To answer your question Shai, I do actually understand what they were doing and why they were doing it. A portion of my question was rhetorical, and a portion was made in the hopes that my assumptions are totally wrong. Apparently they were not, but that whole issue has been thoroughly pounded into the ground, and its rather pointless to continue debating it.
Abusing members is never acceptable. We all agree to that. There is never an acceptable reason to abuse a member by extension. Regardless how any any of us feel about it, the people who run the site don't want it. Ego, it won't happen (well, without some repercussions).
Rather than that specific incident, let's address your primary point. Some members thought that there was a problem, so that decided to do something about it. While I don't usually have any problems with pro-activity, they need to be tactful at the very least. I personally don't see a problem with someone posting strange things in order to help people. Hypothetically, say someone was posting in this forums solely because they think it will help them be asked to moderate the forums. If they're forum copping abusively, they are clearly a problem. Simply reporting them or PMing a mod and asking them to take a loot at someone will easily solve this.
If you're right about most of the users who interact with this particular forum, most of them are looking to become mods, but they are not usually abusive. They are actually helpful. What's wrong with that? They are following the rules, and are being nice to people. So what if they want to be a moderator? Anyone who knows how the ninjas think will know that they will never be asked to moderate if they're transparently trying to become one. So what are they doing? Being nice and helpful. Perhaps they're doing more than that in their mind, but that's clearly of little consequence.
I only see one problem with the above scenario. Its the potential for people to lash out at someone they don't like because the helpful person annoys them in some way. Well, if that's a problem, I think it can also be easily dealt with, as we know it has been dealt with .
In all reality, none of this matters. The whole issue is based on the axiom that a security setting entitled "forum ninja" is worth a damn. Its not. That's why its a volunteer job. People may convince themselves that its worth something, but why would we care what delusional people think? Let them think what they want to think. It won't hurt anything. Our only real objective should be improving, or what I think is a better pragmatic description interacting with the community. Simply come here, post your thoughts (if they're within the parameters of the rules) and enjoy being here. Do that, and we're all in good shape.
So, the consensus is now that stosh and his mom is awesome, and we should make fun of them? You know how I feel about abusing members on this site.
Though stosh totally deserves it. Look at his ego. It totally needs to be smashed into the trash can. And look at his mom. She's so hawt, how could one not want to delve into her warm, womany bits? I say we start a petition. A petition to make stosh's mom available for any and all of our needs, at any and all times. I think we should start with a petition to the UN. Anyone know how those things work?
-edit-
"Pro-active action" sounded stupid.
