Whilst the fairly new report button serves an important purpose, it would only generate more help with the ability to add text to a reported post.

Giving a brief outline of what's wrong with a post (if it isn't apparent) would, I'm sure, speed up the Moderating process.

But isin't it the mods job to figure that out? I may think something is wrong with a post, but it might only be wrong IMO. What people find wrong with posts I think would be too subjective. I don't have a set of rules telling me what a bad post is, or what spam is, so I report threads that I think don't belong on the forums. There have been some that kind of violate a rule, but kind of don't. Sometimes they get locked sometimes they don't. How the report system works, and how the mods work is a mystery, for good reason. They may have a clear set of rules and guidelines, they may have to just use their best judgement, I don't know. Just because I think it shouldn't be there doesn't mean I'm right. If it is one that I think might violate some rule or guideline I usually send a PM to a mod instead of using the button.

It's not necessary, and would only serve to slow down both the user and the moderator. If the post is against the rules, we'll know what to do with it. If it needs explaining for any reason, then it's probably best not to report it.

I agree entirely, leave the moderators to decide what the thread has done wrong after you have reported it.

Good to see you back ash ;-)

What would be the consequences of hitting report by accident on a harmless post?

It asks you if you are sure you want to report it. So that should be second chance enough. Achronos did mention abuse of the report button could earn you a ban.

Ash55, glad to see you back. Now, I choose you Ash55. *Throws pokeball* Attack the Halo3 forums.

I reported someone's post because he'd repeated the same text in roughly 5 separate threads. Since I was reporting a single sentence which may not be obviously rule-breaking, then it might be perceived as me abusing the system.

Unless you checked every reported post that I sent, you may not see what I was getting at.

If it's really necessary, you can always send a private message to a moderator explaning the situation.

Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

That's actually a very good point, and I've been wondering about that myself. There are some things that are obviously against the rules, but only to someone who has all the information. So I'm not really sure what would be the best thing to do in that situation.

That's fair enough but even so, you probably won't get penalised for using it. I won't say why though, it's a secret. =] I would recommend the classic "PM a mod" method if someone is spamming in a not-so-obvious way.

Taxes do nothing to affect the share of wealth, since taxes are only applied to income.

So that's not even a part of the conversation at all, so it's pointless talking about it....

"for a "best" moral to exist, there must exist the "best" moral base. If the base of morality varies from location to location, culture to culture...then there can't be an absolute moral..

i think that this is a terrible idea that will not help things, but will harm the moderating process.

let's suppose that when we report a post it gets put on a list that is brought to the mods' attention. they then read the reported posts and make a decision as to whether it is appropriate. by following your idea, the exact same thing will happen, and in addition to having to read the suspect post, they will have to also read our thoughts about the suspect post.

mods are given the responsibility of determining if a post is inappropriate, and the report button allows us to bring potentially inappropriate posts directly to their attention. since they make decisions based on their thoughts about the posts that they read, i see no reason to make them read even more.
