on people, cross hairs on them the whole time, and he didn't die. No overshield or anything. Actually, I've noticed that with other weapons as well, like the battle rifle, needler, and shotgun. If I shoot someone in the face, and melee them with a shotgun, they should be dead. Well, they should be dead after the one shot, but yea.

Definitely noticing more stickies NOT going off and just fizzling away.

They changed every weapon. Changing the melee, I was fine with that, because yes there was a problem. Changing every single weapon? No thanks. Its not something I want to try to get used to. I was annoyed with the changes to lone wolves awhile ago, and now I don't even want to play the game anymore with the changes now. Especially if all of my friends hate it now, what the hell am I supposed to do? Play Halo by myself?

You guys can flame me all you want. Insult me or whatever. I calmly and respectfully stated my problems with the update. I was definitely not the only one noticing these issues Wed. Theres most likely other changes I haven't even noticed yet that will annoy me as well. And honestly I'm not going to sit around waiting for them to try to fix it if theres enough backlash.
