Well Enough Alone...

~"The people who play Bungie games tend to sense that there's something behind the games that's attractive to them. Then they become fans of the games. And then they become rabid fans. And then they become employees of Bungie."(Life story) -Marty

And.......We all knew this. Although makeing them is far different from playing them. Even testing them can require skill, education, and persistance, It can get quite boreing. and to actually help make them you have to be experienced/ educated in some aspect of the development proccess. I'm working on my programin' skillz an' map makin' abilitiez.

You say tomato; I say potato.

The best way to understand how video games work is to learn some programming. Try your hand at some Visual Basic to get your feet wet.

I learned a lot about video game structure from modding Halo 2. I learned about the causes and effects of changing anything from jump height to swapping models.

I like how he wrote "Blam!" wrong in the title instead of the filter doing it.

...and to be actually useful...well making games isn't as cool and easy as some might think. I mean, yeah, it would be fun, but you'll be doing a LOT of boring programming before you can work for a company. Personally I've tried to learn C++ before and it's hard to get the motivation. But if you can do it, go ahead

There's more to being a Bungie employee than rare armor variants and colored forum posts. It is an actual job, that requires actual work and skill.

Don't get your hopes up.

Or make a smash hit while indie games are still in style. Can't tell you how to get started, you just take the leap and hope you land somewhere where you don't splatter like a pumpkin where you land.

Making a video game is difficult, time consuming, and only fun if you truly love it. Programming to some may be boring, but to others like myself it's amazing and inspiring. Every time I sit down to crunch out some more code I find myself working for hours to perfect a new aspect of my game.

You'll know if the job is right for you after you've been programming for a year and still feel like a kid in a candy store. Otherwise it will get old fast and the fun and games will end. Try taking some programming courses and see how you like it. Teach yourself some C (or if you're really daring go for assembly language). It's easy to pick up but near impossible to master.

Good luck in your future endeavors and start early to build your portfolio.
