*Quotes Achronos and Yoozel a bunch of times because I think it will make them like me more*

I think people just need to accept the fact that the forums aren't the same anymore and either stop going into them, or just stop crying about it and do what is in their power to try and fix it. Making this same thread 200 times isn't going to fix anything.

I'm a serious dude, so what?

These forums are bipolar... mods do something, everyone freaks out we're power hungry... when we don't do anything or do things quietly we don't do enough. Psh...

Ever see that Futurama episode where Bender plays God? I think the lesson was that in order to maintain order and control properly, the people shouldn't even know you've done anything at all. Going overboard and locking down tons of threads all at once draws too much attention. Not locking down violating threads encourages violation and again draws attention.

I'm going to speak directly to the moderators when I say this: When you guys get a report message, you need to use your nice tabbed browsing and deal with it immediately. Even if it is a violation on a fast moving forum like the Halo 3 Forum and it'll be "gone" in a few seconds, it still needs to be dealt with. Being a Mod is a hassle, but it comes with respect for a reason.

For all you forum users, myself included: Get on the ball with the report button! If a stupid person posts a dumb thread, read it and report it. Don't glide over it and ignore it. If it has a bunch of dumb spam replies to it, report all of them too. Be diligent and you'll reap the rewards. Use your best judgment, because just as Achronos said, it's up to us to spot ALL the stuff. The mods can't surf every forum constantly like we can.

there is a lot we must do to make this place our beautiful black retreat again.

My Message Policy

Brrayday, that was very well put. I agree that sometimes the moderaters need to be discreet but there are those times where their presence is needed and people need to see them working. Plus I always love watching yoozel begin is Ride of The Valkyries charge. They key is finding that balance of working in the shadows and attacking the threads in force.

AS for using the report button, it has to be one of the greatest additions to B.net around. If people would just report and move on, so many useless threads would have 0 replies. This would eventually discourage anyone from posting another useless thread. And thats all I have to say about that.

You sir are a hypocrite. I'd love it if somebody cleaned out this (yet another complaint thread about problems).
Granted this thread may be hypocritical in its very nature, but that in no way means I am a hypocrite. In fact such a statement is obvious to the point that it need not be mentioned.

You know, a better use of your time than creating these kinds of threads is to use the report button. The mods cannot see everything... but you guys do, collectively.

If you actually care about improving the signal in the forums, how about you actually use the tools you're given instead of blaming the moderators for spam and things that aren't spam but you think shouldn't be there anyway.
Sorry if you feel I am blaming the mods for the excessive spam, I hope I am clear in starting I do not blame you guys. This is not about individual threads, this is about the excessive amounts of similar and unnecessary threads. Granted I, or anyone else, can make use of the report feature, and I fully understand you guys cant do everything. I'm simply stating that a few more simple ground rules might help with the mentioned problems. Make an example out of someone who post threads made everyday and perhaps the amount of those threads will decrease.

I have to say this.

The report button does not work.

I reported it about 40 times and nothing.

Umm.. Why would the mods want single users to be able to flag a thread on their own? I personally don't want griefers to single-handedly report every thread in a forum. If I were a member, I would assume the report feature is limited to one report per user (with adverse effects on those who try to report a single post multiple times).

Now I don't exactly know how Achronos programmed it (or do I??), but it doesn't take a genius to work out that much.

It does work; it just doesn't work how you'd like it to (it's actually better).

When a post gets reported by 5 people it goes to the "Hey check out these threads" - list, then the mods are free to do what they want to with it. Right?

Taxes do nothing to affect the share of wealth, since taxes are only applied to income.

So that's not even a part of the conversation at all, so it's pointless talking about it....

"for a "best" moral to exist, there must exist the "best" moral base. If the base of morality varies from location to location, culture to culture...then there can't be an absolute moral..

this means very little since i am not privy to how the system works, but it does not appear to work as i would expect.

when i see a thread that is clearly a duplicate, i report it. i then suspect that some mod will see the report (and possible many additional reports from other users), examine the thread and notice that it is a duplicate (some time this is patent since there are frequently 2 threads on the same topic on the same page of optimatch), and then lock the thread.

but, this is not what i see happen more often than not. it seems that duplicate threads rarely get locked.

i also notice that some members frequently make posts that clearly violate the rules. for example, let's suppose that legendary member X makes many posts that attack the playing skill of other players and makes various rude remarks. when i stumble upon these, i report them, and i notice that this member has made many inappropriate posts along these lines. since i suspect that mods are looking at these posts, i expect that something will be done, and i realize that a warning could take place. then, a few days later, i see another attack against another user. i report it, and since i suspect that a warning has already been issued for the very same offense, i suspect to see this member's posts deleted as a result of a ban. but, this does not seem to happen, and the next thing you know, i see that same member attacking another member without interruption.

i realize that i am ignorant of what happens to reported posts, but, from my perspective, it seems that many offenders receive no punishment, and it seems that the rules are applied inconsistently. i suppose that i will continue to report inappropriate posts and look to see if repeat offenders actually get banned. just today i have seen and reported a number of posts that break the rules, in one case, a member made multiple personal attacks against another user in the same thread. heck, there is even a rude posts in this thread. i am eager to see if any of those posts get deleted as a result of a ban, or if any member titles are removed as a result of a warning.

what if you guys made more halo 3 sub forums... maybe to organize the posted more... maybe a sub forum to campaign, for matchmaking, for custom games, for clans/groups.... something like that.... it wouldn't be a perfect fix, but it'd solve some of the problems what with the over crowding and such.....

