We can only hope that in the coming months, many of those who joined and are causing havoc will leave forgetting this place, believing that this is nothing more than a sight to get a symbol next to their gamertag in matchmaking. And when they are gone, I really hope to see a great number of my favorite posters are still here.

I don't think I've seen so many padlocks to the left of so many threads sense I've joined, this is a bit of an epidemic. Achronos undoubtedly had a busy day himself, and I never seen him in action more than about twice a day, before anyway.

But on that note, their may yet be some good out of this; perhaps some of those new members will actually be good, entertaining new regulars that really contribute to the community.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

Unfortunately, it's not the new members causing havok recently. There are a number of older members who have gotten bored of the entire thing, and instead of -blam!- ing off like most people, they decided that they could have fun by trolling. Unlike usual, however, they didn't do a good job of it. Any troll who is noticed, after all, has failed.

I think I see what you're talking about. I myself hadn't seen the particular thread (nor do I want to, as from what I hear my respect for many members would be tainted) but from a few things I've seen from the fallout (i.e. threads created in reaction to it) many veteran members had been disrespectful at best, including a forum ninja. Apparently, a good number of those who had a reputation as good community members have been either coaxed, or been coaxing (possibly both) members (of whatever merit) into appalling behavior.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Reading through this thread all that came to my mind was naked women. Why? I don't know.

Everything changes. That's just how it is. All we members can do is adapt to the recent changes that this community have gone through. Eventually, as you so eloquently stated, the community will change back into the pearl it once was.

We are million more members than we were a couple of years ago. Obviously things will change. When you come to Bnet not you're not special anymore. You're just one in a million, a brick in the wall. It's amazingly, horribly stupid how hard it is for people to adapt to the changes Bungie and it's community have gone through.

As you said: Hang on. Things will be different when Bungie goes into post- Halo 3 and pre- secret new project. Then we'll hopefully get rid of all the whiners, and the core that make up this community will live like it once did.

Late Edit: IMO the biggest problem is not the change the community have gone through. It is the "Everything was better in the good, old jolly days" whining that is the biggest problem. It members here could just accept the current state of the community a lot of the problems would've never even seen the daylight.

It was kind of strange. It just happened all of a sudden. I don't understand what the big problem was and to be honest I don't want to know. I think we should all just move on and look to the future.

Proud Member of the Worker's Revolution
Halo 3 in the Workplace

It seems like there is just a lot of peeing on trees and lampposts lately; a territorial thing. And, really, I get it, but it then crosses the line into an expectation to be treated differently.
Everyone gets their head turned around a bit when the population explodes and half the people here don't know the rules, and don't really "get" the community aspect either, but in the "good old days" the old vets and the pre-existing community would try to help the new kids along, and that sadly doesn't happen as much anymore. There is this isolationist slant where some of the longest lasting (and intelligent, well spoken, and typically good intentioned) members want to lock themselves in a safe haven and disassociate themselves from what the community is becoming. I think that is unfortunate, because this community has always been changing, but it takes the vocal, experienced, members - who by their tenure have proven their commitment to the site, to help steer the ship and provide direction. That just seems to really be lacking lately.

I'll keep this to the point, short and sweet. I have class right now and need to finish some work.

Since all this has happened, I can only see a few open doors. The Community members who are passionate about B.net's continued success need to look in themselves and concentrate on what needs to be done. Helping members, reporting threads, and continually looking for new ideas to improve the site.

That is really all we can do until the new project is announced. I too am tired of talking about Halo.

If I could sum up two words from the OP, it would be his/her own: Hang on.

Again, I think you guys are taking the forums to seriously, learn to relax and have some fun. The moment you treat this place like it's real life and sort of a job is the day it goes down the hole.

Saying, "I'm a Mythic member, I've wasted so much time on this forums", doesn't give you the right to make the forums as boring as your mom. And I'm not Mythic, boo hoo, those titles don't mean anything. I've been here since two thousand stinkin three! Do you honestly think I care what my title says or what some other person's title is? Do you realize that you're on an I.N.T.E.R.N.E.T. forum? None of this is even real, if you think it does, well I hope someday you get hired by Bungie because there's nothing to be gained from acting stuck up all day.

If you guys really care about the community, learn how NOT to care.

P.S. Ciaran, can you please add TFM to the list of groups, I think they deserve some acknowledgment.

That is all...

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."

This is what I had to say in that thread last night:I roamed the forums for a year before joining before Halo 2 came out. I'm sorry that I have no idea what the groups were like back in the day. I wish I could've been here for that, but I wasn't.

I joined this site because I liked Halo. I posted for a while, enjoying Halo discussions. Sure, the forums are a mess, but there are good topics in them sometimes.

