Subject: Should Ratings Be Outta 10 or Outta 5?

I am on the File forums alot, mainly the picture section, and I've noticed, alot of (no offence) undesserving pictures have gotten 5/5. Your all probably thinking "Well thats YOUR opinion", well yeah it is.
Maby if pictures were outta 10, they'd be given an 8 or a 7 or something.

A full score should be something treated deaply. Not something like "I like all these pics so full score from me".

Your opinions?

As a Squirrel Ninja I promise this until I die, or can’t physically or mentally uphold the ways of the Squirrel Ninja.

I'd say out of 7 is a much more proper number.

/5 is good enough for what it needs to represent. Any more is as unnecessary as having 8 options on a strictly yes/no vote.

Really bad; bad; OK; good; really good

is all that we need.

OMG, gaming for the fun of it.

I would tend to think people are manipulating the results by getting their b.net friends to vote. So whether the top score is 5 or 10 they would still get an over inflated score.

Indeed.

OP, if you're talking about taking the scale up to ten to help diversify people's ratings, then no, I don't think that it would really be necessary. I agree that some pictures being rated aren't really deserving of high marks, but ratings are meant to be inherently subjective -- if a person wants to rate a screenshot well, then that's their prerogative.

I don't know about adding more options to the rating scale. I actually like it because it provides more general fields; someone who's rating a file doesn't have to ponder whether a file is worth a seven or an eight -- they can just think of a rough area which their rating would fall in, and then rate it a four or whatever the case may be. I think we're fine with what we've got now, and if you want to convert that to /10, you can always do as Batzter suggested. Granted, you won't be able to get odd numbers for /10, but sorry :)

I agree, five choices is enough.

Here's my opinion on the matter:

If we ever start using the ratings for anything (searching, filtering, etc), five categories will not be enough. We'd have 10,000 of each rating. A larger scale would give a more precise measure of a file's actual quality, given enough votes.

The point he is trying to make is that the rating should be more specific, like there should be half seventh columns or something to indicate that it is not perfect, but is very close.

for example, if two people voted 5* on it, and one person voted 1*, the average would be 11*/3 people, coming up with 3.666*. Why not just make that 3 1/2* instead of rounding it up to 4* or down to 3*?

If a ton of people voted 5* on something, and one person voted 1*, the average would not be perfect still, so why not just make it 4 1/2* instead of keeping it at 5*?

If anybody understands what I am saying, let me know.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure that it's not at all "the point he is trying to make". You would probably be best off not trying to put words in people's mouth.

Well, maby if there was a little tally under the (stars). Like 4.578/5.
Of like someone else said, half stars.

An 8 out of 10 is the same as a 4 out of 5. It's fine the way it is.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

X/7 duh....

I think he means there is an A- rating instead of just a B- and an A+ rating. A lot of people probably don't want too give the B- for an A- picture so they give an + (which would make sense).
