You've got to think crazy, of course, because you only get innovation by refining insanity. - Jason Jones

I usually don't post in these threads but here it goes. All things change, I wouldn't say things are different but that everything grew. Sure we will have our "special" people that we all laugh at as they are banned. I think things are going to get better from here on out. When companies get bigger and people who were once friends are on opposite sides of the building, they are still friends but they never see one another or get to talk much. That is the same thing that happened here, things are not worse they are changing.

Over at HFCS we're constantly hard...

Wait...
What?

Well, I guess I should throw in my 2 cents (I'll try and keep it short)

Things change, they have to, otherwise they die or become forgotten. For this awesome community that we are taking a part in constructing to continue to thrive, it must change, and with it it's members must also change.
Change can only come from something new, and in our case that something new are the new members to our community. So don't discourage or shun our new members, after all, weren't you at one point that new member looking up to the legends and old timers of the Bungie Forums?

Now that the friendly part is done I just have one last question-
Why is everyone saying "I don't care if I get banned or not" at the beginning of their threads? If you've got something to say that's unique, intelligent, and is appropriate for the forum, for goodness sake man up (or woman up, depending on your gender), get on your soapbox, and share your thoughts. There's no need to grovel to the mods and cower in the corner acting like they're just waiting for the right moment to smite you.

It IS as bad as you think and they ARE out to get you.

I agree that with others that the more people there are, the more idiots there are, but that's not all. The same thing that makes some other online communities rot, is the fact that everyone has a certain degree of anonymity here. With that comes remarks that a person would not say in reality, but since their only identity is their created name. That, coupled with the fact that there are so many people here, makes many feel that the only was to be known is to be loud, when that is the complete opposite of what one should do. Recognition comes with time, nothing else.
Not only that, but many of the users here feel that a post should be a direct translation of what he or she is thinking. If more people decided to actually post, meaning full, thought out responses, instead of the numerous remarks that clog up the forums (yes, a "response" is different that a "remark," example above), this would be a much friendlier place, albeit much quieter...or would it?

Regardless, one thing to remember no matter what happens is:
Life is too important to be taken seriously.--Oscar Wilde

And -blam!- like that is the reason why. You morons from the Flood and all its associated groups turn every post into your own little cutesy retort. Here's an example:

Poster 1: Guys, I need advice on what car to buy
Floodian 1: Buy the on with the death beam on top!
Floodian 2: Yeah! And with the green dragon decals!
<Continues for 3 pages until shut down>

You contribute nothing but garbage and it shows in the state of the forum. Congrats, you've managed to drive away alot of members and grind the forums into the ground. Floodians, Ass-kissers, and Attention Whores have basically turned this into a watered-down 4Chan.

They won't be dead in five years. That's totally ridiculous.

Reading through there have been one or two things I'd like to respond to, primarily the roles of the moderators. Remember that they are not meant to make a community, but simply to keep it within what bounds are set. A 'community' is an identifiable social group, expounded and run self sufficiently. Whilst it is crucial that we operate in an environment that is both friendly and in general order, that can't be our only aim. You don't garnish your food unless you plan to eat it. We need to abide, participate, contribute and test the depths of our imagination so that we have some substance. Something beyond melee glitches, beyond Bungie's next project even. We as a people, ourselves needing to create the place we desire, have to give the only thing we all have; ourselves. We can run a ship as well as we want, but if it doesn't sail, what would be the point?

Now to Josher’s point that we should not treat this all like a chore. You’re absolutely right. I have said that we belong to a community, not a business. The thing that is causing us a problem is the changing landscape of Bungie.net not allowing us to be the way we once were. My other point, is the same as K Mart’s; history repeats itself. Few of us want to move, none of us want to change. So we’re relying upon the tides of the larger gaming world to wash away. Our current unity is at rock bottom, and so it will take effort to bring it back up, just like forcing a smile when Aunt Fanny steps through the door, but it is by no medium going to be a ‘job’. If a person cares about what they are doing and have no requirement to join in, then it can never be one.

I suggest you actually read the OP. And if you feel in the mood for contribution, then I guess you missed the point that every other reply in this thread holds true to.

Live for nothing die for something.

Nice post OP, you don't see very decent posts anymore. Although I've been a member for about 2 years now, I really appreciate the community that we have here at Bungie, although it has seemed dumbed down a bit here lately with everything going on. Think positive, good things are rare.

Well Enough Alone...

~"The people who play Bungie games tend to sense that there's something behind the games that's attractive to them. Then they become fans of the games. And then they become rabid fans. And then they become employees of Bungie."(Life story) -Marty

There are those who said this day would never come. What have they to say now...

