Subject: Locked for bumping

Posted by: ash55
I've locked hundreds and hundreds of threads in the files forum for bumping. Whenever I visit there I usually end up locking about 80% of the front page.

However, about 500 content threads (if I were to make a nice guesstimation) are made per day across all forums so you can see why the odds are shifted slightly in favour of the rulebreakers.

People do get banned for it though, and the fear of god is in a lot of the rest. It's usually just the ignorant users who are too lazy to read the stickies who do it (aka the majority).

but I personally have NEVER seen a thread locked for excessive bumping

That may be because they take about 2 minutes to sink after they're locked.

ok, that's fair enough

thanks for the answers everybody!

and stop talkin about hair! :P

Well... personally I play favorites. If the person in question has black hair. I ban them. If they have brown, I give them a 5/5 rating and add their name to the Recon Armour list.
I'm taking notes.
For Pezz's sake, make sure the notes are in brown.

Also all I can say to bumping threads is just keep reporting and hope for the best. The problem is threads move so fast by locking some the thread just gets bumped back to the top of the forum.

They should just make the soul auto-ban bumpers.

Taxes do nothing to affect the share of wealth, since taxes are only applied to income.

So that's not even a part of the conversation at all, so it's pointless talking about it....

"for a "best" moral to exist, there must exist the "best" moral base. If the base of morality varies from location to location, culture to culture...then there can't be an absolute moral..

i have no idea how many times a given post needs to be reported for it to appear on a list for the mods to review. i do not expect the mods to punish a member merely because i report something, but i do expect them to punish a member when it is clear to all that he has broken the forum rules.

today i just found a legendary member who has recently broken 4 forum rules. he made an explicit personal attack (i believe he claimed that a user was riding someone's private parts), and he mocked a person's opinions based on his supposedly low playing skills and these are clearly rules violations. he has also violated two unwritten rules that i have been personally warned/punished for, he made two consecutive posts, and he made a post that contains his thoughts about a particular bnet member (and this post was also spam as it was entirely off topic).

i have just hit the report button for all 4 rules-breaking posts, and i am eager to see what, if anything will happen. if a mod were to look at these 4 instances of breaking different rules, and if the rules are to be enforced consistently, then it seems that we should all expect to see this person warned and banned (that is how it has worked with me and many others). if this were to take place, then we would all be able to see the report feature's effects since his member titles would drop (and his posts may be temporary deleted as a result of the ban).

i wonder what will happen.

Seriously dude, what are you smoking? I am sorry I had to say it that way, but um, moderators don't come running as soon as one person presses the report button, and/or one person feels like rules have been violated. I am rather sure you need a certain number (hopefully over 10) before a moderator is notified. Basically, other people didn't share your views about so called "personal attacks". Also I highly doubt there is an preference for "Mythic Members". Seriously, I don't know where you got that idea, but I am betting Bungie holds them to "GREATER" standards, because they have been here for a while. Except here that is. Maybe you saw a "personal attack" in the community forums?

It's too easy to become an Heroic/Legendary Member.

They take almost everyone and if you look in the forums you can see what happens if you give a keyboard and a flashy title to almost everyone. These members are not trustworthy.

I agree, I remember back when the titles came out, they were really hard to get (Heroic was pretty hard, but Legendary and Mythic were very hard to achieve).

One, Foman submitted his avatar, and now he was given the role and powers of Forum Ninja.

Second, to link, you must do this: Copy and paste the webpage here

To get a named hyperlink, do this: I Can Haz Link?

Hope to have helped. I believe there is a guide on this, so if I find it, I will link it.

Also, this is off-topic. You should have searched the thread on this.

Anyways, bumps do get locked. I sometimes visit the Files Forums, and I will notice a few locked bumped topics.

Yet, some are not, but you can't find all of them.

Wait. I have brown hair!

I'm taking notes too then.

tl;dr lololol

We deal with what we get. We don't always get everything. Also, each of us has a distinct moderating style. Someone might deal with older members harder because they should know better, and some deal with them with a little leniency because they have earned some respect in the forums.

It really comes down to the personal mood of the moderator at the time.

Just report and move on. That's all you can do. If a mod gets around to it, whoopey! If not, that's ok.

sesquipadelian, I have it on good authority that Mythic Members do get banned, and do lose their titles.

I know a few Mythics who were busted down to, um...

Edit: Down to "Heroic", for a 3-day ban. [;

"for a "best" moral to exist, there must exist the "best" moral base. If the base of morality varies from location to location, culture to culture...then there can't be an absolute moral..

there are a couple of interesting things that you have mentioned. most notably, that you state that some mods may enforce rules inconsistently. that is what i expected, and i think that is too bad. i can't speak for anyone else, but when i see a legendary member make half of a dozen inappropriate posts (calling other members stupid, mocking them for their skill level, calling even more members stupid), i see it as many clear violations of the rules, and i expect such users to be expected to follow the rules to the same degree that we all are. and, when i personally get banned or warned in some of the same threads, the different treatment from the mods stands out further in my mind. call me crazy, but when i get banned or warned when i respond to posters who break rules, yet i see the same poster call people a laundry list of rude names without being banned, the different treatment of different users seems a bit unfair.

also, since personal attacks against other users involve such flagrant rules violations, i can't wrap my head around how the mood of the mods is material, nor can i see how that poster's title or lifelong posting history seem relevant. if a poster breaks rules repeatedly, i think that it would be appropriate for that person to be warned, and if he continues to break the same rules, then i think that it would be appropriate for that person to be banned.

but, this is not my main concern. my main concern does not involve how bnet members receive punishment, but how infrequently inappropriate threads get locked. in optimatch, EVERY DAY the same kinds of duplicate threads get created and mess up the first few pages of the forum. no matter what member title the op has, it seems appropriate to me that these obvious duplicate threads get locked in a timely fashion. and, i think that this would benefit everyone. it would benefit forum readers since the dup threads will nor remain active by being posted in, it would benefit members since they will learn the rules and have an incentive not to create dup threads, and it would help the mods since the rule about dup threads being against the rules will be made abundantly clear.

Those with blonde hair are simply processed into Soylent green...
Wait! Soylent green is made out of people? That explains why the taste varies from person to person.

As for the main topic: I heard something about bumping, locking, and banning. Maybe there was something in there about unequal punishment. That's a concept I'm having a hard time following; mostly because I follow the rules.
