How do you connect to the internet? Type of connection, routers or no, and speed?

It sounds like it might be a firewall problem... Are you able to say which firewall is on the machine?

I'm not particularly knowledgeable on the subject, but the firewall thing sounds like a real option as to what is causing the problem.

Check it out and post back.

If you have XP and the new service pack....it came with a firewall. Got to control panel and then security settings or something to that effect.

Sometimes it says that to me, it'll say:
Negotiating with server*
Retrying to connect to server (1)
Retrying to connect to server (2)
Retrying to connect to server (3)

*this message appears longer than usual

Heyyo,

Probably a firewall issue. I'm gonna guess sp2's on there, so go:

Start > Control Pannel > Firewall > *now try and figure out how to disable it, then once done halopc, just enable it again*

What a firewall does is monitor the information that comes and goes through your computer. Most ports it shuts off any chance of other computers using those ports to gather information from you, or limits the speed of it so it can scan all the information first for any 'suspicious activities' (hacking, worms, trojans, etc). They're annoying for gaming, but very usefull most of the time. The best free one IMO is Sygate Personal Firewall. Fully customizable (tell it which ip adresses to block, to allow full unrestricted acess, which ports to open, and how long in time or days for each rule to be in place, and other cool stuff), and works fine for me, so M$ Win XP firewall can kiss my ass. ;)

The ports to open are 2302 and 2303.
