I've just started playing Halo 1 on my pc and have been looking for a user guide of some kind that might explain the proper way of finding and joining a multiplayer game. I've just jumped into some random games and looked around a bit, so I can connect fine -- but I feel like I'm crashing in on someone else's party and don't really want to muck things up for other players.

I've searched Gamespy and Bungie looking for a user manual to the Internet Lobby but everything I've found deals with in game strategy or connection issues not what the column headings in the GameSpy Internet Lobby mean and how to find games open to new players.

I'm sure something is posted about this somewhere -- isn't it?

There are three mysterious little icons in the multiplayer browser column heading that I'll explain.

Starting from the left the first icon of the padlock toggles whether you want to filter games that requires a password to join. I'd keep that off for now. Why show password only games if you can't join them?

The next icon is a picture of a computer or more specifically a dedicated game server. Clicking it will toggle the option to filter them out. I like to keep that on and I highly suggest you do the same.

The last icon of a ring is to toggle whether or not you want to filter out classic Halo content. According to my manual blue means all gametypes and green means only games with original Halo content. Original content means games that DON'T include for example a fuel rod cannon or flamethrower on the level whereas all gametypes includes everything old and new that were added in Halo PC. I wouldn't care too much about this option. I think most games will have new content and filtering them out will just eliminate a ton of games for you at this point so keep it off.

One final item I want to stress is self explanatory. PING. I always arrange it in order and join the lowest pings first for the best lag free experience.

...but I feel like I'm crashing in on someone else's party and don't really want to muck things up for other players.
Don't feel that way. The games are open for everyone.

*edit* By the way you should have posted this here. This forum is for the Xbox version of the game only.
