okay, if u wanna save, the x850 is better. The dual 6800 gt's are only a little better(5-15 fps or so). alienware is a pretty powerful pc company. however, is HELLOVA expensive. they have athlon fx 55's and all that great stuff. however, it depends on u navu. i think u should put ur pc together ur self and save up to 1,000.00 here are the parts u should get

a8n-sli ASUS mobo(175.00)
dual 6800 gt's (850.00)
athlon 3500 socket 939 (280.00)
dual channel pc3200 1 gigabyte of RAM (145.00)
antec true 480 watt
120 gb harddrive.
lastly a liquid cooling system.

Sexy, i don't like alienware too much. i only like ther cases witch i can get right from the internet.

well, maybe alienware is made by desperate aliens who need money fast. thats why they sell for such high prices.

Ok, first off I would like to say I know next to nothing about graphics cards and possess a very minimal knowledge of computer hardware. All I know is I have a GeForce FX 5200, which I believe is very sub-par (Am I right?). I may be interested in a budget to midrange card. I'm also not sure if I have PCI or AGP. How would I find out? My comp is a Dell Dimension 4600 (I know, its not the best) with a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 w/HT, 512 MB of dual channel RAM, and my OS is XP Professional w/ SP2. Any suggestions?

You have an AGP slot, that Dell comes with AGP by default. Yes, it is sub-par.

the real question is how much do you want to spend, or rather can?

And yes, the rest seems fine to me.

Oh, not much more than $100 but I could stretch it a bit for if that extra money would be a better bang for my buck.

Mmm, well you won't notice much improvement if you get a $100 card. The 9600XT would help a bit, get you twice as many frames every scene and better details, bu that's around 40fps. It would be a big improvement though from the FX5200. Get the card by Sapphire, it's basically an ATi card under a different name so it's a bit cheaper.

Depends on where you go. I've seen it for 115. Just wait a few weeks for prices to fluctuate. The X800's went from $550 to $450 on zipzoomfly in a matter of weeks.

That's still expensive but it's a big drop I guess. I've heard a lot of good things about the 9600 XT but how does it compare to cards in the "X" series (X300, X600, X700, X800, X850) and how does it compare to the cards mentioned before only in "Pro" edition?

to be honest mate, i would either get a budget card that does well for a short while or somehting that'll lasta long time, if u want it just to play halo and ur not to bothered about AA or antroscopic then get a 9550. and if u want it to last but dont want to spent too much or anything ridiclulus then get a 9800pro, and flask the bios to a 9800XT, but check u got the right core first.

hey i know this is a vid card post but i want a little advice about soundcards. just got a huge tower rosewill box put it together with windows me and linux running on two partitions
i dont have a soundcard yet and i got about 150$$ to spend any suggestions??
Posted by: sexy legs davis
A good, easy conversion rate: 1 pound = 2 us dollars (yep, the us dollar is really low). So that would be about 150 pounds. True, x700 is a bit less. Looking at the specs, it's a bit faster on paper...*checks tom's hardware*

The x700 and 9800 are very similar. BUT!!! It appears that the x700 pro actually outperforms the 9800 pro. In UT2004, it got almost 40 fps more than the 9800. On Doom 3, it got about 10 fps more. In general, it performs about 20% better than the 9800 pro. SO why is the pro more expensive? Ati's pushing PCI-Express...

My suggestion: Get the X700 Pro.

Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. If you want to spend that much, it's a good buy. It will give you good sound, espeically 5.1. Otherwise if you don't care get a generic $50 one, most Sound Blaster cards work - made by Creative, anything by them is good.

in the Max PC forums i saw a guy reccommending SLI and a X850XT PE. this does not seem right to me. i could have sworn that SLI was only nvidia and not ATI. well at least not now.
