Subject: Proposal: View your own blacklist/warn history

Essentially what I propose is to allow users to be able to view their own blacklist/warn history. Let me be clear, this does not mean that they are able to view other users' history.

I've received quite a few PMs from people asking why they were blacklisted and it is very easy and quick for me to find out. However, I feel that it would be beneficial to users to have a history list in their profile rather than relying on being able to find the PM(s) by the soul or rely on memory (which, if anyone else is like me, is terrible).

I'd love to get the community’s opinion on this and discuss any potential problems that may arise.

That would be really cool and interesting! I hope that this suggestion will be taken into use!
EDIT: and would it be like besides the saved thread button? like for example, messages---groups---saved threads--- Bans and warnings history

It seems to me that a user who has behaved shouldn't need to see their history, because a short list of incidents should be very easy to remember

I have personally only been warned two times, never banned, however it would be interesting to see why you were warned (can't really remember) and how close you are to promotion/degrading

Doesn't the soul tell you what you did wrong?

I know you used to be notified with a big screen saying OPERATION CANCELLED DUE TO BLACKLISTING. And then the moderators message/reason.

I don't think people should see it because it becomes a bragging point alread. I can see it now, people braggin saying "check out my blacklists! ^____^" with a screenshot.

I can see how it would help with knowing what you did wrong, but I agree with Pezza on this one. There would be topic after topic of "OMG, I've had 24 blacklists!! Look HERE!!" Then again, maybe there wouldn't be.

Turaga008: I imagined that it would appear under the signature preview in your profile.
Duardo: That could be problem but engineering people to view your thread or a link within the thread is really against the rules anyway.

The soul still sends a notice I believe but it may be a pain to trawl through pages of PMs. Bragging I suppose could be an issue, but technically users can already do this and can simply take a screen shot of warning PM(s).

Really my intention was to find a way of reminding people of previous warnings in the hope that they don't repeat the same mistake. Those who are already intent on causing havoc on the forums and deliberately breaking rules would do this regardless of whether they have access to their history or not.

If as many people request it as you're post coveys, than perhaps it would be beneficial to have it, there by freeing ninjas to more practical use of their time.

I have not been blacklisted in ages. But I would like to point out that when I was blacklisted the soul was just too general. If it were done this way people could find out the specifics of why they were blacklisted.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

This could work. What I would like to see though is when people are blacklisted that they can still at least see the post that got them their ban. Without being able to see it most people still would have questions even if they can see their ban history.

Good idea. That would definitely help people.

I was also thinking...perhaps we wouldn't be able to see everything about our blacklist/ban history, but only certain parts of it. I doubt Achronos would want us to see everything about it.

I got warned for a while ago, and I got a message with a link to the thread which got me the warning. (I replied to spam-.-)

With a warning you can still see it. When you are blacklisted you do not get to see what you posted until the blacklist is over. Most members probably do not check it at all especially if the ban was over 3 days.

The problem isn't so much about users asking why they were blacklisted because we can find out in seconds. The problem is mostly about how to help prevent users from un-intentionally making the same mistakes.

Obviously the users must hold some responsibility on making sure they remember rules and read any new rules that may be put into action.

OMG, gaming for the fun of it.

I'm sorry but i don't really see why people would need to see their history.

I think most will know when they been warned and blacklisted.

I think it's a pretty good idea. I have been blacklisted once or twice, while ago, and as I recall, the Soul was clear. It told me who banned, and gave me the reason that the Moderator gave it. However it has been awhile, and I suppose if I ever needed to reference the reason for the blacklist, I could not argue against having it available to me.

My only worry is I think that giving users this resource could potentially lead to abuse of the system that assigns Herioic/Legendary and Mythic, by leading people to understand the system better than they were meant to. That is my only concern, and it is far fetched compared to the benefits. Achronos works hard to keep people from understanding this system. Again, this concern would probably hold little ground in practical application, but I wanted to throw it out there.

Given that small concern, I otherwise like the idea.

And I also appreciate that you made it clear we could not view other's ban histories. That would create elitism, flaming and criticism unparralleled on the forum. People could say "Shut up, you got banned last month for spam, your opinion doesn't matter." or something of the like if we were able to view each other's.

Thanks again for the idea.

Best. Mod. Ever.

I had an idea with some similarities the other day. Whereas mine suggests a more automatic approach to blacklisting this keeps the same awareness of a person's own record while blacklisting still remains a moderator's personal responsibility, which is likely a far better route to a cleaner forum environment.

  • 02.21.2008 7:26 AM PDT

Chill out.

I think Pezza's prediction of what would happen is pretty accurate.
Users can already keep a record of their warnings by not deleting the PM's from the Soul, but for bans- once their over, you can't see what you were banned for- you have to remember your ban history.
I think a good compromise would be to send PM's the users when they are banned, along with the notice page. I know that would be a hassle for the ninjas, but maybe the system could be updated, and it could be made automatic.
That solves the problem of people posting screens of their ban history pages, and of people not having a record.

I don't get how this is similar to the idea of providing a backup history of past blacklistings.....

Maybe I'm missing something?

I think this would be a useful tool for any B.net user, Prophet. One thing though, would this blacklisting viewer only work for public forums or for private ones as well?