I agree. I haven't been here that long, but I believe I joined in time to see the downfall of the golden age of the bungie community. Already I miss it. The flamers, complainers, troller, whatever you want to call them, are attacking viciously from all angles and one thing is certain. Things will get worse before they get better. Much worse. But we must keep on fighting!

The biggest difference between now and a couple of years ago is that there's more spam now. A few of the older, "more respected" members have become trolls, and there aren't nearly as many good discussions here as there used to be. And don't fool yourself, it's only going to get worse. Anyone who believes that Bungie is done with the Halo Universe is lying to themself for comfort, and whether it be in 3 years or 10 years, Bungie will make another Halo game, it's just too damn popular to let go. And the support for Halo 3 will last for many years to come so Halo 3 fanboys will keep coming here, like it or not. No one can deny that there is more spam than there used to be years ago on these forums, and don't expect it to get any better even if it stays the same. It's ironic but Bungie's oldest and truest fans are the ones paying the price for their favorite game company's great success.

  • 02.20.2008 9:07 PM PDT

Things should go fine for bungie and the community as long as they avoid the concept of "In it for the money", and continue to product awesome games bacause they love gaming.

Even if Bungie ended up as a club of programmers who love gaming, I'd still visit the website... Unless, of course, the next project is the same story with different characters...

MLG is for kids that are too fat to excel at real sports

New Flood the home of all things random

OMG, gaming for the fun of it.

I went through three pages of posts working out what i was going to put and Death V1 said it all.

It's just a population spike, get over it and stop making whiney threads complaining about the state of the community, because by doing so you are alienating other newer members by simply pointing the finger and saying ''its all your fault''.

Bungie.net is simply going through the same thing as every other forum which is rapidly expanding. You feel as though the community is dying, because there are more varied posters, and you are less likely to see posts by your "e-friends" due to the fact that they are diluted by 50 other posters. You start out with your original core, which becomes very close, and slowly it gets dispersed due to hundreds of new posters.

Define 'varied'. Many of these posters can't even spell half a sentence. We're plagued by 'I can haz recon' with half page locks being a daily sight. I welcome new sensible posters, I really do, but I have yet to see many of them. I'd say there is about the same amount sensible posters as there used to be, despite the overall population growth, as many have been driven away. This relates to my last point.

This has happened in every individual forum on bungie.net…

Your random text generator is top notch by the way.

1. These two areas have their sad little elitist cliques who lament about how much fun it was back in the day when the whole group was together and they were the "big group" on Bungie. Everyone who asked for their groups to be mentioned in the OPs list are the exact types I'm referring to. ZOMG a list of important groups and WE'RE not on it?

I don't like you simply defining people who miss a better situation as 'elitists', and this is what we are dealing with; a situation. The Septagon made itself from the sprit that it was. The same people are there, the same opinions, but we can't operate in the environment I explained above.

2. The other areas don't allow threads like we see so commonly here, so it isnt as much of a public concern. How much of this good old days sympathy crap is actually genuine, versus how much is manufactured by the constant restating of how much better the past was?

The solution is simple, stop being cliquey, stop posting those damn old timers threads, and have some personal responsibilities over your actions. Be good posters, nothing more is needed, and there is no way you can ever expect to get the same feeling now, with over 2 million users, that you had however many years ago, with far less posters.

I'm glad you read my posts, because that's exactly what I'm suggesting. This is by no means an 'old timer' thread. I am not lamenting with a bottle of brandy how the old days were. What I'm doing is exploring then, now, the reasons why changes have occurred and what we should do in the future to continue enjoying the Seventh Column. And funnily enough, it’s the thing you’ve just come around to in your post, though you seem to present it as if we’re all missing the point.

Aye. There's always been this type of thread, but they're usually fewer and the amount of people agreeing with the OP is usually pretty low. Now, it seems the general opinion has changed and I'm just wondering if it was an over time thing or if there was some major event I managed to miss.

Not a major event, but certainly some disputes that served as a reminder to the problems that we have.

Yes the report feature FTW!

I have over 50,000 posts on different forums and I am willing to talk to anyone about anything that is civil and productive.

The reason I came to Bnet was because of Halo 2. The reason I came to the community forum and the godawful flood, was to expand my experience here. Also the community forum has more of the "mature" users in it generally. I'm 20 and maturity is a high thing with me.

The best way to fix this is to be a good contributing member. Use your report feature and have a nice day.

1 more thing, How many "Rate the above users trophy shot" threads do we need?

Also we need to end this MLG/Anti-Mlg, Elites vs. Spartans bull-blam!- also.

And the recon rule needs to comeback into effect. 30 days for mentioning it (in most cases, exceptions such as pk47's photoshop thread w/recon.)
