No, read the book, actually here is the exact line - "In order to deal with increasing civil turmoil the Colonial Military Adminstration had secretly launched "Project ORION" back in 2491." "The purpose of the program was to devolop super-soldiers, code-named "Spartans", who would receive special training and physical augmentation." "The initial effort was succesful and in 2517 a new group of Spartans, the II-series, had selected as the next generation of SUper-Soldiers. Page-16 The Flood. See, told ya there was Spartan I's

Just in case everybody missed this.

The Project *began* in 2491. Then there's research, development, then you have to raise the bloody kids for fifteen odd years to create your Spartan Super Soldiers. The dates sounds about right.

You can't just whip up super soldiers over night, there's bionic implants to design and test, then there was the genetic experiments. That alone is going to take many many years. About 10 years of development say plus about 15 years of genetic augmentation on your five year old children abducted into the program sounds about right to get the Soldiers out by 2517.

Draerden, There's a difference between the Spartan I's and the Spartans of Ancient Greece. I thought though that the Spartan I project was a failure, so they made another project for Spartan II's.

*grins* Well, at least that's a reply and not a slap-in-the-face quote that only repeats itself.

I thought my logic was sound. It takes years just to make a new type of drug, let alone managing full genetic manipulation. Look at my time frame and you'll find it fits perfectly.

If the project began in when it did.. there just isn't time for two generations. John-117 and his buddies spent more then a decade being developed. What was he, six when they began work on him?

The Spartan i's are those of ancient Greece. Giving them the Spartan II title was sort of an honor to those long since gone soldiers.

As for getting the soldiers out by 2517. Wrong. They were done with training and augmentation in 2525. They were taken at the age of 6 in 2517. The Spartan II's were 14 when training was finished, but they looked much older due to alterations.

I did read it all. The Orion project began working on the Spartans and the *initial* effort was successful. Thus there was only one attempt made at making the Super Soldiers- The Spartan II's.

Perhaps if you'd care to make a point, present some other interpretation of the above?

U need to learn your History. Spartans was a army
They took young kids and trained them for years untill they were 20 or 30. there army was so strong and well trained that a army of 300 Spartans could Kill a army of 1000 but all of the 500 or so were killed in a big battle

These Guys were amazing in strenth and brains. like in the big battle they fought the battle in a gorge were they could direct the attack in one spot.
these were Spartan I

You guys really aren't understanding what I am saying huh? In 2491 they took young kids, and trained them for years, then they tried it a SECOND time in 2517 which was John,Kelly,Sam and so on. That's what meant.

That disagrees with your quotation. You said the initial program was successful. Why did they have to try a second time if they succeeded the first time?

Mybe because the the people were too old or dead for the augmentations.

Ten years or less of life to an augmented soldier? That sounds like a failure to me but then... they said the program was successful. Go figure.

That's not necessarily true, about Spartan-I's being the Spartans of Ancient Greece. They never specifically said this (I Believe), and only refer to those Spartans as a reference point for the reason they were created and why their project is called what it is. Spartan I's I honestly believe were a project prior to Spartan-IIs. I like the theory that Mendez could have been one, I also want to theorize that Mobuto, the hardcore marine that made it far into the Library (in the book The Flood), was a Spartan I. I'm not sure about Sgt. Johnson, but it's possible, I wouldn't rule it out.

Yes, there is quite a bit of information which obivously says they are Ancient Greeks, the Spartan Is. It's in the Manual, it's in the Sparant Desc in HBO, and has been mentioned quite a bit in the books, there is no theory, there is no alternative, that is what it is.

Why did they try again? This time they had MJOLNIR, and the augmentation ready and almost above the 75% survival level. It states in Fall Of reach that they had a tolerable level of success with the augmentation.

the ancient Spartans were"trained' as warriors when they were like 9. they had to survive on their own in groups and when they were 12 or so they would go through trials to see if they were good enough to live as a Spartan. the only way this didnt happened is if they died during the trials which happened alot

I swear, some people can't read.

Here is the Quotation (AGAIN)

"In order to deal with increasing civil turmoil the Colonial Military Adminstration had secretly launched "Project ORION" back in 2491." "The purpose of the program was to devolop super-soldiers, code-named "Spartans", who would receive special training and physical augmentation." "The initial effort was succesful and in 2517 a new group of Spartans, the II-series, had selected as the next generation of Super-Soldiers.

Okay, so I outlined the KEY parts

1) Project ORION was secretly launched in 2491
2) The Initial Effort (aka the Spartan-I's) were sucessful
3) In 2517 a NEW group of Spartans, the II-series were to be the NEXT generation of super soldiers

There you go, in plain sight. Spartan I-series were the first generation of super soldiers, my guess is, these were NOT taken as children, instead were taken from the current ranks of the military, and trained even more extensively, but no augmentations were done until the Spartan II project. The reason we may not have heard of them, is because...

The Spartan II project was also hidden to the public, the ONLY reason they released the information, was because the UNSC needed a major moral boost. The Spartan-I's were around in times of peace, so why be exposed if they don't have to?

Chances are, people like Mendoza, Sarge, and that other guy in the flood novel, are NOT Spartan-I's. By 2552, chances are most of the original spartans had aged and no longer fit as combat personnel. (If taken while in military training - 18 to 30), they would be at least 70 years old.

Also, it was said that super soldiers could not be designed overnight, true, but from 2491 to 2517 is 26 years, the original Spartan I-series soldiers, could have been trained for a few years, but like it says 'initial' efforts were sucessful, maybe they all died when they tried to do augmentations to them, therefor, wiping out the entire Spartan I unit from existence.

So there most likely WAS another group of Spartans BEFORE the Spartan IIs, and not including the ones in Greece.

Cheers,
~Kain