The Bungie.net forums are fine the way there are. Yes there is a lot of repeat threads, yes there is a lot of dumb people posting dumb things but this is something bungie or the moderating have no control over. Yes in an ideal world (forum) there would be measures to stop such things and people wouldn't be so dumb. Yes a world like that from Minority Report where we could ban users BEFORE they ask for recon would be nice but all that can be done is control the outbreaks before they become to big.

It would be nice if all the "bad" threads could be locked as soon as the first post was made but the fact is bungie doesn't have the man power to do such a thing. This is just like real life, we don't have police officers on every corner, they can only respond within a certain time. Sometimes things are dealt with quicker than others but in all honesty its just the luck of the draw that someone who could do something about it was near by.

Moderating the forums is only half the battle, if people would just READ the rules before posting or search the forums before making a repeat topic, a lot of this "garbage" would not exist. Bungie has not control over the minds of its forum users (not yet anyways) just like local police have no control over the minds of the citizens. Crime (real and forum) will always happen. All we can hope for is that it is dealt with accordingly and in a timely fashion.

If you think that bungie needs to be handing out more bans or locking more threads, thing to yourself, how many times have you made a thread or a post that would be locked or ban worthy under your new criteria. Bungie knows what they are doing, they have been doing it for a long time and have been doing it quite well.

If people don't like the way things are being run, they are welcome to go create their own Group forum where they can moderate or they can go create their own site and do whatever they want. Be great full for what you have and that it comes to you so easily (and for free)

Because that'd be a bigger hangov...headache to deal with. I propose listing 7 main topics and forcing all discussion into those same threads while ruthlessly blacklisting every violation!

Some times it feels as i already have.

The last hour I have only been locking, banning and taking care of rule violators. Believe me, the report tool does work. It's just.. I wish there was an end to the reports. It currently is like trying to stop the waves from hitting the beach with a spoon.

I'd like to make a proposal; all of us mods will go ultra zealous (that's like way more than overzealous);

You are all of you vermin! Cowering in the underground, thinking, what, I wonder?
That you can escape your blacklist? No, your account will burn until it's surface is but glass!
And not even your alt will live to creep - blackened - fromt it's hole, to mar the reflection of Bungie.net, the culmination of our community.
For your blacklist is the will of Achronos. And I? I am his instrument!

i have done just that. i got a warning today from a mod. a number of people in a thread made personal attacks against me, and in one post i pointed out how foolish some of these claims were. in the warning i was told not to share my thoughts about other posters.

looking at that same thread, a couple of members used inappropriate words, and a few made posts that were entirely off-topic and only involved personal attacks. looking at the contents of the thread, it seems odd to me that my post was punished while other posts with serious and flagrant rules violations are still present.

heck, a bungie employee even made an off-topic post that shared his feelings about two users in that thread. i realize that folks at bungie can make any rules that they would like, and that they are free to break any of their own rules if they choose to do so, but it is rather strange how the rules are enforced.

when i get punished for making comments about posts made by another user and then scroll down to see a bungie employee making comments about other users, i have a difficult time understanding that the rules are being enforced consistently.

All I can say is that it's called work for a reason. Namely, because it's not fun (or easy).

I think you mods need to work on your delegation of responsibility. If you want me too, I could write up some official suggestions and give them to you. I think with an efficient breakdown of responsibility you could actually become more effective without wrecking your eyes and fingers.

Of course, if the mods don't have defined hours that they "work" on the forums, then all the planning in the world can't make this beast run smoothly.

*coughsalarycough*

p.s. bungie swag should penetrate into the forums. sell that stuff! make that money!

Is this thread going anywhere? My personal conclusion is that the mods are doing the best they can but cant be on 24/7. Theyre mostly overlapping eachothers shifts but it doesnt seem to be enough. I know that the mod force will be added two new mods shortly but question is if it isnt time to look over how active some of the existing mods are.

It feels like only half of our current mods are on as often as one should be able to demand from someone who has accepted the task. Yoozel, Pezza, Evilcam and Recon are the ones Im noticing on a daily basis, perhaps some of the others are on as often too but just arent posting. Then there seems to be a click that only signs in once per month, hell with some I´d guess even more rarely. My suggestion would be to get rid of the latter and replace them with more active members or just fill up the quota of active mods again and let the inactive ones mod too the few times they are on.

I agree, and that's the irony of these kinds of threads. Because if you polled the community as to what's more annoying, seeing random spam in threads or 20 of these threads per week that accomplish nothing...........I betcha the large majority of people would choose these kinds of threads as way more annoying.

Me included.