I will stay here, even when Bungie doens't make anymore Halo games. I like this community. I feel like I'm a part of it.

I do not care whether I am known or not. Hell, I've been here for 3+ years and people have only recognized me within the last 6 months. I do not care what my member title is (which I don't think I should be Mythic. I shouldn't even be in the same class as Reiginko, Ghandi, or any of the other mods or Bungie employees). I try my best to be a kind member. I try to help people because I want to. You might see it as something else, and that's fine, it's your opinion.

Sure, some ideas around here are rather stupid, but that doesn't change the fact that at least people are trying. Sure, some may be trying to gain something, but I do believe others try just for the sake of trying.

Once again, I'm not exactly sure what I'm saying here. I guess I'm just giving my overall opinion on the matter.

I don't know guys I feel like this is the best version of the bungie.net community since the 2001 days. Mostly because if I want I can completely ignore the Halo 3 forum and browse awesome Halo 3 threads on the top topics page. Something we could never do before. The good threads on the New Mombasa forum (2004) were almost always instantly lost in the flood of crap posts by whiny pistol lovers.

We've always had expansion problems but I feel like this time we've actually addressed them. First was the report user feature, second trust rating and finally top topics. What we need to do next is tweak each feature and make them more visible.

Save awesome threads, Report the lame ones. Keep it up and this community will get even better.

Ya...I'm pretty sure this is exactly what Josher was talking about. Equating an internet Forum to real life events is just silly and completely ruins things.

Josher didn't say we shouldn't do anything....that's what we're doing right now. He said we should have fun, and quit being tightwads. (I've always wanted to use that word) And while I agree with him, I think the problem is, people don't understand what makes a Forum fun...and so they go about it in away that makes everyone else miserable (i.e. Spam). But, as Stosh said, now we have a few features that can actually change that. The report button is a very effective tool and I think it's worked wonders already...although people still seem to have to post in the thread "This will be locked," or even worse (in my opinion), "Reported, loser."

If we can ignore (and report) the bad threads and start supporting threads that actually deserve our attention, then we might start getting somewhere.

(And ironically, this post will probably be ignored because it's right beneath some fabulous pink text. You ruin everything, Stosh.;-))

I still noticed it Halifax. You hit the nail on the head. One of the other things though is trying to keep a thread on the front page long enough for even one person to read it in some forums. I have often wondered how many original or great threads fade into nothingness because it is not a topic that involves beating a dead horse.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

I tend to agree with Josher on this one.

As soon as the Community decides to be a community and not a bunch of individuals trying to one-up each other, this will become a much better place. Somewhere along the line, people forgot that we all came here for the same thing basically. We've forgotten all about our homô-erotic Bungie man-love and decided to go down the "I'm a metter member than you" road.

Everyone just chill, and learn to enjoy each others company.

From the ashes

This has made me think of where I might be in a few years with Bungie. Even though I joined this community as a Halo fan and ignorant of Bungie's past achievements and games. I think I'm starting to view this community as a family, or I already am but I haven't realized it yet. And like all families it does have it's up and downs.

I have no Idea if this is just some phase this site will go through( none of us know of course) or a down period, I'll ride with Bungie and this community as long as I can( which I hope will be a LONG time). And after steam dies down and after the dust settles from Halo's effect, I hope that what made this community what it is, like the people will still be here.

The " Implosion" Ciaran talks about could be inevitable, but Bungie could be a phoenix and we all know what phoenixes are known for. We'll remain, a community tight and strong, helping each other and doing whatever. Bungie will remain.

Edit: also I do agree with josher, we should have fun and enjoy the ride. If I interpreted it right.

I'm a serious dude, so what?

figuring that this was just another "Concern about the Bungie.net Community" thread, I must say that I was definitely impressed with some of these posts.

It seems to me that some people are optimistic, some people pessimistic, but everyone agrees that the main problem is simply a numbers game. We should be grateful that the moderators are apparently keeping a very close eye on this forum. When I got on here last night, I watched as 90% of the threads got locked. You can say that that is horrible and never seen before or a sign of decline or whatever, but the truth is that it is mods helping keep this forum from turning into a spam/flame fest. All those kids that got their crap locked, they aren't coming back, and if they do they'll be a little more wary of what they post.

The truth is that whatever Bungie's next super project will be, they will need money to fund all the research and development. I'm hopeful that they will dole out a few games that are, perhaps, less "entertaining" than Halo, but hat will give us, the community, a chance to figure out story lines, enjoy a different genre (hopefully), and also send them some R&D cash. With a little time and a story-oriented game, most of these forum knuckleheads will disappear, bringing Bungie.net back to its noble roots.

