don't go wireless. i tried it because i wasn't liking the idea of using a 50 foot ethernet cable, but it lagged like a mother -blam!-. You'll hate playing if you go wireless.

I agree that hard wiring your x-box is better than using wireless....yet, i set up the wireless connections for three different people and had problems all three times. If the modem is wireless than you won't need a router as long as the computer is hard wired. If they are both wireless the gameplay will definitely be slower. If the modem doesn't transmit a wireless signal than you need to get a router. Your best bet is to go with a wireless-G router and the x-box model wireless adapter. I've used both a Linksys ($130) and Belkin ($80) router and found that they both work well with the x-box adapter ($130). I did have difficulties with both routers trying to use the Linksys game adapter ($90).

Thanks for the help guys. Once again, its not me going wireless, its a friend. I use cables to connect, that is why I had no clue on how to do wireless or how much lag it would create.

I use microsoft wireless gaming adapter and it works flawlessly with my linksys wireless router. I get no lag what so ever outside of the usual. I would recomend going wireless as a good alternative to wires as long as the router is close by to the xbox, dont try using it through five walls then it will lag.

I have a friend that has his computer upstairs and xbox downstairs and wants to have a wireless connection between them. My question is, do you still need a hub/switch/router to be the central point, or can you have a wireless transmitter off of the modem, and just have two recievers, one on the comp. and one on the xbox?

I have a router off my cable mod. then a 50 foot cord and then a switch and another 10 foot cord and i do not lag at all. make sure u get good cables if u are going to have long long wires. my friend has wireless and he is ready to stop playing. he only has to go down one flight and the router is right on top of him so it is not a problem of LOS ( line of sight for ur non tec people) but cables all the way and do not get the cheap ones spend the extra 10 bucks for a better cord and save urself the lag.

Another option would be to get the Linksys Wireless Gaming Adaptor. While it allows you to connect to a wireless network like any other wireless NIC does, it also allows you to easily "connect" two XBoxes together by simply changing to the same channel on the adaptor.

A friend of mine and I both have the adaptors, and mine works great on my home's wireless network. We have yet to try the direct channel link for gaming yet. We suspect it will be quite cool, as he will be able to be upstairs in my house on my 27" TV while I'm downstairs on my bigscreen HDTV. ;-)

I use the Microsoft Gaming Adapter (MN-740) along with my Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G). I have never had any problems as far as lag or connection problems. The distance from my router to my xbox is about 20ft through 4 walls.

It's really hard to tell you how wireless will work without testing it. My suggestion is to get someone with a laptop and wireless router to come over and test it out for you to see how strong of a signal you can get.
