This isn't 100% necessary, as a beefy portfolio is the best thing you could have. But you could always attend a game school.
There are better vectors than this.Yes, such as IRC channels ;-)
A few years of prior experience doing graphic design helps too. Jerk. =P
My point is that "game schools" are often more trouble than they're worth. And the bottom line is the name of your school doesn't matter if you don't have the experience for the job.In all honesty, that's a great point, and hopefully people realize both that:
1) Just because you went to the "right" school does not guarantee you a job -- building up your abilities and experiences is more important; and
2) Do not feel like your dreams are crushed if you cannot afford or cannot get into the "right" school -- abilities and experience are, once again, more important.
This lesson can actually apply to all kinds of jobs, so hopefully people can take something away from your example even if working for a game developer is not their goal.
It's also important to note that the game industry is one where it's actually fairly easy to get the experience you need to get the job. Plenty of PC games (including Halo 1 and 2, among others) have SDKs available for users to build custom content. It's the perfect way to develop the skills needed to get a job in the industry.
