This may help, I hope. I don't know too much on the subject myself, so that is all I can really provide. Hope it helps.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Here's another really good article about having an attractive resume and portfolio. Good luck to you eventually man! Hope you live the dream :-)

Woah, I read the title wrong (If you know what I mean).
>.> <.<

Do what Foman said.
Edit: And what Slayer said.
You should take some computer apps. classes so you can get a feel for the system if you haven't done so already.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

This isn't 100% necessary, as a beefy portfolio is the best thing you could have. But you could always attend a game school. The only one I can think off the top of my head is Digipen in Washington state. If I remember the portal gun was a Digipen senor project and Valve offered to hire them on the spot.

There are better vectors than this.

I was kind of hoping to start my career at bungie like Tarzan did with the jungle apes or like Mowgli did with the wolves. One day I would just show up, crying and innocent, they would raise me as one of their own. Teach me in the ways of a game developer and one day I would meet girl and in my dev.kid.internet-y style ways of speaking i would say "A/S/L?" She would take me back to the real world were people get a thing called "money" to work, instead of being chained to a desk all day forced to fix YAJJB/F and eat nothing but pizza pops and ding dongs.

OR you could do what Luke did, that seems way easier. Just lounge and things will come to you.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

Hence why I said it isn't necessary. I had an ex-Bungie guy for a teacher once. He said that he's hired people before who haven't attended Digipen and people who did. He said it's the safe way to go pretty much, but that there are other ways like joining a mod community.

This was like 2 years ago so my memory might be sketchy. But yes, I'm very well aware of the fact that game design college isn't the only way to go.

A few years of prior experience doing graphic design helps too. Jerk. =P

My point is that "game schools" are often more trouble than they're worth. And the bottom line is the name of your school doesn't matter if you don't have the experience for the job.

Frank O'Connor is a 12-year veteran of the videogame magazine industry and has therefore never worked an honest day in his life.

Yep, in fact if i recall right Bungie doesn't care much for the school guys, they like people with experience and people who can show off their talents with a side project or something.

I heard they feel sorry for Pegboys and hire them on sight.

In all honesty, that's a great point, and hopefully people realize both that:

1) Just because you went to the "right" school does not guarantee you a job -- building up your abilities and experiences is more important; and

2) Do not feel like your dreams are crushed if you cannot afford or cannot get into the "right" school -- abilities and experience are, once again, more important.

This lesson can actually apply to all kinds of jobs, so hopefully people can take something away from your example even if working for a game developer is not their goal.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

The whole point of college is to build your skills and help you get experience. So they can help.

Again I'm not saying they're necessary. I was just mentioning an option. You can very much learn all this stuff on your own.

No, If that were true I'd have a job already...

I believe it was EL who nominated me for the Pegboy job about two years ago.

Yeah, here it is.

It's also important to note that the game industry is one where it's actually fairly easy to get the experience you need to get the job. Plenty of PC games (including Halo 1 and 2, among others) have SDKs available for users to build custom content. It's the perfect way to develop the skills needed to get a job in the industry.
