well, obviously, you need a proccessor, RAM, a motherbord, and powersuply. you'll also need things like a hard drive, cd-rom drive (or a CD/DVD-RW), 3.5 in floppy drive, but you can just take thoes from you old comp.(your current specks look good, so keping these would be a good idea) now, when you say 'sound system' i think you mean the speakers, so you'll want to eaither keep your old sound card, or if it's integrated to your motherbord, a new card would be nice.

The only thing I could see is updating the sound and video cards, other than that I don't see why you would want to build a new one.

Heyyo,

Wow, your comp pwns mine already, and you're looking for an upgrade? lol, must be rich I take it? ;)

Ok, if you want top of the line, get a new mobo, like the kind with PCI-Express (PCI-X) slots in them, and then pick yourself up a beefy Nvidia 6600GT, or if you want higher, get a ATI x850 Series vidcard, or an Nvidia 6800Ultra. I for one suggest for price and preformance the 6600GT, and then the ATI x800 XT PE. There's a new ATI vidcard that should come out within 1 or 2 months that's supposed to be cheaper and better than the Nvidia 6800 series, so you could always wait for that. Any of those vidcard I mentioned would rock so hard on halo, full graphics and It still wouldn't lag down to less than 20F/S I bet. :)

This seems like a nice mobo: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=13712&vpn=BOXD 915GAV&manufacture=Intel If not that then just check other intel mobos, I'm sure you'll find a good one. Make sure it has at least 1 PCI-X that's either x1 or x16 slot so you can throw inna nice vidcard too. :)

YES!!! The AMD 64 is faster than the 3.2 GHz. I've checked tom's hardware and the benchmarks. It performs 5% above the p4. AMD's are better for gaming.

How much does a mother board cost and how much does it cost to install one? It seems like buying a new mother board would be expensive and I would definitely not want to try to install it myself...

Heyyo,

Hmm, if I were you, I'd keep the cpu, and get a new vidcard instead. That's still a beefy cpu, at the most you'd lose 15F/S over the new cpu, but with a better vidcard like a Nvidia 6600GT you gain like 30F/S right there. ;)

Here's an example from tomshardware..

Scores on Far Cry (AGP):
Radeon 9600 PRO: 22.4 F/S
Radeon 9800 PRO: 40.2 F/S
Nvidia 6600GT: 60.2F/S BOOM!

As you can see, a newer videocard is what gaming's all aboot eh? :)

That's the message I've been trying to get out to us gamers, the most important part of our computer is the videocard, then cpu, then mobo, then ram.

Or, if you still wanna trade in your cpu, that's cool, but the ram? just keep the 1 stick, and just get another stick of 512MB of ram. The difference in speeds of ram is like, 0.5ms, which ain't life-threatening. I tried using just 1 stick of each of my ram before, and I'm very technical, but the difference in speeds of ram between PC2700 and PC3200? That's just on paper, I couldn't feel the diff myself.. So even if your ram's PC2100, I doupt you'll feel it either. But check the ram slot on that mobo, might not be compatible with the current ram you have, if so? get new sticks of ram. The standard for today's gaming is like 1GB. Most new games like Far Cry, UT2k4, is sometimes unbearable with less than 1GB of ram cause it'll try loading stuff like explosions during the fight...

Get the AGP 8X version. They make x series in both PCI and AGP. By the way the x700 does not need a seperate power connector. It drays its power from the slot...amazing.

Your case has an ATX form factor...ie most all mobos will fit since most are ATX.
