Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

I've just gone through 'Environment Design in HALO 3' by Mike Zak and actually I think it was a pretty cool and interesting presentation. It's also very image heavy so you shouldn't find it too boring.

In particular, I found the information and thought-process for paths, fronts, AI blinds, layers and cover very thought-provoking and hopefully any amateur environment designers can put some of that into practise. I also just wanted to quickly mention how interesting the whiteboard idea is. It really looks like a cool way to think about areas, colours and textures. I definitely recommend that everyone else takes a look at this presentation if you haven't already done so.

I really didn't mean this thread to be a critical review. I’m just intrigued to see what you guys thought about this and any other presentations you've gone through and what, if anything, you got out of them.

Oh and i'd love to see the concept pieces for Halo 3 in the project page. The pieces shown in the environment design presentation were mind blowing.

It seems as if there is audio for people with Office 2007, but when converted to .ppt from .pptx the audio is lost.

All the audio was in .aif format....embedded audio maybe?

BlueBaron123, just DL the ones from the link I gave above

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

I just noticed the file size on some of these beasts. Maybe I spoke too soon and there is audio embedded.

Time to actually download and open one I guess.

No audio (as far as I've seen). The mass is caused by the fact that some of them contain over 100 slides, many of which contain images.

Edit:
Oh... there is audio? Well don't I feel a bit dumb. Um... so would there be any way for someone to get that audio up where the rest of us can hear it?

There's a .pptx viewer for windows available here. You might need to re-name the file once it's downloaded to have a .pptx file extension and then open it in the viewer (my computer saved them as .ppt which this viewer won't run).

(see Aku's edit). I hope someone can make the audio avilable in a format more of our computers will read.

It may be audio files linked to someones computer at bungie...

"C:\Documents and Settings\Frankie\My Documents\Workstuff\pr0n\sound\prs_plr.aif"

I just checked..the .pptx files contain no audio...
But if you want the any images from the slides, change the file extension to .zip and extract the images.

:D

We are going to probably change the files to be zip archives containing both the original PPTX and a PDF file, along with an additional resources they need (I think two of them are missing movie files).

There is no audio or transcript of the presentations - this first batch are all GDC slides, meaning if you weren't there to hear the talks, you'll probably lack some context. In the future, we may be able to add some additional notes/transcripts for future presentations, but slides is likely all for this batch.

However, if you want to hear the presentation, the GDC sells audio transcripts for presentations on www.gdconf.com - you could download the slides, then listen along.

I'm honestly loving these .ppts ^_^ The technical presentation on Matchmaking was pure orgasm for me. <3 graphs.

Can't wait to read the one written by The Gooch (my hero, btw).

Thank you, Bungie =]

EDIT: I'm also having a problem opening the files too. The only one that worked with the matchmaking one. I'm using Office '07

OK, about the file problem. I tried changing the extension to ".pptx", and Offiice linked me to a Compatabilty Pack download of some sort. So I'm gonna try DLing that, and I'll report if it'll fix the problem. 'Cause I already have Office '07, I see no reason to download another Office viewer =P

EDIT: OK, bingo. If you're having any problems with opening one of the .ppt files, just change the extension to ".pptx", and try opening it. Office will prompt you with a compatability pack. Download. Install. Change all other files that have problems opening, and there yah go =]

Most people were having problems opening the .pptx files, they then converted them INTO .ppt files so whey would work.

Office 1997 - XP Use .ppt (Converted files Here)

Office 2007 use .pptx (default pub file from B.net)

Character Artist -- Electronic Arts

Very cool stuff.
some of those Concepts are amazing.

And the Lightmaps look sweet without the textures.

  • 02.26.2008 12:51 PM PDT

PKF: Yup, that helps, too =]

I'm digesting The Gooch's technical article, and I'm just getting giddy from all the technical nitty-gritty. That man is my (angry) hero. I love him so much.

Lightmaps is next <3

Nice! I'm going to have to take a look at the art section when I get the time.

Everything will be gone long before me. When the first living thing was born, I was here, waiting. When the last living thing dies, my job is finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave.

I'm definatly going to look at the art one sometime today. I can't wait!

I really liked the environmental design slides. It was interesting to see the pre - E3 concept art. Thumbs up for making them available!

  • 02.26.2008 1:51 PM PDT

Wow, these technical articles are amazing! I just read The Farm one - I really liked that one =]

For some reason, I have the sudden urge to pull out one of our old server machine(s), and just tinker with them >_<

They are "pptx" files - IE has a bug that is cutting off the last letter on download. If you get a ppt file that doesn't work, rename it to be pptx.
