The reason why the Spartan II's were implemented because Project "Orion" was sucessful, so makes you wonder, if there was Spartan I's were are they? I have just been wondering this...

I have a feeling that Sergeant Johnson was a spartan I. I say that because he is stronger than the average marine and can give out one hell of a beating. I think Mendez (the guy who trains the spartans) was also from the spartan I project.

I saw re-reading The Flood and I was like WTF, did I miss something? I think the originals were trained just like the spartans, but never had the "changes", like you all mentioned. Is the UNSC keeping a secret?

I say Sergeant Johnson was a spartan because HE JUST WON'T DIE. No matter how many times he dies, he just keeps coming back. He's back in Halo 2 after miraculously surviving the explosion of Halo....

I'll be on my own side.

Yeah you guys, havent you read the books? When the spartans first start training on Reach, Deja tells them stories of the first spartans and their battles and what not. And its like back in greece a long time ago

That's not necessarily true, about Spartan-I's being the Spartans of Ancient Greece. They never specifically said this (I Believe), and only refer to those Spartans as a reference point for the reason they were created and why their project is called what it is. Spartan I's I honestly believe were a project prior to Spartan-IIs. I like the theory that Mendez could have been one, I also want to theorize that Mobuto, the hardcore marine that made it far into the Library (in the book The Flood), was a Spartan I. I'm not sure about Sgt. Johnson, but it's possible, I wouldn't rule it out.

No, read the book, actually here is the exact line - "In order to deal with increasing civil turmoil the Colonial Military Adminstration had secretly launched "Project ORION" back in 2491." "The purpose of the program was to devolop super-soldiers, code-named "Spartans", who would receive special training and physical augmentation." "The initial effort was succesful and in 2517 a new group of Spartans, the II-series, had selected as the next generation of SUper-Soldiers. Page-16 The Flood. See, told ya there was Spartan I's

Actually, in Fall of Reach, they say that there were Spartan I's a few years (well quite awhile before) the Spartan II's but hardly anyone knew about them because it was top secret, and the only reason other people know about the Spartan II's is because they thought that having people know about them (and their victories) would help boost the human morale for the Covenant War. So, the Spartans of ancient Greece arent the Spartan I's (UNSC project).

Why dont you try reading them again. I just looked at the books and it confirms what we just said. Although the Spartans were named after the Spartans of Greece, so your right to a point

Uhm, Ghostman, from your own quote. If the "initial effort" of Project Orion was successful wouldn't the Spartans be the first series? Why would anyone name their first attempt the "second series" unless... they were giving homage to the first set of Spartans back in ancient Greece?

No, no , no listen to this sentence. The initial effort was succesful (the initial effort was in 2491) thenin 2517 a new group was made, the II series.

If that's true, it becomes even MORE likely that people like Mendez and Sgt. Johnson are in fact Spartan-I's. I'm absolutely convinced for some reason that Mobuto HAD to be a Spartan-I. I mean, yea, marines are under-rated, but to get THAT far in the Library without dying means you had to be uber hardcore marine extraordinaire....Or maybe just a Spartan-I.
Thoughts on Mobuto?

the project is called Spartan ll because the orginal spartans were the ones they learned about in the book FALL OF REACH there are no other spartans like the master chief we've all come to know and love before his time

The Project *began* in 2491. Then there's research, development, then you have to raise the bloody kids for fifteen odd years to create your Spartan Super Soldiers. The dates sounds about right.

You can't just whip up super soldiers over night, there's bionic implants to design and test, then there was the genetic experiments. That alone is going to take many many years. About 10 years of development say plus about 15 years of genetic augmentation on your five year old children abducted into the program sounds about right to get the Soldiers out by 2517.