If we help each other in this forum, which we certainly do, and we are also quick to help the Mods clean our house, we can at least keep Bungie.net Community OURS.

Oddly enough. I agree with everyone in this thread; except for Opastar and his negativity. Oddly enough, the recent events has seemed to bring out all the members that were in hiding. I think though, that what aku said previously sums up my point.

The Community has had tension for a year or so now, and it was only a matter of time before people, myself included, back from '03-'05 started blowing lids. Honestly, I have came close to blowing up on quiet a few members, but remember that it is only the internet; take a break to clear my head, and all is well.

Basically, my point is that it was only a matter of time before any of this happened; and it will happen again, and again. As K Mart said, history repeats itself, and always will. With this thread in its entirety, I completely agree with every single one of you; except for Opastar.

Posted by: UL7IM4 G33K
This is the single most interesting thread I have ever had the pleasure of reading on the bungie forums. I may not have been around for long when the forums were still quiet, desolate and welcoming, but I do know that hopefully with the ending of the Halo series we can eventually return to such a state.

I have always been a fan of smaller forums. The community is always a close knit group of people who know how to have a good time and not cross too many lines. Its just a bunch of friends discussing what they love to discuss and other shenanigans. With larger forums, you lose the individuality to the mass and end up with just "the community" and not any specific members, You then begin to lose yourself in that mob of people, not knowing if you are really a member or just a shadow among the rest.

My goal in most forums is to not be a shadow, but a light. One who lights the path and helps people out, make the community a better place for everyone who joins and interacts with it. But with this large number of people that is almost impossible, my words are just washed away with the rest of the river that is the b.net forums. I try to aspire for a position that may let me have a greater effect on what happens here, but I am close to abandoning all hope for such a thing.

Unless this place shrinks, or implodes as you so violently put it, we may never see any progress here, just a perpetual whirlpool of conversation.

Agreed. I too like the small, close-knit forums. And I was shocked when I returned to the Bungie Forums after a couple months spent on the SupCom forums. The amount of pure imbeciles here shocked me, but I will not let it keep me away entirely. I have been preparing myself on the HaloWars forums, for the time I will return to the main Halo 3 forum, to be as UL7IMA said, a guiding light. I hope desperately, that Bungie will announce something that is not Halo at its roots, and the community will return to how it was before. I came to these forums not long before Halo 3 was announced, and so felt the full brunt of the blow, dealt by the many people flocking to the Bungie forums, both to suggest ideas and the such, but also for more despicable means, to troll, to criticize Halo, and Xbox in general. That second group of people is what caused me to leave, but I will not let them drive me away again. I belive we must venture out into the other Bungie forums, and push for a brighter day for these forums. We must make intelligent topics, and do our best to fight back against the spammers and trolls, the people that just make unintelligent posts in general. But fighting stupidity with fire will do nothing. We must fight it with intelligence. We must do what UL7IMA tries to do, and be a guiding light for these forums, and so help it weather this storm.

-     ~    .oO( about you )

    ¬

Hi all...

I'm faily new to the community (Nov.2007) and i kind off agree with the OP although I can't compare to what it used to be. I myself abused the forums (to an extent) at the beginning but i've learned. Payed attention to the bungie employees replys and posts as well as the moderators and senior members and guess what... i no longer abuse the system.
One thing i've learned is that sometimes just being nice doesn't work (helping replys)
and you end up abusing the system. The mods are here, let's let them do what they are ment to do and not try to be them, other wise the chaos will never end. In time just like me, the rest of the unruly ppl will realize that there is no point to be unruly and that they achive nothing. Things will change, for the better because as we grow so does every individual phisically and mentally. We're getting new updates, we're getting new features over all a better experience, just needs some tweaking but that's what change allows us to do, Tweak.
Just like making a new map in foundry, you have a concept, than you make it but than you keep tweaking and tweaking it and one day it's a work off art. And just like in map making or anything else it generally means sacrifices, sacrifices that are necessary for the over all outcome. So to all above "member" i say...
For now sacrifice, lead by example as they say. Before you reply to some meaningless post, stop yourself, think about the bigger picture, what am i going to achive by posting "this should be in the classifieds" or what not and than make your choice. Leave the thread, reply or report it. Don't ever say "I had no choice" because you always do.

Even though (i must admit) i get a bit frustrated with not getting hits on my posts or have my thread dissappear with in 5 min. I make a choice of not doing anything about it.
What counts is that... "I'm out there Jerry and I'm loving every minute of it"

In conclusion I'd like to say thanks to every one ob B.net just for being here.

o_O
