Hello all,

I hardly ever use the forums, so I sincerely apologise if I am posting in the wrong place, or if feature requests aren't allowed or whatever - it seems like the rules here change every day, I can't work out how Achronos keeps up!

Anyway, my question is a feature request, and the feature that I am requesting involves groups. I think groups are great. Quite a lot of things that a clan site needs are in there - forums, articles, news, member permissions etcetera. However, I am surprised that with the recent Bungie redesign, there wasn't more of an update to the features of groups.

The biggest feature I would like to see is the ability to upload a custom homepage image to groups. Surely there are far less groups than there are users, and storing the amount of JPEG files required would not be a serious problem. At least with a custom header image, the clan/group can have a bit more of an identity for themselves. Before we made the group for The Corporation, I made loads of different art for the clan which we can't use - such a shame!

I would be happy to discuss this idea further - I would be greatly interested to hear some figures about how many groups there actually are, and what amount of storage this would need. Just so you know, my next choice feature request would be draggable homepage elements to make your own layout - but I think that this JPEG idea would be much simpler to implement.

Thanks,

I'm sorry, I don't understand - could you perhaps explain this feature?

You can make a theme. Then you send it to Stosh. (Some think he's the problem for 9/11) If he approves, he makes it into a theme on bungie.net. And then you can use it.

Firstly,

Are you smarter than a 5th grader? No. You lose.

I don't think that's particularly helpful. It doesn't say anything about this in Bungie.net help, and it's not a feature through the site, you have to PM an admin - you surely can't have expected me to know? I even said I don't use the forums much.

----------
Anyway, I'm not sure about this - he probably wouldn't approve it, it would be branded for my clan so no-one else on Bnet would want to use it. It would probably be seen as a waste of effort. Can anyone shed light on whether the theme would have to be available to everyone or not?

Thanks,

Yeah, it would be available to everyone. For more info on themes, you might want to read stosh's uber-sweet theme-making convention.

I don't know that that feature would work very well. It would be pretty easy to abuse: people could upload inappropriate things and use them as their header images or whatever, and that would just ruin it for everyone. An 'approval system' whereby the bungie.net staff sift through the submissions to reject the inappropriate ones might just consume a lot of time unnecessarily -- that kind of system has been suggested for image signatures and everyone having their own custom avatar, as well.

I like the idea, but unfortunately there are jerks out there who would mess it up it for us all.

Demerzel,

I found that article myself just after I posted!

I understand your point about inappropriate activities being carried out with the feature. It's such a shame that such horrible people try to ruin Bungie.net for everyone.

Consider this as a compromise, however: only groups outside the probation period may have a custom theme, and the administrator uploading the files must be at least a heroic member. Surely, this way, Bungie could cut out register-an-account-then-super-quickly-upload-t3h-pr0nz style spam completely?

What do you think?

That sounds like an okay idea. I don't think that Bungie could cut that kind of behavior out completely because some people with trust titles still tend to make a few questionable decisions. Maybe if it were at least Legendary -- by that time, you'd think that they would be trustworthy enough to have a custom theme.

My thing is that abuse of a feature like that can't really be prevented; it might be kept to a bare minimum, but it could still be there. Plus, I kind of like the idea of submitting themes that everyone can use -- in that way, you're contributing something to the community as a whole, rather than just one group.

I think that if this system ever gets implemented, that it should definitely take your trust rating into account somehow -- that seems like a good idea to me. However, I don't know that I'm fully in support of the idea of such a feature.
