I was wondering this last night, and it's weird they had a little article on it.. But I don't remember reading what I wanted to ask.

When can we set our own buttons for things? I could think of awesome set ups along the lines of boxer to where I'm hitting the left bumper to throw nades, and clicking in crouch to jump.

Or would custom button layouts make the game unbearably impossible?

Or is it impossible to program something like that...?

I've seen it in many other games, you just kind of hit the button that you want to preform the action.

After all buttons are hit, there ya' go, a new control layout that you can memorize and perfect because it is yours.

That would just be great; can someone tell me if this is even possible? Or fair? (Wouldn't know why..)

It IS as bad as you think and they ARE out to get you.

The latest update has some about it. There are a few other schemes, but there is no customization other than that. But you would have to be careful, because some actions have to be on certain buttons (fire, zoom, etc...)

Hi I'm RT and I like to argue!

They actually mentioned, in one line (possibly in parentheses), why we can't have custom configs.

Were there any other control schemes that ended up on the cutting room floor?

JG: Oh yeah. The difficulty with making control schemes is that different buttons have physically different features. You can’t put the Primary Trigger on a button, for instance, because it doesn’t have the analog range necessary to make the Plasma Pistol work. You can’t put the camera controls on the d-pad because it doesn’t have a click function for zoom. That means we can’t just let people completely customize their controls, so we try to anticipate all the different options people might want. What if someone is a dedicated sniper and they want zoom on a trigger? What if they want to crouch a lot and need it on the d-pad? What if they do nothing but jumping tricks and they want Jump to replace the Primary Trigger? In the end most of these control schemes don’t offer enough of an improvement to be worth the effort.

Now can someone tell me why the PP needs analog range?

Always thought that the plasma pistol was either you mashed the button or held it down, it enver has anything to do with the analog sticks..

Not the sticks, but the triggers--they're analog, too, which is more noticeable in a racing game where they're the accelerator and brake. What I don't understand is why that's necessary for the PP.

I assume it's because the PP charges at different rates depending on how far you depress the trigger, though I'm not sure if that's the case or not.
